Although not intended this song is about West Point.
Every morning we step out to formation where we contrast gray against gray.
Angels have seen the transitions of the Honor Code, the scandals, the crumbling differences between wrong and right. The Honor Codes means nothing on crumbling stone, but takes full meaning when inscribed on our hearts.
We walk through ourselves and back again when we parade and walk tours, but in between the rain.
As we live and work in our rooms we hear many things through our doors. Everyone here cries out about wanting to die at one point.
Here we always stand up straight
Something really radiates from WP
On R-Day we all came here with a suitcase in our hands
And as New Cadets and Plebes we walk fine lines trying not to get hazed, and balance cadet life.
On R-Day we all removed our civilian clothing and replaced them with uniforms.
In Beast many people turn to God for support.
We all spaz out sometime.
Just like our names carved out on our name tags, we are all here to try to carve our name out. The names of many Grads are carved out in stone around here.
We all talk like lions, like warriors, but in battle we sacrifice like lambs.
98% Lose their G/F while at WP
Children better run when they hear the thunder of war, out of the nightmare's of war.
We will get flashbacks of combat, but its all in our head.
Again, WP drags everyone down at some point and we think of bailing out, as we look up the buildings that look like a fortress.
Round here she is always on our minds,
We have 46 months worth of time
We are never sent to bed early
No one makes us wait
And the night before we stay up very very very late.
TATERBLUE: if you think that "some of us think too much" then maybe you shouldn't be on a website where the point of it is to ANALYZE the lyrics... just saying.

SOURCE_4: i think the way you relate to this song amazing.
that's the beauty of music, isn't it?- somehow these simple words have been put together in a perfect way so that they mean something different, yet significant, to everyone who reads them.

It wasn't spouted as a fact. And the fact that he stated that his relation to the song was not intended by Counting Crows, proves that. Source 4 simply wrote the lines, and how they relate.

I love your interpretation of these lyrics. I think that's what music is and should be about, each person taking something different from one song, Counting Crows are great at providing a canvas to do just that cos their songs are so subtle and, to an extent, ambiguous. I look at these lyrics in one way and someone else does another way, and sharing those ideas is brilliant cos it helps to broaden the ideas of others who only think in their own mindset

Wow. I know that this was posted years ago and that your account is probably inactive, but I'm going to post a comment anyway. I'm so glad someone made an interpretation similar to mine. I'm not in the military but my father is a United States Marines. When I heard this song I immediately thought of bootcamp and the military. It also reminded me of my childhood, growing up as a military kid. You're interpretation is beautiful. It's almost exactly the same as mine except that for me this could also apply to military kids growing up on military bases....

The first line reminds me of that. When it's just me and moon and sometimes the rain. That's when I think about my life and try to figure things out. I see that crumbling difference between right and wrong. I just don't know anymore. The military contradicts everything. I don't believe in killing but I know that we have to.I don't want my friends to graduate and go to war. Here we often cry at night while our fathers our away. We come and go. All of the moving is very difficult and confusing. We have dreams like Maria and sometimes we get into trouble. We have sex because we're lonely and misunderstood and losing faith and we want to find love in someone else. We can't sleep and sometimes we get so tired of life. We can't see the war our fathers are fighting but it's still there. We see the helicopters flying over head and we hear the artillery and see the flares at night when the Marines are training. It radiates. We know that one day that will be us. We talk big like lions, about becoming like our dads, but then we go to war and sacrifice like lambs... some of us right out of high school. We want to make a name for ourselves. We want to be war heroes. Those boy, so many boys that are like brothers to me have grown up and left, they're always on my mind.

Intended or not, it has nothing to do with that. You can have your own interpretation, but don't spout it as fact.

@source_4 Outstanding take on it. It\'s not that for me but amazing how it all makes sense how you explained it. Incredible.
