There is a man holding a megaphone
So he must have been the voice of God
The bystanders claimed they saw angels
Flying up and down the block
Well, they must have been attached to wires
I saw one laying in the lawn with a broken arm
So I called 911
So that's one less founded opinion
One more cause for a dispute
So the street filled like a basin
Up with cameras and their crews
And they washed away the rumors
Leaving just the concrete truth
It was a spectacle
No, I, I mean a miracle
So then I fell like that girl from a balance beam
A gymnasium of eyes were all holding on to me
I lifted one foot to cross the other and I felt myself slipping
It was a small mistake
Sometimes that's all it takes

Now I'm staring at my wrist
Hoping that the timing is right
When the planets will align
There will be no planets to align
Just the carcass of the sun
And those little painted marbles
Spinning senseless through an endless black sky

(And so it never started and it will never stop just like I am and you are)

It was in a foreign hotel's bathtub
I baptized myself in change
And one by one I drowned all of the people I had been
I emerged to find the parallels were fewer
I was cleansed
I looked in the mirror and someone new was there
Still I was as helpless as a chess piece
When I was lifted up by someone's hand
And delivered from the corner
My enemies had got me in
But in all of my salvation I still felt imprisoned inside
That holding cell that is myself
So I wait for the day when I'll hear the key
As it turns in the lock and the guard will say to me
"Oh, my patient prisoner, you have waited for this day and finally
You are free! You are free! You are freezing"

Now I'm staring at the sun waiting for it to explode
Because a day is gonna come
Don't know when but it will come
And then we will finally know the way out of here

And I will throw away this wrinkled map
And my chart of stars and compass, cracked
And I'll climb that tree all wet with sap
To avoid the hungry beasts below
I'll cut out my lover's tongue and sing
Of a graveyard gray and a garden green
And then we won't have worry no more
No, we won't ever worry again
About how this song or story ends
About how this song and story will end

My favorite part, I get an intense visual,
I fall more and more in love with the words he sings.

This is about god. And about truth, it basically sums up a lot of the song.

Song Meaning:the first part is definatly a cynical look at religion.

"So then I fell like that girl from a balance beam
A gymnasium of eyes were all holding on to me
I lifted one foot to cross the other and I felt myself slipping
    It was a small mistake
    Sometimes that's all it takes"

here i think he is talking about telling his family that he no longer believes in God and he feels that as he tells them more and more of his opinions on the topic they resent him more and more.

"And I will throw away this wrinkled map
And my chart of stars and compass, cracked
And I'll climb that tree all wet with sap
To avoid the hungry beasts below"

i think this is renouncing religion and removing all the bad guidance it gives. the hungry beasts are how he would end up, i see it as christians who crave and live for any kind of proof of god and look too hard for it in situations where there is no proof at all (this relates back to the first verse).

in actuality we all know there is no proof of god, its a similar situation to unicorns or the loch ness monster (the because we cant prove that they dont exist therefore they must arguement), of course its not possible to prove that there isnt a god, but just because you cant prove that something doesnt exist doesnt mean it exists by default. the fact is that no only is the idea of a "god" unscientific, the way in which the theory of god is modified or improved is irrational. even in the face of undisputable evidence there are a lot of people who will deny that the evidence exists to that the bible can remain total fact in their eyes. but hey, if people are happy to live in delusion thats fine; they can waste their lives devoting themselves to something that isnt there, while the rest of us work to make advances in science and improve our understanding of the universe. all religion has ever done is stand in the way of important scientific discoveries.

General Comment:My first thought when i heard this song was definately a sarcastic tone in the beggining. First with the man holding the megaphone, and then "So the street filled like a basin
Up with cameras and their crews
And they washed away the rumors
    Leaving just the concrete truth
    It was a spectacle"
I also saw that as very sarcastic.
The part about when he's looking at his wrist at first i thought he was talking about a watch but when someone was talking about cutting, that seemed to make a lot of sense as well. "I felt myself slipping
    It was a small mistake
    Sometimes that's all it takes"

General Comment:OK I think I know what this song is about. But maybe not.. Honestly, what I love so much about Conor's songs is that you can get these several pages here of completely different meanings and interpretations of a song. And everyone thinks it's incredible! How is that possible? hahaha It's beautiful.

But anyway here is my interpretation:
The scene with the broken-armed angel and reporters with the 'concrete truth' and him falling off his balance beam--I means that he had some sort of faith (of god or anything christian) but that he sort of grew to realize it was fake, and that was all it took to knock him off the balancr beam.

So (i'm doing this verse by verse) he contemplates suicide, because it's all so meaningless and hopeless, the planets above us like marbles spinning sensless in the black sky.

now the rest I believe is about the inherent grace that IS in the universe ..."You are free!" "Lifted" like a chess piece from you're corner...

But still the pain of life is also always present, so he waits for the death, the ultimate "lift" or freedom.

his "wrinkled map" and "compass cracked" are his constant attempt to live happily to wade through life. But he looks forward to death (or maybe just change in general, rebirth) ("a graveyard gray and a garden green") when he can fianlly get up that tree and escape everything and "he won't have to worry no more."

And that's it! Tell me if I'm right or if I'm just projecting my own existensial philophies!

    General Comment:I agree with Jetsabel.
i think the first part is about making a mistake, and it causing terrible consequences in his life. then the part "It was in a foreign hotel's bathtub
    I baptized myself in change
And one by one I drowned all of the people I had been"
is talking about him trying to kill himself.
I'm not as sure about the rest but i think its about him seeing whats on the other side, seeing God but then God sending him back, giving him a second chance of life and when he wakes up again, he's got more hope from God.
    lovely song though.

General Comment:I'm with Jetsabel, I think this song is about a failed suicide attempt and depression. I'm not exactly sure about the very begining part.

"A gymnasium of eyes were all holding on to me" I think this means that everyone thinks he is suicidal so they're watching him.
"It was a small mistake, sometimes that's all it takes" then he tries to kill himself.
The next stanza is him hoping that his suicide will be successful ("I'm staring at my wrist, Hoping that the timing is right") and for him everything will be gone ("There will be no planets to align").
"But in all of my salvation (he survived) I still felt imprisoned inside that holding cell that is myself (but he's depressed)"
"So I wait for the day when I'll hear the key..." I think that part is about him waiting for his depression to end so he'll be him again.
"No, we won't ever worry again" I think that realates back to the first part about people worrying about him.

It doesn't make sense in spots, and I think Conor knows that, because of the last line. These are just my thoughts. It could be about the apocolypse or bunnies or something.
