This has to be one of Pink Floyds great, crazy songs. The lyrics mean absolutely nothing, but the guitar is one of the best for any PF song.

P.S. : Listen to it with the volume all the way up to hear the great guitar.

If all the songs in the world would have to be forgotten, this is the one I'd choose to leave remembered. And I think I know a lot about music, so it's not some random spur of the moment

It's craaaaaaaazy! Very improv-sounding, with the guitar and organ. Sounds like some of The Doors' work, but much higher quality because it's Pink Floyd. Great vocal solo by Roger with the screaming madness!

This song is rad. My only complaint is that they only say "Careful with that Axe Eugene" once in the whole song. That's the coolest part!

Yeah. I love how he gets his voice to sound like the wind.

Echo AeroLed286 on this one. I remember thinking "Hey, I didn't know Ray Manzarek played with them, and Iknow a lot about the Doors" the first time I heard it. The guitar is cool, right, but it's nothing compaired to the feeling, the creeping and shivering atmosphere led by the organ... and the progression to the sheer madness of Roger's shout... This guy is really insane. Hopefully he had music to express it, rather than becoming a psychokiller... (note to all Roger's fans out there : I'm joking...)

An axe murderer claiming their latest victim... played out through music.

The first part is where he's sneaking around... muttering gibberish but generally keeping quiet... then the adrenaline builds up as he gets closer to the victim... then eventually, once they're within reach, he takes to them with his trusty axe :-).

Then we hear the scream of the victim as they realise what's coming to them. That's where the band kicks in and it all goes ballistic... as killer and victim flail around wildly. Then it starts to go quiet... as the victim's life slowly leaves them and then everything slowly fades out....

They did something very similar when they played 'Cymbaline' live in the late '60s, with the sounds of footsteps walking around the venue.

I think 'Careful With That Axe, Eugene', is actually supposed to be phrase the killer says to the victim just before he kills them... like it's his catchphrase he uses before each killing.

And only Roger Waters could create such a violent, depraved character and then call him Eugene :-).

ch0gan is most definitely correct, it is about an axe-murder. But one thing, I feel that the slow, quiet part is a killer and someone he knows sitting down and having a silent, sort of awkward moment. Then Eugene grabs an axe, not knowing what's going on, the victim says "careful with that axe, Eugene." The intense part is the actual killing.....blah....blah....blah

it's definitely an murder scene that this song is describing. there is no band like Pink Floyd when it comes telling a story through an instrumental song. that scream made me jump the first time i heard it. i hope i'm not the only who jumped...

naww-Pink Floyd used to like to give nonsense titles to thier songs.
I think the title is a joking PLAY on axe murder AND playing on the guitar-or axe;
I think this is just a vivid dream, that comes to climax, then recedes.
I love the way the song quietly and delicately builds to a crescendo, then just as delicately fades away....the middle eastern scales add a sense of sensual mystery to it all.
the song was meant to be appreciated as it was under the influence of acid or pot-it had its own meanings howerver covert.

oh-and there is an alternate studio version of this song-titled: 'Come in Number 51, your time is up' that is virtually the same song, as well as a tamer studio version of 'CWTA,E'.
the live version is by far the best!

ok, this is just a theory that I cannot support. There is a steady tock...tock... tock... throughout, so perhaps it is the murderer, just having murdered, chopping at a corpse, or chopping something? And someone sees them from behind, and whispers "careful with that ax Eugene" before seeing the aforementioned chopee, screaming, and then theoretically getting killed? No certainty here, just happpen to be listening to the song. Note: It's funny how many fewer spelling errors there are in the Pink Floyd section .

Hehe. Maybe were just an educated bunch. I haven't heard this song yet. I get scared listening to Pink Floyd on my own but none of my family or friends like it. Shame realy.

Oooh I've heard it now. It's very good, until the screams. Not that that isn't good, but when you're alone in a dark room it's a bit ARGH!

gillianjenkins, get some new friends. Some who DO like Pink Floyd.

Roger Waters's mastery of the inward scream is amazing. a few of my friends and I can pull off this piercing scream for about a quarter of a second each. I have no idea how Waters kept the scream going for as long as he did. It must've hurt...
...A LOT!

Pompei

This song reminds me of when a friend of mine was on shrooms and randomly picked up an axe from the side of the house and started walking around with it.

the best version of this track has to from the first disc of the ummagumma album. its a live version played in manchester i think. the track is longer, and slightly slower, more atmospheric and the scream in the middle is really loud and much more terrifying. i do like the studio version as well tho!

ch0gan probably comes the closest to understanding this song but goes a little overboard on the meaning. I heard that eugene was the name of a real murderer though so thats pretty cool. There are several interviews with the band about this song so search em up and enjoy.

Well...don't need new friends anymore. I've converted them *mwahahahahaha* Granted only 2 of them like any, and that's just Dark Side of the Moon, but progress is progress

And I wouldn't suggest to anyone that they listen to it on their own in a dark room, but what can I say? I'm a masochist, and it was...an experience. Actually less scary that Several Species...

can i say that being a masochist is impossible, and if it we're all masochist's? if thy like to torture themselves, then isnt the best way to torture yourself to NOT torture yourself? because then you want to but you're torturing yourself mentally by NOT doing it. after saying that, theres either no such thing as masochism, or we're all masochists. (i like being a smartass)

I've changed my mind. The best version of this song is from the Pink Floyd - Live At Pompeii video. It is also longer, slower, more-atmospheric and with the bonus advantage of being able to watch the Floyd making beautiful music... literally (sexual reference not intended).
