To me, this song is about a person who has strayed from God and maybe can remember all the good memories when he/she was a kid. When a faith with God is simple and child-like. In the Bible God says that we are to have a child-like faith.
I dunno, if I was in an amazing relationship with a girl and then it collapsed then I would probably take the song in the way everyone else is, but I haven't. I'm struggling with my faith so this song speaks to me.

This is pretty obvious, he is in a relationship where the love is gone but he's too scared to end it. He probably hopes that they will feel the same as they used to about each other

He remembers when they were kids and their relationship used to be so simple and uncomplicated. The last line here, I believe, is talking about how God's angels would watch over them playing together. In this sense he is also saying that God meant for them to be together and I think he always thought he was supposed to marry this girl

Once again, he decides to just close his eyes and forget about his troubles and when the sun rises the next day he will just be a memory to this girl and he will have closure on the relationship. Even though he is hoping for love to come back to them, he wants all his pain to be over and perhaps realizes that the best way to do that would be to just accept that it is over and to forget about each other.
Well, that's my interpretation anyway... these lyrics saved me from a suicide attempt recently so this song is very special to me. Anyway, that's just what the lyrics mean to me
