I'm standing on a bridge
I'm waitin' in the dark
I thought that you'd be here by now
There's nothing but the rain
No footsteps on the ground
I'm listening but there's no sound

Isn't anyone tryin' to find me?
Won't somebody come take me home
It's a damn cold night
Trying to figure out this life
Won't you take me by the hand
Take me somewhere new
I don't know who you are
But I, I'm with you

I'm looking for a place
I'm searching for a face
Is anybody here I know
Cause nothings going right
And everything's a mess
And no one likes to be alone

Isn't anyone tryin' to find me?
Won't somebody come take me home
It's a damn cold night
Trying to figure out this life
Won't you take me by the hand
Take me somewhere new
I don't know who you are
But I, I'm with you

Oh why is everything so confusing
Maybe I'm just out of my mind
Yea yea yea

It's a damn cold night
Trying to figure out this life
Won't you take me by the hand
Take me somewhere new
I don't know who you are
But I, I'm with you

Take me by the hand
Take me somewhere new
I don't know who you are
But I, I'm with you
I'm with you

Take me by the hand
Take me somewhere new
I don't know who you are
But I, I'm with you
I'm with you
I'm with you

General Comment:I can't believe that she was about 17 years old when she came out with this one. Thoughts signifying wisdom and contemplation beyond her years. Amazing.

My Interpretation:This, to me, is about a teenage runaway.

    "I'm standing on a bridge
    I'm waitin' in the dark"

Why a bridge? Bridges are a common suicide spot. End of the rope after a long depression, essentially.

"I thought that you'd be here by now"

Where "you" refers not to a boyfriend, but anyone who cares enough to go out and find her.

    "There's nothing but the rain
    No footsteps on the ground
I'm listening but there's no sound"

She's desperately hoping someone will come for her.

"Isn't anyone tryin' to find me?
Won't somebody come take me home"

A cry for help, for attention and compassion and warmth.

    "It's a damn cold night"

Cold nights matter a lot if you're on the streets.

"Trying to figure out this life"

She doesn't feel she belongs at her home, else she wouldn't have ran. But misery on the streets couldn't possibly be her calling, surely?

"Won't you take me by the hand
    Take me somewhere new
I don't know who you are
    But I... I'm with you"

And finally, someone found her. Someone who cares enough to take her somewhere new, anywhere but where she currently is. She doesn't know who he is, but she'll go with him. The desperation, the cry for help, the depression, it all culminates in this, and maybe things will work out.

General Comment:I think this song is about being lost in the world even though it is so busy. She is lost and lonely and wants someone to help her. Really love it.. its like avril exposed for the first time.

My Interpretation:This song says to me that Avril Lavigne does have brains to write fine decent talented music, instead of the pop bullshit she's doing now.

About the lyrics, seems to me that someone stood her up and that made her feel lonely. And then she finds or hopes to find someone to take her out of that moment.

General Comment:Who knows if anyone will read this but this song is so powerful I feel like I have to still give my take on it...

Most of this song I think is symbolic, so when she is waiting on the bridge for someone this is symbolic of all the times in her life when she was waiting for someone that either never showed or never satisfied her. I think when she says "I thought that you'd be here by now" she is referring to her "perfect guy" that of course never comes.

The next part, "no foot steps on the ground" and "waiting but there's no sound" emphasizes her aloneness as does her questioning isn't anybody trying to find me? I think this is symbolic of where she was at in her career. At this time, she was the new big thing and I think the hollowness that she found there is the inspiration for this song.

The "damn cold night" is symbolic of her utter loneliness in searching for the meaning to this life. She now had it all and realized it didn't satisfy her. But in the midst of this loneliness she feels something. "Won't you take me by the hand take me somewhere new, I don't know who you are but I, I'm with you." I think that in what was maybe her lowest moment, she felt God. She is asking God to take her somewhere new and although she has no idea who God is, she can feel him and knows that he is the key to "finding something new" or finding something that will bring her satisfaction and contentment.

This song then, I think is about her finding God in the depths of her suffering and attempting to be led by him to somewhere else or "some place new"

General Comment:I think it's about how when you love someone but they aren't there so you are left alone and you find out he's not looking for you. Then you have to kind of go on with life alone, and you're waiting for the right person to come along...the one you were meant to be. You're kind of searching for that person and whenever you are with someone you try to have good memories with them. This song is so sad because I can totally relate. I might be wrong though and it being about loving someone that doesn't love you back though.

My Interpretation:This song is absolutly amazing... I have heard amny interpretations from shes figuring out herself to shes a prostitute, however, my opinion is that she got stood up by a guy. It even says in the begining "I thought that you'd be here by now" and "won't somebody come take me home". She listens for his footsteps but theirs no sound. Clearly this was a guy she really trusted to come get her, and now shes alone in a bad situation obviously, at night in the rain without a car, and feels like he really didn't care about her and no one cares about her. When she says "I don't know who you are but I'm with you" she means she feels like she doesn't know the guy she is supposed to be dating anymore. Its sad really. In the second verse she's looking for someone else to help her out but she doesn't know any one. It can be a startling thing when you come to the relization that the world is soo big and full of people you don't know. Avril feels very alone. This is just an incredable song that sums up the feeling of lonliness in a big world so well. Some people can't be trusted and it hurts when you trust some one and they break your trust.
