At the time just before 'Steve' (what his friends called him) wrote these lyrics, he was 'going with' the subject of the song (I'll call her 'Liz'). At a celebrity party in London, Liz was...
Now that I've lost everything to you,
You say you want to start something new,
And it's breaking my heart you're leaving,
Baby I'm grieving.
But if you want to leave take good care,
Hope you have a lot of nice things to wear,
But then a lot of nice things turn bad out there.
Oh baby baby it's a wild world,
It's hard to get by just upon a smile.
Oh baby baby it's a wild world.
I'll always remember you like a child, girl.
You know I've seen a lot of what the world can do,
And it's breaking my heart in two,
Cause I never want to see you sad girl,
Don't be a bad girl,
But if you want to leave take good care,
Hope you make a lot of nice friends out there,
But just remember there's a lot of bad and beware,
Beware,
Oh baby baby it's a wild world,
It's hard to get by just upon a smile
Oh baby baby it's a wild world,
And I'll always remember you like a child, girl.
Baby I love you, but if you want to leave take good care,
Hope you make a lot of nice friends out there,
But just remember there's a lot of bad,
And beware, beware,
Oh baby baby it's a wild world,
It's hard to get by just upon a smile.

Well I hate to spoil the party, but when he appeared on the "Live at the BBC" television show in 1971 (I just watched tonight) he played several of his hits. After he played Moonshadow and Tuesday's Dead he said:
"I'd like to sing a song now that I wrote I think before I tried to make um...a second comeback and uh... I think uh..., I think I'm basically talking about myself in this one. This is called Wild World".
And then he proceeds to play a great version of a great song. Sorry, it isn't about Patty D'Arbanville. Straight from the cats mouth.
An interesting part of the "Live at the BBC" show was, several time during the show, they would start a song and then he would stop and instruct Alun Davies to re-tune his guitar. And then they would start the song over. I'm sure he was the only one in the building who could hear that Davies guitar was not tuned perfectly. I thought that was interesting.

Stevens developed a relationship with a young American girl, Patti D'Arbanville, and the two were a pair throughout a period of two years or so. During that time, he wrote several songs about her, including the hit song "Wild World."
The song is in the form of the singer's words to his departing lover, inspired by the end of their romance. Stevens later recalled to Mojo: "It was one of those chord sequences that's very common in Spanish music. I turned it around and came up with that theme- which is a recurring theme in my work- which is to do with leaving, the sadness of leaving, and the anticipation of what lies beyond." [1] Released as a single in late 1970, it just missed becoming Stevens' first top ten hit in the U.S., peaking at #11 on the Billboard Pop Singles chart.[2] "Wild World" has been credited as the song that gave Stevens next album, Tea for the Tillerman "enough kick" to get it played on FM radio; and Island Records' Chris Blackwell has been quoted as calling it "the best album we’ve ever released".[3]
