Now somewhere in the Black Mountain Hills of Dakota
There lived a young boy named Rocky Raccoon,
And one day his woman ran off with another guy,
Hit young Rocky in the eye.
Rocky didn't like that
He said, "I'm gonna get that boy".
So one day he walked into town
Booked himself a room in the local saloon.

Rocky Raccoon checked into his room,
Only to find Gideon's Bible.
Rocky had come, equipped with a gun,
To shoot off the legs of his rival.
His rival it seems, had broken his dreams,
By stealing the girl of his fancy.
Her name was Magill, and she called herself Lil,
But everyone knew her as Nancy.
Now she and her man, who called himself Dan,
Were in the next room at the hoe down.
Rocky burst in, and grinning a grin,
He said, "Danny boy, this is a showdown".
But Daniel was hot, he drew first and shot,
And Rocky collapsed in the corner.

Now the doctor came in, stinking of gin,
And proceeded to lie on the table.
He said, "Rocky, you met your match".
And Rocky said, "Doc, it's only a scratch.
And I'll be better, I'll be better, Doc, as soon as I am able".

Now Rocky Raccoon, he fell back in his room,
Only to find Gideon's Bible.
Gideon checked out, and he left it, no doubt,
To help with good Rocky's revival.

My Interpretation:For me, this song has personal meaning. Jealousy is serious problem for me. I keep it hidden, but whenever I begin to act on it, absolutely nothing good comes of it. Rocky, jealous of the man that took his girl from him, acts on his jealousy, instead of coming to terms with the fact that she had found someone else, and it ultimately leads to his downfall. Just how I interpret the lyrics.

General Comment:Anybody out there familiar with Firesign Theater? Here's their sideways reference to Rocky Raccoon, in their comedy album, "The Further Adventures of Nick Danger:"

    ROCKY

Worthless?! Ha! Ha! Ha! (cough cough) Not to Melanie Haber!

    NICK

    Melanie Haber?

    ROCKY

You may remember her as... Audrey Farber?

    NICK

    Audrey Farber?

    ROCKY

    Susan Underhill?

    NICK

    Susan Underhill?

    ROCKY

How about... Betty Jo Bialowski! (organ fwah)

    NICK

(thinking) Betty Jo Bialowski! I hadn't heard that name since college. Everyone knew her as Nancy.

General Comment:Definitely a parody of Dylan's John Wesley Harding album. More evidence is from the version of Rocky Raccoon on Anthology 3, which includes a spoken intro saying how Rocky was "from a little town in Minnesota."

My Interpretation:I absolutely LOVE this song, the ragtime feel and the piano are amazing.

But as an idea, not that it affects the song to me at all, but I'm almost certain the multiple names is an allusion to the fact that she's a harlot of some sort. It would fit perfectly with the somewhat nonsensical nature of the song, and I have a very hard time believe that he would write two lines of song detailing all of those names people call her if it was just her name broken up, "Lil' Nancy McGill," or whatever, because that wouldn't have been worth two lines of explanation.

My Interpretation:Go with me on this one. you have a girl you like. Some guy steals her away. In a last act of desperation, you try to win her back, but lose terribly. Then . . . well then you get better ("revival"). Classic feel good song.

General Comment:I think there's obviously a lot of dylanesque lyrics in this song, especially from his John Wesley Harding album released the year before and I would assume it is done knowingly. But whether done as a spoof or a tribute or just a joke I don't know, but I think it is all in good fun as such amazing musicians probably had a great deal of respect for eachother.

There is a pretty good read on the subject here:
    morethings.com/music/beatles/…

it also mentions simon/garfunkels dylan parody "A Simple Desultory Philippic"

My Interpretation:I think this is just a simple ballad.

A lot of Paul's music seems to have a common theme of fate. Songs like 'The Long and Winding Road', ' 'Maxwell's Silver Hammer', etc. describe characters who sort of have reoccurring episodes of destiny. Rocky is running away and giving in to his jealous behavior but is confronted by Guidon's Bible every step of the way.

At the end of the day, Paul is not trying to take an opinion on what happened. Rocky lost the girl but, because of it, he apparently was saved. It's left unclear whether the story is a tragedy or blessing-- it just gives an outsider's perspective on plain, everyday irony.

General Comment:I imagine that Rocky picked up gideons bible and put it in his pocket. As he got shot, the bullet hit the bible and saved his life, leaving him with only a scratch.

Also notice the way there is three names to each rival charactor. Lill/McGill/Nancy & Dan/Danny Boy/ Daniel
