One, two, three, four, five against one
Five, five, five against one
Said one, two, three, four, five against one
Five, five, five, five, five against one

Torture from you to me
Abducted from the street

I'd rather be,
I'd rather be with,
I'd rather be with an animal

Why would you want to hurt me? Oh
So frightened of your pain
oh yeah, ooh

I'd rather be,
I'd rather be with,
I'd rather be with an animal
I'd rather be,
I'd rather be
I'd rather be with an animal

I'd rather be,
I'd rather be with,
I'd rather be with an animal
I'd rather be,
I'd rather, rather be, oh
rather be with an animal

Said one, two, three, four, five against one
Five, five, five, five, five against one
One, two, three, four, five against one
Five, five, five, five, five against one, said

General Comment:In an interview with Melody Maker in 1993, Eddie Vedder stated:

"some person at the record company said the other day that they wanted the vocals turned up. He wanted people to understand exactly what I was singing. So I told him what it was about and he said, 'You're right. Let's leave the vocals as they are. Maybe we don't really want people to understand it.'"

Song Meaning:I really never thought of a rape scenario here... really, you people are sick...

I allways think in 5 police officers beating one single person, it happens a lot, and theres that infamous video of the 5 police beating a black man. Then i totally understand and share the part "i rather be with an animal" than a police man... ya know?

Great song, may be the best from VS

General Comment:The argument could be made that Animal is about an abused dog.

"Why would you want to hurt me?"

That line shows a wide-eyed innocence that isn't typical of the human characters in Ed's lyrics.

General Comment:I believe the great beauty of any art (e.g. Music) is that it is open to countless interpretations. Don't ever think that you are "wrong" for mentioning how you see something, because it is like Dreams, they are your own. You can always share your views, just don't force them on other people.

General Comment:when i first heard this song (which was actually about 3 hours ago, haha i hadnt heard a lot of the stuff off vs before) but anyways, i assumed "i'd rather be with an animal" meant like.. i'd rather live with animals then deal with bullshit human beings.

i still tend to think that's what it is, but since it's eddie vedder, i'd also guess that it is about gang rape or the media... its eddie vedder! lol, when dont his songs have multiple meanings?

    My Interpretation:Yeah, I'm with Cornerstone.

It's probably about rape and Eddie Vedder was just a lil' too embarrassed to talk about such a sensitive topic for so many women.

Think about it. "Abducted from the STREET". That line says it all. Animals that we eat/torture are usually raised on farms, or in the forest, or in the sea, not the street. The only animals you see on the street are generally, dogs, cats, rats, and raccoons, squirrels, and other animals that we DON'T eat/torture.

So we're talking about someone abducted from the street and would rather be with an animal. It's obvious an animal would rather be with another animal, that's not big news and an animal wouldn't refer to an animal as an animal, just as another thing like itself, unless it was a different animal. A woman however saying I'd rather be with an animal is the ultimate insult to a MAN.

General Comment:guitar0zero is the only one that mentioned what I have heard for years and years that this song was about - the rest of the band and the manager being very satisfied with their super-stardom after "Ten", and so wanted to stay in the same relatively commercial territory that album explored. I mean, Jeff Ament and some of the other members formerly of Green River and Mother Love Bone said they wanted to go in a more "commercial" direction with their music in their next band. That band happened to be Pearl Jam.

Eddie Vedder, on the other hand, as is well documented in the press and his lyrics, had a Kurt Cobain-esque reaction to the fame his first record engendered. He wanted to go in a more punk/experimental direction (which they did with VS. and especially Vitalogy) - those sounds were his roots, too, and unlike the rest of the band, he wanted to stay true to them.

There's lots of evidence with this, such as the other members of PJ complaining about songs like "Spin the Black Circle", saying, essentially, "we don't like this, this is the kind of song we would have done years ago in Green River", implying that's the kind of music that didn't get us famous, i.e. not commercial enough. Whereas Eddie was much happier doing the exact opposite, and playing more underground music. If you notice after Ten a lot of the guitar-heroics and mainstream rock cliches were taken out of the band in favor of more punkish/folk elements, power chords instead of Hendrix-riffs, etc.

Five against one. For them to stay a band this long, they must have come to a compromise at some point, which I guess they did in the late 90's judging by the sound they were putting out then and ever since, not as punk as Vitalogy but not as commercial as Ten.

General Comment:this is about something that happened in real life.
i don't remember the guys name.
there was this guy who got pulled over for drunk driving.
he resisted arrest but it wasnt really violent.
so the cop called for backup.
when back up came, they would hit the guy to get him to stop.
they went over board and starting beating him to a bloody pulp.
i'm gonna try looking for the guys name and put it on here later.
