I read a note my grandma wrote back in nineteen twenty-three
Grandpa kept it in his coat, and he showed it once to me
He said, "Boy, you might not understand, but a long, long time ago,
Grandma's daddy didn't like me none, but I loved your Grandma so"

We had this crazy plan to meet and run away together
Get married in the first town we came to, and live forever
But nailed to the tree where we were supposed to meet, instead
I found this letter, and this is what it said

If you get there before I do, don't give up on me
I'll meet you when my chores are through
I don't know how long I'll be
But I'm not gonna let you down, darling wait and see
And between now and then, till I see you again
I'll be loving you. Love, me

I read those words just hours before my Grandma passed away
In the doorway of a church where me and Grandpa stopped to pray
I know I'd never seen him cry in all my fifteen years
But as he said these words to her, his eyes filled up with tears

If you get there before I do, don't give up on me
I'll meet you when my chores are through
I don't know how long I'll be
But I'm not gonna let you down, darling wait and see
And between now and then, till I see you again
I'll be loving you. Love, me
Between now and then, till I see you again
I'll be loving you. Love, me

Song Meaning:It's about a boy reading an old letter a couple hours before his grandma dies. When the grandpa sees his dying wife. He says what the letter says:
If you get there before I do, don't give up on me
I'll meet you when my chores are through
    I don't know how long I'll be
But I'm not gonna let you down, darling wait and see
And between now and then, till I see you again
I'll be loving you. Love, me.
Meaning to wait for him in heaven he just needs to finish his life "chores" on earth.

General Comment:Seems to me that the grandson in the song is saying that he read those words while standing in the doorway of a church where he and his grandfather stopped to pray for his grandmother's recovery, which of course did not happen.

General Comment:I've always been confused by one lyric in here:

I read those words just hours before my Grandma passed away
In the doorway of a church where me and Grandpa stopped to pray
I know I'd never seen him cry in all my fifteen years
But as he said these words to her, his eyes filled up with tears

Is it saying that his Grandma passed away in the doorway of the church? Always read strange to me.

General Comment:The first time the chorus is sang is pretty self-explainatory, the grandma says that while she is doing her chores she couldn't meet him; it's the second time the chorus is sang that the true meaning of love is brought in. Basically, Grandpa is sending a letter to Grandma in the heavens.

"If you get there before I do" (If you reach the afterlife before I do)

"Don't give up on me. I'll meet you when my chores are through, I don't know how long I'll be."
(After Grandpa's remaining time/tasks to be settled on Earth, he'll join Grandma in heaven again)

"But I'm not gonna let you down, darling wait and see
And between now and then, till I see you again
I'll be loving you. Love, me"
(Grandpa reiterates that his love for his departed wife will never wane, and he promises to meet her after he's done)

It's a sad but very meaningful song.

General Comment:It's a story in a song and I just love the way the chorus actually links the whole song together, even up to the point that the grandpa says his final words to his beloved.

General Comment:I'll always know this song as a song that has sentimental value to me. It means more to me than any other song, because when my grandmother died I sang it at her funeral...Although I had to tweak the lyrics a bit, but that's beside the point. I love this song, and it is beautiful.
