Take advantage of these times, you said
You let me down
It hasn't been the first time

As I'm falling in the pit of fire
My mind's made up
I'm never coming back here

[Chorus]
And how long would it take me
To walk across the United States
All alone?
The west coast has been traumatized
And I think I'm the only one
Still alive

Is it just a coincidence
To see you by
Yourself with no direction?

Now it's time to move on and
Don't you know
That things aren't getting better

[Chorus]

When the world caves in
What'cha gonna do?
When the world caves in
What'cha gonna do for me?
What'cha gonna do for me?
What'cha gonna do for me?
What'cha gonna do for me?

(Don't try and stop me
Because I'm falling fast
Into this pit of fire
Which surrounds us all

In a blanket of fear
That I've been wrapped in for years?
Don't try and stop me
You can't stop me)

[Chorus: x2]

General Comment:This song is about grunge in the 90's and wanting out of the general depression of 90's American popular culture.

Grunge was started in Seattle, on the West Coast. Seattle was the huge grunge town. Everyone believed hugely in grunge, in depression, everyone into rock was always very sad, like the world was caving in.

This song is about Jim Adkins wanting out of the depression. Out of the Seattle scene. He wants to change the world, but no one else does.

He wants out of the trauma from Seattle so badly that he is willing to walk across the entire United States by himself.

EVERYONE is totally caught up in grunge, so he'll definitely be alone. He wants to change the world. He thinks he's the only one who doesn't want to be depressed.

His question to all of the grunge fans who felt alone and depressed: "Is it just a coincidence to see you by yourself with no direction?"

This song is about changing the world. "Don't you know that things are getting better?" This about being positive.

He would walk across the entire United States to make people feel better.

You'd get a pretty big blister from all of that walking.

General Comment:I agree about how the lyric:"How long would it take me to walk across the United States all alone" is one of the best lyrics. The way he sings it makes it even more amazing.

General Comment:As has bee said said by quite a lot of other people, it's about being let down by a friend:
    "You let me down.
It hasn't been the first time." Pretty self explanatory

"As I'm falling in the pit of fire my mind's made up.
I'm never coming back here." Falling in the pit of fire being the feeling of being let down by a friend, never coming back self explantory again

"How long would it take me to walk across the United States all alone." Doing things without his "friend"

"I think I'm the only one still alive." He feels alone because his friends let him down, making him feel alone.

"Is it just a coincidence to see you by yourself with no direction.
Now it's time to move on." Seeing the "friend" again, not knowing what to do, he tells himself to move on, and not get involved again, because he'll get let down again.

"Don't you know that things aren't getting better.
Don't try and stop me." Thing's aren't getting better since he left, but he doesn't want his "friend to stop him, because that'l make things worse"

"In a blanket of fear that I've been wrapped in for years.
You can't stop me." Fear of leaving his "friend" because he's been there for so long? You can't stop me (from leaving)

"When the world caves in what are you going to do for me?" When things go bad, what are you going to do to help me?

General Comment:I have loved Jimmy Eat World for a long time. I saw them live for the second time recently and they played this song, which is definitely one of my favorites, if not my favorite. It was great live.

Great tune, great lyrics. I quote the chorus too much for my own good
