This song is about comparing suicide with martyrdom. The verse "Wake up, grab a brush and put on on a little make up" and so on is talking about the hidden stories in the bible and hiding the bad things they never told about christ in the bible. Then "here you go create another fable" another religious story. The chorus is saying the fact that Jesus could be looked at from a viewpoint of suicide. Then the thrid verse "father, into your hands, I commend my spirit" and "father, into your hands, why have you forsaken me" are two of seven last words of christ.
The direct definition of "chop suey" is a dish filled with a mix of all the leftovers (meaning the leftovers of stories in the bible never heard)
I couldnt agree more, but what interests me is the line "Why'd you leave the keys upon the table?"

According to your theory, does this mean the facts that were hidden can easely be unlocked? If that is the thruth, why is Jesus not agreeing with this by asking WHY?

As I understood, Jesus is angry in this song at God, his father, for hiding all the parts of the story.

I do strongly agree with most of this, however, in an interview, SOAD said that the original title of the song was suicide, but that didnt work well with the label...its possible that they picked some random name...

Extremus, to be more specific "Allah Allah lamma sabcthani" (probably mis-spelled) among the last words of Christ. Translated from the original Hebrew "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" This was not an angry sort of statement, he was actually asking.

To help further explain the song, my thought "self righteous suicide"... because Jesus "sacrificed" himself on the cross for peoples' "sins" people around the world "praise" him. Thus his dying (if he is/was God) would be for self righteous reasons.

I agree with this, could "You wanted to" be people wanting to hide the bad in the bible?
Also I agree with Extremus'es idea about keys.
I don't think it could be about the domestic abuse because the thrid verse "father, into your hands, I commend my spirit" and "father, into your hands, why have you forsaken me" are as JofaGuht said are two of seven last words of christ.

You have the best reasoning in your description (in my opinion), and a great view on the song meaning. I agree with you. Theres something I dont get about SOAD though, they are Armenian Christians. (Like most armenians). But they often question the picture of God thats painted by the bible. I would be interested to learn more about their personal views, as I know they believe in God and Christ. Maybe they are Catholic. (But I highly doubt that)....... I would lean more towards them just questioning the picture of God through the bible.

christianpunk20: I agree with you completely. Now, I don't think that SOAD is christian for the way they perform, and their style of music. However, this does not mean I don't like their music, I think they're an amazing band, just not christian.

SOAD does not seem Christian, they seem to be new age (or cosmic humanists). They seem to believe everyone is one and all religions are pieces to their believed one true religion. A huge part of cosmic humanism is that everyone is god or holy and in the end of this world everyone will be united into one god. Since they might believe all religions are pieces to one true religion, an explanation of them sounding as if they are Christian to some is because they believe in some Christian values (like murdering is wrong) but do not hold true...

Also, on the Toxicity cd booklet Daron Malakian thanks "God, Buddha, Allah and Lucifer because they are all so lovely..." and Serj thank "The Great Spirit for vision..." The song seems to be saying that Christ's sacrifice was self righteous rather than a selfless act for the people he loves as the Bible describes. I like Extremus' idea about the keys. It's like they are saying the pieces to the truth are there, but all one needs to do is pick up the keys and unlock the truth. And I like JofaGuht's idea about the makeup, but it could be used to cover up the other religions rather than hidden stories from the Bible. Also, look at the song Aerials. I seems very New Age ("Life is a waterfall, we're one in the river and one again after the fall." It seems to be saying everyone was once One and will be One again after these lives on earth or something). I do not agree with SOAD's beliefs if I am correct in this analysis, but this could be what the song is talking about.
I love SOAD and all, but neither Daron nor Serj are Christians (dunno bout Odadjian or Dolomayan for sure, though I'd think Dolmayan would be). But I'd like to take a moment and say that not once was Christ angry at God in his entire life, as he led a sinless existence to free humanity from sin. Being angry at God WOULD, after all, constitute a sin. Also, Christ actually WAS God in a literal sense, so he would not ask WHY God would hide a truth from him. On the cross, he was actually despairing over the fact that...

The question "Why have you forsaken me" does not have the connotation that people are describing at this site. All in all, it's a song about how Serj, a neo-transcendentalist, does not fully understand anything that the ancient and correct text of our Holy Bible says, and he is making a political statement about a great portion of the world's beliefs. Take this from a practicing minister.
Very accurate interpretation. I seen an interview where they asked Serj Tankian and Daron Malakian what other jobs they could see themselves in if it wasn't for rock band. Daron answered that he might have been a preacher. He also said he really gets into religion and philosophy. So why do angels deserve to die? It has to do with Christ and the crucifixion and his last words, because it was written that he would have 12 legions of angels at his command Matthew 26:53 Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall presently give...

He cried because they didn't do their job and Christ was beaten and hung on the cross as the angels stood and watched.

To ne, Agnosticisim is nothing but laziness. Either pick a side, or get off the fence because the fence is getting torn down real soon!
i think that "leaving the keys on the table" refers to Jesus' rebirth, like he left the key to the "door" on the table, and that when he was reborn, he hid all of his scars, and he did all of this because he wanted to. then when it says "here u go create another fable" its talking about how his rebirth almost started his life anew, another fable, a story if you will.

Since I think you've all got some really plausible ideas, I'm just gonna throw in a conjecture for what the keys might represent. Biblically speaking, Christ took "the keys of hell and death" from Satan during the three days prior to his resurrection. I'm not sure what the table might represent, but I think there's a good chance that those are the keys being referred to. Maybe it means that Jesus feels manipulated and used, and that his death means nothing because the prize he died to get isn't even being put to use, just "left upon the table"...

I think the keys thing probably has to do with the fact that there were some things Christ left for others to answer before he died, hence the keys. The keys would belong to anyone who wanted to simply take them off of the table, and the fact that it's plural means there is more than one person that will use these keys. Using these keys would be giving access to have people distort the story by interpretation. Any questions Christ left unanswered, some people answered themselves by taking the keys and opening the door to Christianity, the religion that...

Any questions Christ left unanswered, some people answered themselves by taking the keys and opening the door to Christianity, the religion that worships Christ. I am not saying at all that Christianity is fake and stupid, not at all, but I'm saying it's possible people have distorted the story a bit over time. Indeed, the fact that this is a possibility is very hard to think about because so many people have been believing the distorted story, if the story was distorted. Can you imagine if you have been believing the opposite of what you thought you believed in? This is why it is such an issue to those who think about it.
@JofaGuht The bible isn't a fable, and Jesus didn't have a baby lol, sorry that's just a conspiracy and this meaning i obviously and argument or suicide by reading, but when Jesus says why have you forsaken me, he must not only suffer the death of flesh but spirit as well and the feeling of being completely shut out by God... Sorry i stick with facts. So many people comment on the bible without reading or realize everything said has came true, They listen or grow up in a world of youtube or think they have stumpled onto...

Good day sir.
When he asks why have you forsaken me he doesn't literally mean forgot him or no longer had his back. God was pissed at them for killing his son and u know what God did to man when he was pissed b4 he sent Jesus to die for our sins. Which is why Jesus says god forgive them for they know not what they do. When he says why have u forsaken Me it's because God had always spoken to him and filled him with the holly spirit to do his works but when he was being killed god got both angry and sad. The sky turned black. He didn't wish to watch his son die cause it angered him and caused him grieve. However Jesus felt it when he took away his presence and he was asking where did you go? Jesus was usually filled with the holy spirit not now so it was given back to his father's hands. Now in the song it seems like Jesus is saying where are you when I need u most was any of it real or is this basically suicide. And why should I have to cry when angels -like Satan -Deserve to die
@JofaGuht The song was originally going to be called Suicide, but they changed the name at the last minute because reasons. They chose the name Chop Suey because Suey is the first syllable in Suicide.

@JofaGuht Its about the Crucifixion. Christ said If I wanted to I could bring down a whole army of Angels. By allowing himself to be Crucified the band is saying it could be seen considered self righteous. Father into your hands...was a quote on Jesus saying why does he have to die when the Angels that fell were permitted to live? They are playing with the Question of if Jesus knew he was going to die and why then why did he accuse God of Forsaking him? All Christians get hung up on that line. I thought the song was...

Extremus, to be more specific "Allah Allah lamma sabcthani" (probably mis-spelled) among the last words of Christ. Translated from the original Hebrew "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" This was not an angry sort of statement, he was actually asking.

I would lean more towards them just questioning the picture of God through the bible.

the combination of all the replies are right. the facts CAN be easily unlocked, but jesus is covering up how easy it is (make up).

Maybe it means that Jesus feels manipulated and used, and that his death means nothing because the prize he died to get isn't even being put to use, just "left upon the table" by his father.

When he says why have u forsaken Me it's because God had always spoken to him and filled him with the holly spirit to do his works but when he was being killed god got...

I thought the song was very obvious but then again I know Scripture.
