Garage Sale. Saturday. I need to pay my heart's outstanding bills. A cracked-up compass and a pocket watch, some plastic daffodils, the cutlery and coffee cups I stole from all-night restaurants, a sense of wonder (only slightly used), a year of two to haunt you in the dark, a wage-slave forty-hour work week (weighs a thousand kilograms, so bend you knees) -- comes with a free fake smile for all your dumb demands, the cordless razor that my father bought when I turned 17, a puke-green sofa, the outline to a complicated dream of dignity, and a laugh (too loud and too long). For a place where awkward belongs, or a phone call from far away with a "Hi, how are you today", and a sign that recovery come to broken ones. Or best offer.

Everything beome about money "grage sale" , and he does need to pay his heart outstanding bills, its like he had alot of expectations but well, not all glitter is gold.
later on he is talking about compass and pocketwatch, things you use when you are growing up and evolving, you start to notice the time not to be late for work and stuff. He also talk about plastic daffodills which connects me to the fact he probably moved out of his parents house and needs to decorate his own place, but since later on you find out he is not being payed well... he uses plastic flower who doesn't need to be change.
Even the sense of wonder, is being sold out and described as "only slightly used".
what I am not sure about is "A year or two to haunt you in the dark" who is you?
he is mainly talking about himself in the song hardly refers to other people, like his father.
The father word also takes place in account of the growing up and moving away process, I believe it represent a struggle with parents the cause of the moving away, else he would of used a warmer closer noun to describe his dad...
Sad song indeed touches me alot, It makes me thank every day I have a good family and that I don't have this rush to flea from the house!
I love how he connects usual, material things like razors, cutlery and coffee cups with all his wishes and desires (e.g. the outline to a complicated dream of dignity).
Whenever i hear this song, i have a clear image in my head how John is standing in his garage, offering things from the past to get rid of it and start all over again.
i think its about him trying to move on from the past.
has anyone else noticed how he phrases what his sings? its different to how you'd imagine one would speak it.
and i have to agree with alk3girl & hab204, thats so sweet Frankie.
and, i agree with alk3girl, frankie, that's so sad/cute. but don't steal stuff.
