At the time just before 'Steve' (what his friends called him) wrote these lyrics, he was 'going with' the subject of the song (I'll call her 'Liz'). At a celebrity party in London, Liz was...

Now that I've lost everything to you,
You say you want to start something new,
And it's breaking my heart you're leaving,
Baby I'm grieving.

But if you want to leave take good care,
Hope you have a lot of nice things to wear,
But then a lot of nice things turn bad out there.

Oh baby baby it's a wild world,
It's hard to get by just upon a smile.
Oh baby baby it's a wild world.

I'll always remember you like a child, girl.
You know I've seen a lot of what the world can do,
And it's breaking my heart in two,
Cause I never want to see you sad girl,
Don't be a bad girl,
But if you want to leave take good care,
Hope you make a lot of nice friends out there,
But just remember there's a lot of bad and beware,
Beware,

Oh baby baby it's a wild world,
It's hard to get by just upon a smile
Oh baby baby it's a wild world,
And I'll always remember you like a child, girl.

Baby I love you, but if you want to leave take good care,
Hope you make a lot of nice friends out there,
But just remember there's a lot of bad,
And beware, beware,

Oh baby baby it's a wild world,
It's hard to get by just upon a smile.
Oh baby baby it's a wild world,
And I'll always remember you like a child, girl.

General Comment:This song is NOT about a father and daughter. Many of you are taking things too literally. This song is most certainly written from the perspective of a guy who has been dumped by (a possibly somewhat younger) girlfriend.

General Comment:I didn't intend to reply to what ALWAYSYOUR4EVER wrote so I re-wrote it here:
    Oops, did it again!

Well I hate to spoil the party, but when he appeared on the "Live at the BBC" television show in 1971 (I just watched tonight) he played several of his hits. After he played Moonshadow and Tuesday's Dead he said:

"I'd like to sing a song now that I wrote I think before I tried to make um...a second comeback and uh... I think uh..., I think I'm basically talking about myself in this one. This is called Wild World".

And then he proceeds to play a great version of a great song. Sorry, it isn't about Patty D'Arbanville. Straight from the cats mouth.

An interesting part of the "Live at the BBC" show was, several time during the show, they would start a song and then he would stop and instruct Alun Davies to re-tune his guitar. And then they would start the song over. I'm sure he was the only one in the building who could hear that Davies guitar was not tuned perfectly. I thought that was interesting.

General Comment:Hate to burst all your bubbles on what this song means but I always kinda knew...so here is the dirt and its about love of a LOVER!

    exerpt:

Stevens developed a relationship with a young American girl, Patti D'Arbanville, and the two were a pair throughout a period of two years or so. During that time, he wrote several songs about her, including the hit song "Wild World."

The song is in the form of the singer's words to his departing lover, inspired by the end of their romance. Stevens later recalled to Mojo: "It was one of those chord sequences that's very common in Spanish music. I turned it around and came up with that theme- which is a recurring theme in my work- which is to do with leaving, the sadness of leaving, and the anticipation of what lies beyond." [1] Released as a single in late 1970, it just missed becoming Stevens' first top ten hit in the U.S., peaking at #11 on the Billboard Pop Singles chart.[2] "Wild World" has been credited as the song that gave Stevens next album, Tea for the Tillerman "enough kick" to get it played on FM radio; and Island Records' Chris Blackwell has been quoted as calling it "the best album we’ve ever released".[3]

General Comment:Yusuf or Cat? I always saw this as a song from a kind of adventurous perve... Let me explain. A lot of people don't know why Cat Stevens became Yusuf Islam... I heard that he was a real horn dog that absolutely could not get enough of the fine, sexy tail that he was almost certainly getting on a extremely regular basis. He was going nuts from it and couldn't control all this girls any more, it was controlling him and he was out of him mind loco. So instead of joining a 12 step program he decided to become a Muslim. This song here, "Wild World", is just a small snatch at what the old Cat had gotten himself up to, in the early days. It's simply about one of his fuck buddies who decided it was time for her to move on and kind of drift away from Cat, because you knew full well that it wasn't serious. So he says, coyly, fine, you wann leave, leave... but just remember that it's a wild world out there, not just here, in our bedroom. Got it, chick? I don't begrudge you your freedom.. I'll just keep you name in my little black book... I have a feeling you'll be ready for a nice booty call sooner, rather than later... (meanwhile I will have porked a few hundred of my other little chickies, some of which are a little naughtier variety than what you are... but fine, okay.) Luv, Cat!

My Interpretation:My take it you will. It’s about a woman that leaves her old man not by his choice and takes the kid with her. The first verse he’s singing to his ex old lady and in the second verse he’s singing to his little girl.

General Comment:Donovan Leitch must have been an influence. There was a "Special" in 77 (ABC I think) on teen pregnancy. They played that song while showing the porn magazine covers "the wrong message sex education."

That and "tonight's the night" by Rod Stewart great sexy songs of the time

Memory:This song will be my father-daughter dance at my wedding. It's always been his song for me, and I think it perfectly describes a father's desire to see his daughter succeed without being naive.
