This song was about the death of Buddy Holly in a plane crash. He died in february, hence the shivering with the delivery of 'bad news on the doorstep'. The joker is supposed to be Bob Dylan I think, and the King is Elvis Priestly. (at least I think that, but i could just be being obvious). I think the woman who turns away is supposed to be Janis Joplin, not sure about that though. The song is basically about how music 'died' on the day that buddy holly was killed, and since then everything else can't compare.
Great interpretation! I always interpreted the "Fire is the devil's only friend" line as referring, possibly, to Jimi Hendrix(As he had a song named "Fire"). Also I wondered if the girl who "Sang the blues" was Carly Simon, and the fact that she "Smiled and turned away," showed how commercialized the music industry had become, where the blues went from music by the sufferers to being a capitalistic genre of profit. Just my thoughts, but really, great job!

The woman who sang the blues (and could give him no happy news) was Joni Mitchell. She had an album at the time called Blue. She used the same piano chording technique that is going on in the music during that lyric. In one song on her album, she goes to read the news, and it all is bad (it is all about people being killed in the Vietnam war).

It might also be the death of Richie Valens, who died on the same plane. He had 4 top hits in 8 months, an undefeated record.

Actually the song is saying that Buddy Holly was the original King of Rock, and Elvis is the Joker who stole his crown.

Father, Son, and the Holy Ghost = Big Bopper, Richie Valens, Buddy Holly. This is an alternate interpretation I heard from a friend of mine.
