i interpreted different than all of you
i though the whole bomb shelter thing was a metaphor
I kind of pictured it as like maybe he and someone else he loved dearly got in a fight and he missed them and he didnt want to fight, so he stayed inside his "bomb shelter" to only think about them. And he just misses her so he pretends she is with him (the part about pretending the echoes beloning to someone he used to know) And he wanted to go talk to her again and have a constant relationship but everyone is telling him no and that the conditions outside of his "bomb shelter" are bad and everything bottled up might explode beucase they just couldnt take it and that wouldnt pretty.
