This is just survival!
Can't promise your children everything,
but you won't lie so they can sleep tonight.
Defeat tasted nothing like you said.
22 days left till the end of the world.
My legacy was making you a man for a justice i could not change
this one voice not to forget,
"Fight every fight like you can win.
An iron-fisted champion,
an iron-willed fuck up."
Can anybody tell me why God won't speak to me,
Why Jesus never called on me to part the fucking seas?
Why death is easier than living:
you can be almost anything
when you're on your fucking knees.
not today
not my son, not my family
not while walking is still honest and you haven't given up on me
...Dear Shithead,
this isn't happening
The sky is really falling.
The paint's all made of lead.
There's asbestos in the walls.
Hell's coming to rip off the doors to your priveliged heaven.
Do you want to love and feel it?
You can look but you can't taste it.
You can reach but you'll never have it.
We are untouchable, untouchable is something to be.
Can anybody tell me why God won't speak to me,
Why Jesus never called on me to part the fucking seas?
Why death is easier than living:
you can be almost anything
when you're on your fucking knees.
not today
not my son, not my family
not while walking is still honest and you haven't given up on me.
"I wrote the song right after moving out of my Mom's. I was realizing that a lot of things
she had warned me about in life where in fact true."
-Tom Gabel.
Proof is in this thread:

To me the lines
"can anybody tell me why God won't speak to me
Why Jesus never called on me to part the fucking seas"
Is more about a lack of clear answers or purpose in life than it is about questioning gods existence.
"Why death is easier than living"
Is about the hardships of life, particularly in regards to poverty but the next line
"You can be almost anything when you're on your fucking knees"
refers to the freedom that comes from having nothing to loose,
"Not today, not my son, not my family, not while walking is still honest."
is about not selling out your ethics, or your beliefs, to advance your station in life.Tom is saying there is nothing dishonest about walking, but if you've made money through amoral means then all your success is precipeced on a lie. Essentially the song is saying there is more dignity in being poor and honest than wealth can buy. In the final verse when Tom sings about Lead Paint, Asbestos in the Walls and hell he is reffering to the situations that poor people live in because governments and corporates allowed such things to happen. The wealthy view the lack of material as hell, the song asks the rich
"do you want to love and feel it, you can look but you can never taste/ You can reach but you will never
Says that no matter how hard those who have traded away there integrity try they can never get back what they gave up. The last line is saying that in spite of the negative judgements passed down, from those who society may deem more succesful being untouchable is something to be proud of and is something that cna't just be brought.
Maybe a disagreement about whether or not the asbestos walls and lead paint are literal references to anything rather that just a metaphor for something solid and safe (a house) getting stripped away by weakness.
I view these lyrics as a daydream,an imagination of a realization of being wrong about God at the end of the world. At the end of the world he realizes that his walking is futile, this is just survival. He tells his mom he understands why she taught him the way she did lamenting that he'd been taught to work hard be persistent and have strong will and to keep walking and working hard. Great things and as long as walking is still honest he decided long ago he's gonna keep doing things like he's been taught and walk that way. It seems to me like the mother and son are having a great understanding conversation towards the beginning especially the parts where there are multiple singers.
And then he asks the questions that looking back on he knows the answers. Answer #1 cause I didn't listen, Answer #2 cause I didn't ask, Answer #3 cause I made life hard on myelf walking surviving all day towards no point, toiling for no purpose when it would have been so easy if I'd just got on my fucking knees, but I didn't and I reiterate my solid reasons why.
Then he laments on his his anger towards God as the world was ending. All of a sudden when shit hits the fan he can blame and express anger towards this shithead and his heaven and hell which didn't exist in his mind when their was praise to be given, only when blame to be placed. And then he imagines being left on earth as it becomes hell while looking was heaven is just out of grasp.
And concluding his daydream, he decides that being on the other side, untouchable, that may be something to explore in another daydream.
Just because it says "God" and "Jesus" doesn't mean that's what the whole song is about, no matter how hard you try to bend the meaning to fit your own personal preferences.
This song is about life going down hill/being in a desperate situation, but still having the integrity to not give in and sell out.
can i get an amen?
Beatles- Crass- Tom Gabel
Penny Rimbaud was influenced mainly by john lennon. and gabel wouldnt have picked up a guitar and started playing those early anarchist songs if it wasnt for his Crass phase. even though i dont like the beatles sound, saying they suck is just really ignorant.
