My love is in league with the freeway
It's passion will rise as the cities fly by
And the tail lights dissolve in the coming of night
And the questions and thousands take flight

My love is miles in awaiting
The eyes that just stare and the glance at the clock
In the secret that burns and the pain that won't stop
And it's fueled with the years

Leading me on (leading me on)
Leading me down the road
Driving me on (driving me on)
Driving me down the road

My love is exceeding and women
Red eyed and fevered with the hum of the miles
Distance and longing and my thoughts do collide
Should I rest for a while and decide

Your love is cradled in knowing
Eyes in the mirror still expecting their prey
Sensing too well when the journey is done
There is no turning back
No
There is no turning back

On the run

My love is in league
With the freeway
Oh with the freeway
And the coming of the night time
My love
My love
Is in league with the freeway

General Comment:how would you "fuel again" a fire? with a "Big Log". a writer as talented as Plant would of course be aware of the double entendre's involved with such a title. btw, Mark Twain and Nietsche, both with repressive households, were famously surmised to have done some of their best work whilst locked in the crapper...

My Opinion:This is one of those types of songs that seems to lend credence to the suggestion that the onset and sheer popularity of music videos subtracted from true musicianship as a mode of expression and an art form.
But for this song I would disagree; even though it does seem to be supported in lyric by beckoning visual imagery. The words seem to both stir and settle the soul in the same breath. The lyric is a revolving dance of confusion and resolution. Whereas the music is what bends the ear and inclines the mind, theres nothing too deep here but neither is it too shallow. Therefore the song runs the gambit of a song made great by its video (artists interpretation) and a song that is just so melodically and rhythmically assembled it simply begs to be elevated to cinematic scale. What to make of it? Frankly it delivers what it does: a musical journeyscape down memory lane straight into the future, and at once a timeless classic.

General Comment:For me it always seemed simple. His next conquest...the millions of women he had and that he could never be true to. Couldn't keep it in his pants and I can't say as I blame him being 'him' and all, lol.

General Comment:Big Log (bad song title in my opinion - reminds me of the crapper, gtruno is hilarious on this thread)
My interpretation is fairly different and 'sounds' alot closer to his enunciation in my opinion. Of course the song is about travel as he says so many of his are in his interviews and it is certainly about Love lost and the longing times amidst but it is also an autobiography of someone who was a Longer for the Otherworldly, a Mystic. As Plant said about Hammer of the Gods book: 'yeah, it would talk about some of our escapades but would it mention for example when Jones and I would go driving around all day looking for a book by Blavatsky? No it wouldn't. So it's kind of a caricature of us.' - paraphrase from an old interview [man why can't you find old interviews anymore..is there some place on the internet?].

My Love is in league with the Free way
it's passion will ride/writhe/rise as the cities flyin by
in the tail lights dissolving in the coming of light
and the questions of vows stake flight
my love is the miles in the waiting
    the Eyes that just stand
and the glance at the clock
and the seeker that burns and the pain that/payment won't stop
    and it's fueled once again:
    leading me on
    leading me down
    driving me on
    driving me down

My love is exceeding of the 'human'
red eyed in fever with the hum of the mind
distance and longing my thoughts do provide
should I rest for awhile in the siddhe/sun/song?

your love is cradled in knowing
eyes in the mirror still expecting They'll come
sensing too well when the journey is done
there is no turning back, no
there is no turning back...on the run/ruin

My Love is in league with a Free Way, with the Free Way...
and the coming of the Night time
My Love, My Love is in league with the Free Way

My Interpretation:Bob Stein has the best interpretation thus far, elegant yet simple. I would like to throw in a line-by-line interpretation for those still wondering...

My love is in league with the freeway
    - His love life tends to be searching for love with few prospects...open and desolate, betraying his desires.

Its passion will ride as the cities fly by
    - The cities are chances for love prospects. His bad luck with love never gives his passion a chance to play...it just goes for the ride.

And the tail-lights dissolve in the coming of night
    - Tail-lights represent love prospects he sees ahead of him he tries to pursue, and the night puts an end to his chance at them...essentially running out of time.

And the questions in thousands take flight
    - Why could he not find love, what is wrong with him, why is his luck so bad, etc...

My love is the miles and the waiting
    - Again his love life tends to be way more searching than loving.

The eyes that just stare, and the glance at the clock
    - The long boring time between loves, and anxiety of running out of time.

And the secret that burns, and the pain that won't stop
    - Thinking about something bad that happened in a relationship, maybe burned by an affair, and the perpetual pain it caused.

    And it's fuelled once again
    - The desire for love is a need that always comes back.

Leading me on - leading me down the road
Driving me on - driving me down the road
    - His desire and need for love is motivating him to keep searching.

My love is exceeding the limit
    - His time of waiting and searching for love goes on beyond normal time frames.

Red-eyed and fevered with the hum of the miles
    - Desparation and frustration of the long time.

Distance and longing - my thoughts do collide
    - His frustration wrestles with his desire.

Should I rest for a while at the side?
    - He wonders if it is worth it, and should take a brake.

Your love is cradled in knowing
    - Others that are lucky in love have security compared to him, which is anxious and unknown.

Eyes in the mirror, still expecting they'll come
    - Watching out the rearview mirror for a relationship left to come back.

Sensing too well when the journey is done
    - Getting the feeling that the relationship is truly over.

There is no turning back - no
There is no turning back - on the run
    - Resolving to keep going and move forward after leaving a love.

My love is in league with the freeway
Oh, with the freeway, and the coming of night-time
My love, my love is in league with the freeway
    - Again his love life betrays him to a long time of searching, while running out of time.

General Comment:I have always loved this song and wondered what it is about, and now I think I know, I will agree with some of the other folks and say it is about being on the road and touring and his passion for that, it the song it says "And the questions in thousands take flight" to me means that when he is performing and he hears the thousands of people cheering, all the questions he asks of himself as to why he loves this lifestyle so much, fades away with the roar of the crowd.

General Comment:This song speaks to the long, dark, desolate stretches between loves. Beyond the bleakness is acceptance, where the resolutness of leaving (on the run, fueled by secrets and hurts and thousands of unanswerable questions) merges with, and is indistinguishable from, the wide, open-ended quest(longing that does not rest) for new love.

I like to think some details call out to people the author has loved in ways only they would recognize.
