Take, take till there's nothing, nothing to turn to.
Nothing when you get through.
Won't you break, scatter pieces of all I've been.
Bowing to all I've been running to.

Where are you?
Where are you?

Did you leave me unbreakable?
Leave me frozen?
I've never felt so cold.
I thought you were silent.
I thought you left me for the wreckage and the waste.
On an empty beach of faith.
Was it true?

I, I got a question, I got a question-Where are you?

Scream, deeper I want to scream.
I want you to hear me, I want you to find me.
I want to believe but all I pray is wrong and all I claim is gone.

I, I got a question, I got a question
Where are you?
Where are you?

My Interpretation:I feel strange even commenting on this song, coming as I do from an atheist/humanist perspective. Then again, I've always been fond of songs and music that deal with matters of faith and personal evaluation, so perhaps that's enough.

I liked this song long before I knew who Jars of Clay were or what their position was. I was beginning to realize my own lack of faith and was starting to feel 'separation anxiety' at the thought of dealing with the world as an adult and a rational human being, rather than as a child to my cosmic sky-daddy.

To me, this song is about moving beyond faith and looking back sadly at what you're leaving behind. It means growing up, and accepting that while we all want there to be someone always looking out for us, in reality, we've only got ourselves and other people to rely on. It's sort of like realizing that Santa Claus isn't real: we still have a fondness for the old feelings, but we no longer base our lives upon fairy tales.

Instead of interpreting this song with the 'God is in the silence' concept, I instead take the final lines literally. 'Where are you? Where are you?' If there is a divine being, surely it could manifest itself in some way that even a rationalist would be forced to objectively accept its existence? Since, despite being beseeched by the singer, who is obviously torn by his own declining faith and growing understanding of reality, God chooses to say nothing, it can only mean that He doesn't exist.

All that being said, it's still a powerful song, and it goes to show that good music can be interpreted in many different ways by different people. :)

General Comment:I heard this song was written about a survivor/family member of a 9/11 victim and how and why there are directing the questions at God...it makes sense if you think of the song in that perspective.

General Comment:Obviously it has been a long time since Themuse97 left his comment, but I just wanted to respond. To him, or anyone else who feels the same way, I totally know how you feel. I think most believers do at one point or another, from many of the great saints of the last 2000 years, to the writers of the Psalms in the Bible. But, as Lucygirl says, God is always there and will not fail. Only He knows why it's sometimes so hard to see or feel His presence, but the truth is that He isn't going away, no matter how we feel. The hard times pass, and light comes back. (Again, the biblical Psalms have many examples of this.) If we stick it out, and especially if we pray for help, we'll get to a place where it doesn't feel like a myth anymore.

I'm not trying to sound preachy, but just to speak out of some of my own experiences, and those of others that I know. I definitely don't have many answers, and I think the genius of this song is that it doesn't try to offer any, but just cries out to God. That's all we can really do in such moments.

Themuse97, I hope and pray that you and your sister are feeling closer to God, and that He will bless you both as you struggle with these issues.

General Comment:Haunting, beautiful song. It really does reflect how so many Christians feel. We want to scream, crying out to God and wondering where he is in our life, when all the while he's standing beside us, silent.

If we could just wake up, we would see he's been there all along, and he'll never fail us. Even at the worst of times, he's still there, keeping us standing upright.

General Comment:notice this song doesn't resolve... maybe there is no resolution to this whole problem.. maybe all the stories in the Bible are myths and God doesn't even care about us.. my sister has been asking the same questions without answer and I have been asking the same question... maybe God isn't involved in our lives.. maybe thats all a myth

General Comment:Where's God? Is it just me, or do we need Him now more than ever? Today, the air is thick with so many issues that are tearing at the heart of our beliefs and God seems so distant. Often enough, we shrug it off, convincing ourselves that there will be an answer someday. How long will we have to wait? But eventually our convictions become too much to ignore, we just feel like shouting, "WHERE ARE YOU?" And why can't we experience him directly like in the time of Moses and David? I feel this is a question that will stay with us as long as we live.

General Comment:To me, this song represents the doubt that many of us face in our christian walks. We may sometimes wonder if God hears us or if he's even there. It's not saying he's givin up faith, but rather just an expression of what he feels. The "I got a question" is cried out to get God's attention; then the "where are you" is the question being stated for God.

General Comment:It's about someone screaming for God's help. "Where are you?"

    Deeper, I wanna scream
I want you to hear me
I want you to find me

It's saying basically, come find me God, i'm right here, why don't you come find me? I need you now come find me. It is like when you run away to a place that you know someone will look, cause you want them to find you and bring you home.
