    Lyric Correction:Dear mother,
    This is just survival!
    Can't promise your children everything,
but you won't lie so they can sleep tonight.
Defeat tasted nothing like you said.
22 days left till the end of the world.

My legacy was making you a man for a justice i could not change
this one voice not to forget,
"Fight every fight like you can win.
    An iron-fisted champion,
    an iron-willed fuck up."

Can anybody tell me why God won't speak to me,
Why Jesus never called on me to part the fucking seas?
Why death is easier than living:
    you can be almost anything
when you're on your fucking knees.
    not today
not my son, not my family
not while walking is still honest and you haven't given up on me

    ...Dear Shithead,
    this isn't happening
    The sky is really falling.
The paint's all made of lead.
    There's asbestos in the walls.
Hell's coming to rip off the doors to your priveliged heaven.

Do you want to love and feel it?
You can look but you can't taste it.
You can reach but you'll never have it.
We are untouchable, untouchable is something to be.

Can anybody tell me why God won't speak to me,
Why Jesus never called on me to part the fucking seas?
Why death is easier than living:
    you can be almost anything
when you're on your fucking knees.
    not today
not my son, not my family
not while walking is still honest and you haven't given up on me.

Song Meaning:Why didn't you guys do what i did? Just ask Tom what the song is about.....

"I wrote the song right after moving out of my Mom's. I was realizing that a lot of things
she had warned me about in life where in fact true."
    -Tom Gabel.

General Comment:I never read the aetheist thing personally, although especially within respect to the last verse I can see the argument. I always read it as describing the dignity of leading an honest life, at the expense of wealth.
    To me the lines
"can anybody tell me why God won't speak to me
Why Jesus never called on me to part the fucking seas"
Is more about a lack of clear answers or purpose in life than it is about questioning gods existence.
"Why death is easier than living"
Is about the hardships of life, particularly in regards to poverty but the next line
"You can be almost anything when you're on your fucking knees"
refers to the freedom that comes from having nothing to loose,
"Not today, not my son, not my family, not while walking is still honest."
is about not selling out your ethics, or your beliefs, to advance your station in life.Tom is saying there is nothing dishonest about walking, but if you've made money through amoral means then all your success is precipeced on a lie. Essentially the song is saying there is more dignity in being poor and honest than wealth can buy. In the final verse when Tom sings about Lead Paint, Asbestos in the Walls and hell he is reffering to the situations that poor people live in because governments and corporates allowed such things to happen. The wealthy view the lack of material as hell, the song asks the rich
"do you want to love and feel it, you can look but you can never taste/ You can reach but you will never

General Comment:I noticed the song was first on the self titled against me album in 2000 and could easily have been written in December of 99. "22 days left til the end of the world" might be referring to y2k.

General Comment:This song has NOTHING to do with religion. NOTHING!
Just because it says "God" and "Jesus" doesn't mean that's what the whole song is about, no matter how hard you try to bend the meaning to fit your own personal preferences.

This song is about life going down hill/being in a desperate situation, but still having the integrity to not give in and sell out.

General Comment:fuck religion. there it is in two words. everybody needs to worry about the things that matter right here, right now (peace, love, the welfare of EVERY single person in the fucking world). theists need to stop praying that some mythical shit head will correct their mistakes for them.

    can i get an amen?

General Comment:Brog and popsicle have it right. I, like them, am atheist... But I don't deny the possibility of god existing. I just choose not to conform to the ideals of religion. I want to be strong for myself and rely on my own to keep hope. Religion is just an easy way to get hope. as it is tought. pray and god will take you into his protection and make everything alright... Well... Thats easy. sort of a cop out way of doin things. The only hope people need is the hope they can find in themselves... they don't need a deity to have it.

General Comment:i think evilpopsicleguy is spot on. im an atheist, but i think its false to say any chance of any god is completely impossible. all organized religion is a load a shit from my view but an actual god is very unlikely but not impossible. and the family reference i agree with the other people saying its about not raising your kids in some false happiness. my parents were atheists, yet they told me there was a god when i was really young, i think the same thing goes for gabel which is why hes stating hes not gonna do the same to his kids if he has any, but thats just an outside guess. and for the whole "fuck beatles! Against Me are teh bestz" thing, heres the chain of influence:-
    Beatles- Crass- Tom Gabel
Penny Rimbaud was influenced mainly by john lennon. and gabel wouldnt have picked up a guitar and started playing those early anarchist songs if it wasnt for his Crass phase. even though i dont like the beatles sound, saying they suck is just really ignorant.

General Comment:i dont think its about atheism specifically. in fact despite the references to god, heaven, hell, etc i never really got that idea. to me this song is about resilience, even when things look bad you have to roll with it and keep standing strong no matter how hard it may be. and that "untouchable" line always gets me. so powerful.
