Hold on to the thread
The currents will shift
Glide me towards
You know something's left
And we're all allowed
To dream of the next
Oh, oh the next, time we touch

Uh huh, uh huh
Uh huh, uh huh

You don't have to stray
Tho oceans away
Waves roll in my thoughts
Hold tight the ring
The sea will rise
Please stand by the shore
Oh, oh, oh, I will be
I will be there once more

Uh huh, uh huh
Uh huh, uh huh
Uh huh, uh huh
Uh huh, uh huh
Uh huh, uh huh

General Comment:I think this song is about reincarnation. That when we die we will be reunited with those we love..soulmates in the ocean (universe)..and after a while will begin again on another lifetime.

Song Meaning:In MTV's Unplugged Eddie Vedder said:
"[that was] a little love song I wrote about my surfboard...no actually it's to somebody named Beth who hopefully I'll see tomorrow."

General Comment:Listen to this song by the /ocean/ at night, it's perfect. The drums, hollow feeling, weird vocal effect, just everything has such a cold lonely watery feeling. That was explained horribly. This song is amazing. It creates such a feeling, and I think that alot of people could relate to it. Waiting by the shore... for what most likely won't come...

General Comment:Eddie said on Unplugged that it's about his surfboard, but I can also see it being an anti-breakup song.

Love the Unplugged version to death.

Thought the opening verse was "Hold on to the thrill"

General Comment:i think the whole "this is a song about my surfboar. nah its actually about a girlnamed beth"...refers to the next song State of Love and Trust...i think its about leaving for a while...like going off to war or some sort of journey

General Comment:I have a "bootleg" copy of MTV's Unplugged and he starts the show with this song. I just watched it again last night and after the song he says:
"That was a love song about my surfboard (laughs)...nah, actually its a song I wrote for Beth, who I hope I get to see..." I have it on VCD and its great. "State of Love and Trust" and "Porch" are AWESOME on it.

General Comment:I read an interview with one of the band members (I think it was Jeff) where he said that Eddie was constantly listening to Quadrophenia when he wrote the songs for Ten. On that album, the ocean is a symbol of spirituality and love. The difference is that on Quadrophenia the metaphor applies to Jimmy's inner struggle, whereas here it's about a relationship.

General Comment:is this not the most beautiful song ever made? turn it up LOUD when your listening, it just has such a profound effect on you.

i love the way the song compares to forces of love with the beauty of the ocean.

    "And we're all allowed
    To dream of the next
Oh, ohh the next, time we touch..."

...sends a shiver down my spine, every time.
