@emmdithy that’s not what that old song is about exactly. The miner was a broke gold miner panning in the river, who lived with his daughter in a cave. The singer was the girl’s lover. She had homemade sandals that caused her to trip and fall in the water. The lover watched her drown, claiming he couldn’t swim. You were right that it’s macabre.
