I watched the smoke
As it grew darker
And blew up through the roof
I watched the fad
Who sobbed in panic
As the fire grew

I saw Virginia
Get rid of Langley, and its secrets too
I held your hand
And sat there knowing
That we'd make it through

I saw this man
Dispose of hunger
And soap opera too
I saw this field
That grew perfection
Full of things you do

I saw this box
Get rid of heartache
And cure cancer too
When I awoke
I sat there hoping
This is what we'll do

If we can
We will leave our letter and this song, for you
And we'll write, once a day
And float it through the sea, to you
We'll regret, all those things we thought of but didn't ever do

If we can, we will leave our letter and this song, for you
And we'll write, once a day
And float it through the sea, to you
We'll regret, all those things we thought of but didn't ever do
When the sky, seems to clear
Who will then be left, but a few, me and you

General Comment:This song moves me in a really amazing way.

The first verse to me is dark and sad, it really does remind me of the trade centres and all the bad things that went down in America on 9/11. and the last lines about pointing the blame and all that kinda crap that happens when sh!t goes wrong

The Second seems more positive to me. kinda saying that there is always hope for the future and that we can do anything no matter who we are or what situation we are in

and the final verse really reminds me of friendship and that no matter what happens in life even if we regret doing some stuff....

When the sky seems to clear
Who will then be left, but a few
    Me and you

General Comment:I don't so much have time to discuss the rest of the song, but the first thing I thought of today when it popped up in my playlist is about this line:

I watched this box get rid of heartache, and cure cancer too.

and that thought is this: the box is a cd player, or a speaker, or a boom box... or any other box like thing that produces music.
    Think about it =)
Music does wonders in both those situations... some people go as far as to attribute their recovery to music, and how they kept strong by listening to it.

General Comment:To me this song describes what tom is seeing in the world today. And what he hopes to happen.

The only thing that can cure cancer properly is death. The box is a coffin. And heartache is the heartache of the person with cancer, and the family and friends of the people watching that person suffer.

General Comment:Thank you yellowcardprincess, I'm surprised the first mention was on page 2 of the comments. Langley is also where the CIA headquarters is...which was mentioned in an earlier comment.

    the beginning of the song:

    I watched the smoke
    as it grew darker
and blew up through the roof
    I watched the fed
    who sobbed in panic
    as the fire grew
    I saw Virginia
get rid of Langley, and it's secrets too

thats what it sounds like to me. if I'm right, its definitely weird. sounds like somebody would blow the CIA headquarters up. getting rid of the secrets at Langley...hmm, not cool? great song :)

General Comment:hmm.. I think that the first verse is about all the messed up things that Tom and his wife had witnessed over the years on the tv.. like the WTC and the Virginia/Langley thing.

To me, in the second verse, I think its what Tom sees in his dreams. His dreams are messed up because of all the messed up things in the world. So instead of:

    I saw this man
    dispose of hunger
    and soap opera too
    I saw this field
    that grew perfection
    full of things you do
    I saw this box
    get rid of heartache
    and cure cancer too

I think what he is trying to say is that
he saw this man get rid of heartache and cure cancer. Like when a man loves a woman- no heartache and doctors etc cure cancer.

I saw this field- that grew perfection and dispose of hunger too- a field grows beautiful flowers and it can also dispose of hunger if it was a farm.

I saw this box- full of things you'd do and dipose of soap opera too- A box can be full of things and a box can also mean a TV..

"When I awoke, I sat there hoping..." obviously it was a dream.

The part about the letter and a song etc.. is probably about him praying to God to make things right.

"when the sky starts to clear..."- could mean that one day every thing will be okay.
