That is stupid, you dont know NOTHING about NIN or Trent. The song already had it's TRUE meaning, cause Trent wrote it, with his feelings. Johnny gave it ANOTHER meaning.

Can you elaborate on how Cash gave it meaning? The lyrics are the same. He just covered it with a sound that is more pleasing to the general population.

The original song conveyed a lot of meaning to people like me who were struck by their first bout of depression in adolescence and turned towards the darker thoughts that Trent Reznor captures so well, particularly in The Downward Spiral.

Sounds like it gives meaning to another crowd as more of the American can probably relate to Johnny Cash better than they can relate to Trent.

So how exactly does it give more meaning to others anyhow? Really am just curious? Was a very cool cover, but I'm still more a fan of the original as it gives more meaning to me.
@mike571765 I first heard NIN's version, and only later did I hear Johnny Cash's cover. I think Cash's version has "meaning" to more because more people are aware of his personal issues, and the song strongly follows his personal life. The manner in which it is sung also resonates more with the general populace.

I don't it makes it any better or worse, just appeals to different tastes and people relate more to a particular tone, tempo etc.

NIN wrote the song, but Cash gave it meaning.

I agree with Drannon. Also DassJennir it is not nothing it is anything. I listened to both of the versions but I do like Cash's better.
