Lyrics for By Myself as interpreted by Matt

By Myself Lyrics
What do I do to ignore what's behind me?
Do I follow my instincts blindly?
Do I hide my pride away from these bad dreams
And give in to sad thoughts that are maddening?
Do I let it go and try to stand it?
Or do I try to catch them red handed?
Do I trust some and get fooled by phoniness,
Or do I trust nobody and live in loneliness?
Cause I cant hold when I'm strecthed so thin
I make the right moves but I’m lost within
I put on my daily facade but then
I just end up getting hurt again
By myself
I ask why, but in my mind
I find I can’t rely on myself

I can’t hold on
To what I want when I’m stretched so thin
It’s all too much to take in
I can’t hold on
To anything watching everything spin
With thoughts of failure sinking in

If I turn my back I’m defenseless
And to give in to fate seems senseless
If I hide my pride and let it all go on then they’ll
Take from me till everything is gone
If I let them go I’ll be outdone
But if I try to catch them I’ll be outrun
If I’m killed by the questions like a cancer
Then I’ll be buried in the silence of the answer
By myself
I ask why, but in my mind
I find I can’t rely on myself

I can’t hold on
To what I want when I’m stretched so thin
It’s all too much to take in
I can’t hold on
To anything watching everything spin
With thoughts of failure sinking in

How do you think I’ve lost so much
I’m so afraid that I’m out of touch
How do you expect I will know what to do
When all I know is what you tell me to

Don’t you know I can’t tell you how to make it go
No matter what I do, how hard I try
I can’t seem to convince myself why
I’m stuck on the outside (x2)

And as for Linkin Park being sellouts, have you seen their new D.V.D? Watch it and then rethink your earlier statment. And so what if punks and preps like Linkin Park. Their music is unique in that it can be enjoyed by all types of people. Hell, I'm a fifteen year old goth and I still have prep and jock friends along with punk and goth friends. Just because people look different and like different things doesn't mean they should be treated differently or given less respect. That last bit was for everyone.

I find this song much more attractive than the first one. I love the music in the start-up and I love the incredible chorus that repeats until the song is finished.

I love it when Mike and Chester do this technique (like in Figure.09 and By Myself[and its remix]):

Mike says a few lines, Chester finishes with a load scream: "Don't you KNOW!"

-Best Song Linkin Park has ever done!!!

The last repetitionous stanzas just express ultimate frustration with chester screaming the last word at the top of his lungs while Mike says the beginning.
(which is really awesome to me).

Awesome song, I still can't find today a better song!

It's about having people be your "friends" but only use you. Then how others tease you and you want to defend your self but if you lose they take everything. It's about people making you think you are a failure and that you can't trust yourself. That would be someone like me.

I think this song is about someone who's going through a serious problem (maybe drugs?) and feels very isolated and alone. They are used to listening to everyone else, and now they are alone and feel abandoned. They don't know what to do without the other person telling them how to make thier every move and they are confused and scared and don't know what's happening with them.

this song is so much like Good God by KoRn, and the funny thing is theyre my two favorite songs.
This song is about Mike's one girlfriend and their friend Esaul, With You is about that grilfriend and A Place For My Head is about Esaul, and In the End is about Esaul getting hit by a car.

IM NOT LYING ABOUT THE ESAUL STUFF, the demo for a place for my head is titled Esaul and the In the End demo talks about him getting hit by a car at the end of each verse. IM NOT LYING LISTEN TO THE SONGS.

If I were to explain further, Mike's girlfriend used him, and Esaul used him and Brad for money so that he could buy extacy, and I believe that Esaul is the whole reason that Mark left the band leaving a spot open for Chester.

All Linkin Park songs go together.....they are all depressed kids songs....they could all be thrown together in a blender and they mean nothing....their songs are so generic that nobody can say what they mean....only ..what they mean to them.

This song, scares me. Its like they know what's going on in my head! If you had a life like mine, all weird and ignored and have social anxiety disorder, you'll know what I mean. That song means something to me, it like so discribes my stupid social anxiety disorder and how I feel about it and myself. All I can say some LP songs scare me, its like they know what goes inside my head, CREEPAY!

vertisian hit it right on the nose. linkin park isnt the worst of the worst, but they dont deserve all the popularity they're getting. i mean, when you have to scream till ur hoarse to express yourself, its not art anymore.

The first verse means that, that one particular person had this big problem and he/she is trying to deal with it and just cant stand it anymore. So they are trying to make a decision whether to try and figure it out and trust some of their feelings that is telling 'Its no big deal just forget about it' and then he thinks on the other side of the situation that this situation needs to be worked out. So the person ends up making a choice which he believes is the right one and then he starts to think that what he did was wrong. The person starts to think, "what if i fail when I try to bring an answer to all my problems." Second verse is saying that if he, let's just use Chester Bennington here as an example, if Chester tries to ignore all his problems they will build up on him and sooner enough he'll be defenseless and when they do pile up on him he'll probably go blindly, literally, and it's like loosing all his senses. If I dont show my true pride by hiding my strong side then the problems will take every single pride of him from the inside out. If the problem continues to persist on and on and build up and he has nowhere to turn he'll be poisoned with all these problems like how a cancer kills you if you don't do nothing about it. He then starts to ask himself "How Do You Expect I Will Know What To Do, When All I Know Is What You Tell Me To." His conscience is the only part of him that tells him what to do in order to solve his problems. He still ends up having reoccuring problems and doesn't know how to resolve it, no matter what he does, how hard he tries, he cannot seem to convince himself why he cant just figure it out, he's just stuck on the outside with the questions pilling up on him.

Sorry for the long analysis but thats the way i do it i break down the verses and analyze them.

oh by the way fuckeduprockergirl, the lyrics were messed around with while they "reanimated" all the songs. some things got switched around, dumped, and added. they are not the same as in Hybrid theory so if i were u i'd check and make sure all the lyrics are correct

I ABSOLUTELY agree with Froggie Kid. The song's about certainly about SOCIAL ANXIETY DISORDER. If you know what this bloody disorder is about you'd agree with me. The screaming describes exactly how it sometimes feels like. Sometimes I just find myself in a song. I mean there are the same thoughts. This is one of them.

Ok, I'm not trying to say you're all wrong. Not at all. The song can have diferent meanings to diferent people. Just every single word of this song describes Social Phobia or SAD in another words.
