I remember when I was told the story of crushed velvet, candle wax, and dried up flowers.
The figure on the bed all dressed up in roses, calling, beckoning to sleep, offering a dream.

The words were as mystical as purring animals.
The cricle of rage, the ghost on the stage appeared.
Time was so tangible I'll never let it go.
Ghost stories handed down reach secret tunnels below.
No one could can see me

Whoooooaaa
I fell into yesterday
whooooooaaa
Our Dreams seemed not far away
I want to, I want to, I want to stay
Whoooooaaa
I fell into fantasy

The girl on the wall always waited for me
She was always smiling
The teenage death boys
The teenage death girls
And everyone was dancing
Nothing could touch us then
No one could change us then
Everyone was dancing
Nothing could hurt us then
No one could see us then
Everyone was dancing
Everyone was dancing

Our dreams seemed not far away
Our dreams seemed not far away
Our dreams seemed not far away
I fell into fantasy

My Interpretation:Okay, this is the way I felt after my school dance. (Yes, I'm only 12) Everybody was dancing... and "the girl on the wall (you know, like one you can sit on) was his date. EVerybody was happy ("our dreams seemed not far away") but that was a while ago. Time change. Anyway, great song.

General Comment:i'd like to believe it was a deeper meaning than just missing the past times as a band.
i think it's a pass time in his actual life.
    that sounds confusing
but what i mean is like its a past time when he was a teen..hes seeing back to where he was and who he was and what he was afraid of. i don't agree with the old band thing. some of their songs are about fame but there are much deeper meanings built into that definitely.

X Bye the way.. a phoenix is a bird in Egyptian mythology that that lived in the desert for like forever years and then consumed itself in fire, Incinerating itself into ashes to later rise reborn. X
    -that was writting by ka11itkarma
and that actually is significant to the song.
i agree with them on many points.
they said she he was a teenager going to a funeral and realizing how it was impossible to avoid death. when he was a teen he didn't realize death..he saw life as going on forever..he could dance and nothing could touch him, not death, not pain, just dancing and parties. now look back at the phoenix definition. [lived in the desert forever, incinerated, and reborn] and they've actually used the word incinerate in songs. incinerate...turning your self into? morphing. so he'd be morphing himself into something. it says that the pheonix "consumed itself in fire", so that tells me the death wasn't accidental.

General Comment:i agree with inkbl00d, that this song is about not wanting to let go. Davey sounds like he's reminicing about the good times he had when there wasnt so much commercial pressure on the band
    "Nothing could touch us then
No one could change us then"
And about not wanting to let go "Time was so tangible i'll never let it go, i fell into yesterday"
    just my take on it...
oh ... did i mention that this is amazing song?

General Comment:I think this song is about not wanting to let go of the past (Time was so tangible i'll never let it go, i fell into yesterday) cuz the past is full of good memories, and happy times, while the future is full of uncertainty and possibly suffering.

Thats my take on it, anyway

General Comment:Oh my... Well said, 4.Ever and a day!!! They're relly, really, relly NOT emo at all. And I agree AFI is one of the best bands ever. People who judge them without really listening the lyrics are fucking idiots.

This was the first AFI song i heard and it blew me away. You really can't get sick of this song ever, no matter how many times you hear it. And Davey has the most amazing voice ever. I love his screams and I love his whispers.

Omfg i used to like this song until i read the lyrics. AFI are emo poo eaters who need to die. Good song, bad bad bad bad lyrics

Umm, first of all, AFI is not emo, nor are they poo eaters. Grow up and get better insults. Second, AFI do not need to die, thye are one of the best bands ever, past and present. Stop being a hater, and learn to appreciate Davey's poetic lyrics, look into the song, not just the superficial lyrics.

General Comment:Phoenix is a symbol of Scorpio, and Davey Havok is a Scorpio, one of the most influential artists in a long time that provide the full effect of Scorpio. If you are a Scorpio, I suggest looking into the songs more and finding parts about yourself that you've never known. And if you are not a Scorpio, listen to this man if you need to understand one. Davey has obviously gone through so many rebirths, and his creative power even changes his band. Davey is a vampire in a sense, like a Scorpios who are aware of who and what they are. They will always live. Blood will always be a symbol of love, and what comes with that love comes pain too. Maybe when he wrote things, he didn't understand the power at the time, but I think he did. The Phoenix Theatre thing makes sense, but overall, I see and hear underlying meanings and messages. I feel like he holds himself close to his heart in the sense of how stars concern his life and affect who he is. Also, it is so much more widely except to say something about the Phoenix Theatre then to talk about how you're a Scorpio. I am sure the two things are combined, as the Phoenix Theatre brought great change into his life, really made him die and become reborn, gave him something he didn't know before, it helped him further form his own identity through music, through his fans, and through his own energy and power. I do think the phoenix theatre thing is right on, especially if he says so, but I'm sure he'd like it if people excepted what he is. You don't need to know his birthday to know he's a scorpio. I admire his symbolism, and his awareness. Don't ever think any of it is a coincidence, he knows exactly what he is, even if he won't say "I'm a Scorpio". He says it loud and clear. I swear sometimes I hear him say "I'm a Scorpio" in other songs, though he obviously doesn't and the lyrics are something else, it's just crazy sometimes, that is what i hear. And thats how I knew and found out.

General Comment:I think the meaning is pretty simple. He's reminiscing of the old days when they played and they didn't stand out and everything just worked, the music was enjoyed for what it was without the pressure of having to change due to commercial pressure that comes when a band is exposed to the mainstream. The good old times. He wishes he could go back and feel like that again. The Pheonix reference is obvious. Simple and unconfused meaning to me.

General Comment:Okay. This song is about AFI years ago when they were thinking of breaking up, then they played at the Phoenix Theatre where they played most of their shows when they started out. But after playing at The Phoenix theatre, they decided to continue as a band.

    Lyric Analysis.

The Circle Of Rage: The Mosh Pit
The Ghost On The Stage : The Singer of the band. Someone you can see but can't touch.

Ghost Stories handed down, reached secret tunnels below: Phoenix Theatre is said to be haunted and that there are secret tunnels under the club.

No one can see me: Because it is such a part of the music he blends in, doens't stick out.

our dreams seemed not far away, I want to stay: Them realizing they don't wat to break up. They want to stay together.

I fell into fantasy: Davey has said before all his life he wanted was to be in a band, his fantasy is now reality.

The girl on the wall always waited for me, she was always smiling: in the theatre, there is a girl painted on the wall that is smiling. It can be seen from the stage.

Teengae death boys, teenage death girls: The kids at the shows

Everyone was dancing, no one could touch us then: Everyone moshing and having a good time at the show. nothing else in the world mattered at that moment.
