Lyrics for In The End as interpreted by Matt

In The End Lyrics
It starts with one
One thing I don't know why
It doesn't even matter how hard you try
Keep that in mind I designed this rhyme
To explain in due time
All I know
Time is a valuable thing
Watch it fly by as the pendulum swings
Watch it count down to the end of the day
The clock ticks life away
It's so unreal
Didn't look out below
Watch the time go right out the window
Trying to hold on but didn't even know
Wasted it all just to
Watch you go
I kept everything inside and even though I tried it all fell apart
What it meant to me will eventually be a memory of a time when...

I tried so hard
And got so far
But in the end
It doesn't even matter
I had to fall
to lose it all
But in the end
It doesn't even matter

One thing I don't know why
It doesn't even matter how hard you try
Keep that in mind I designed this rhyme
To remind myself how
I tried so hard
In spite of the way you were mocking me
Acting like I was part of your property
Remembering all the times you fought with me
I'm surprised it got so (far)
Things aren't the way they were before
You wouldn't even recognize me anymore
Not that you knew me back then
But it all comes back to me
In the end
You kept everything inside and even though I tried it all fell apart
What it meant to me will eventually be a memory of a time when I tried

I tried so hard
And got so far
But in the end
It doesn't even matter
I had to fall
to lose it all
But in the end
It doesn't even matter

I've put my trust in you
Pushed as far as I can go
for all this
There's only one thing you should know

I've put my trust in you
Pushed as far as I can go
For all this
There's only one thing you should know
I tried so hard
And got so far
But in the end
It doesn't even matter
I had to fall
to lose it all
But in the end
It doesn't even matter

It starts with

I believe the the writer is relecting on his life before he put his trust in to something Real. He looks back and realizes how much he put into life and how little he got out of it. If we gain everything around us that we disire and die the next morning, what are we left with? What really mattered in life now that we are dead? I think that he realized that he had to lose everything he valued to gain something that mattered to him and in life. He put his trust into something (or some One) that gave him a purpose in Life.

This song just is flat out good. I think the video is great, but the video graphics and computerized scenery takes away from the meaning of the point of the song. I find myself watching the whales flying around more than actually listening to the song. It is an awesome song to listen to on the radio or on cd though where you have no distractions. I am however amazed at the concept of the video and the power behind it. Overall..great video, and great song, definitely a great band.

Im my oppinion, this song is about someone trying to fit in with others, putting so much into wanting to be just like "one of the guys" but in the end all his/her work really doesn't matter because it was all for nothing. People can be cruel these days, not really thinking about their actions. Some people can only be pushed so far before a fuse breaks...

This song means that things always start with one thing and most of the time you dont know why they started. you try to explain it but time keeps passing, and when you finally expalin it, it is just a memory of the past.

No matter what you think of the band's image or how "overplayed" they are...there is a reason that they are so big. This song is powerful. I feel that this song says that no matter how hard you try in anything...you're always going to come up short.

you know...it's funny...when i first heard this song, it reminded me of a cross between limp bizkit and n'sync. it's grown on me, though.

i, personally, relate to it. it reminds me of a few friendships i've been in. kinda. but it is a powerful song. gives me a bit more respect for them as a band. did they write this song theirselves?

to me it means that no matter how hard you try at one point, you'll fail, and whatever you did doesn't matter anymore.

i love this song. whenever i listen to it it makes everything ok. it reminds me that someday i will die (the end), and everything thats going on in my life isn't going to matter. it might sound depressing, but it makes you realize that worrying about little things is just going to stress you out and not matter anyway.

This song has a bit deeper meaning to me, because it refered a lot to last year in my life. I met a guy, and we were best of friends, until he devolped Depression. (I say it's depression, He doesn't). Things became *why* too twisted, and yucky, and we ended up fighting a lot. To be honest, I had fallen in love with him, and then I kept trying to pushing him. I was pushing him to get it out of his head my best friend wasn't in love with him, and that he had issues he needed to deal with. When it came down to it, he started saying that it was all my fault. I don't see how it was, but he said that everything, including his depression or "The way I've been feeling," was all my fault. So, when I first heard this song, my mind automaticly clicked. He's tried to be my friend lately, but I know it was just go back to the way it was. :D So, that's how this song has effected my life.

To me, this song talks about being in a relationship..and trying so hard to be evrey thing the other partner wants...but no matter how hard you try..YOU JUST GET SHIT ON ANYWAYZ!....O, and I also disagree on it being about Chesters coke addiction (it has nothing to do w/ terms of an addiction).

OMG i could write 10 pages on this song! loved it the second i heard it. it has so much meaning to me. i went out with this guy and he dumped me. i still loved him. and i tryed so hard to get him back. but in the end it didn't matter. now i hate his guts. this song helped me see that there are other people out there and i just have to go find them!
this is my all time fav song. it changed my tase in music entirly. i used to be in all that bsb crap and stuff! it sux! then b4 they were popular or even on the radios i loved them and got thier CD. i tries to show people how great they were but only my friends who also like LP really knew that they were. now suddenly thier popular and everyone i tried to show how great they were and they all said they sucked, suddenly loved them! fake love only cuz thier popular. then when thier off the radio no one will like them anymore but they rock! and that aint happining with me!

This song doesn't really have to just refer to relationships. It seems that everyone can find something this applies to since everything worth doing takes a lot of hard work and frustration when things aren't going right.

first, i have to agree with Edgy, the "i put my trust in you" part is awesome.
i'm new to songmeanings and i thought it was a place where i could go to discuss the actual meaning of a song rather the how much so and so KICKS ASS and whoever is HOT!!! whatever...
either way, the first two songs i heard by linkin park were one step closer and crawling which i didn't enjoy too much. i thought they were just gonna be another i-hate-my-life-and-i'm-so-angry group.
but then i heard in the end. after paying attention to the lyrics, i developed a new respect for them. i do believe that song is about relationships just like most of the previous comments say. they seem a bit bitter but i guess that's a given when you read the lyics. they send they're message without screaming which is a refreshing change...

The nice thing about lyrics is their ability to mean something different to everyone. Most people have said they relate to this song in terms of boyfriend/girlfriend relationships. Why not? The lyrics can certainly be seen that way. He is singing to someone... that is obvious. Likewise the interpretation that he is singing about life and death, and how the things we do in life don't matter in the end is also a very valid interpretation. The song being about Chester's addiction to coke is also a possibility. The point of this website, I I expect, is to raise awareness about the different aspects of this song. Not to diss it, or to compare it with Nsyncs bubblegum "hip pop". The point is to tell people what you hear of yourself in this song... it has the ability to affect someone deeply at the very roots of their emotional stability. With respect to the interpretations of others (you can agree with me or not) I see the song like this:
The singer is angry. Hurt and pain radiates from his voice, and it is emphasized by the heavy drumbeats and guitar strains. It doesn't matter, he says. In the end it doesn't even matter. Haven't we all felt that way? At least once in our lives haven't we felt that someone is "mocking" us, "acting like I was part of your property" and people who you fought with (your parents? Boyfriend, girlfriend? Teachers? Friends?)"I've put my trust in you..." we all trust someone, even if it's only ourselves. We always get let down, by ourselves or by others (perhaps you expected a better grade than you got... or perhaps your parents got divorced, or your significant other left you) at some point because it's a part of being human. "Time is a valuable thing, watch it fly by as the pendulum swings..." As humans, we are fleeting creatures. We have less than a century to accomplish something worthwhile. That accomplishment could be in a medicinal cure, leading a country-- or even loving someone, raising a child to be better off than you were. We only have so long to do these things, and always we see the prospect of death looming ahead. And it's when we fail that songs like this come into play... I could've done better, I tried so hard to make it work, to do things right... now I failed, I'm out of time, it doesn't even matter...
The first half of the song is in reference to the permanent time frame which we have in life to accomplish something. The seconf half refers to the specific event itself... which will mean different things to everyone. Agree with me or not, this is my opinion.
