Set adrift on memory bliss of you

Baby, you send me
Baby, you send me
Set adrift on memory bliss of you

The camera pans, a cocktail glass
Behind the blinds of plastic plants
You'll find a lady with a fat diamond ring
And then you'll know I can't remember a damn thing
I think it's one of those de ja vu things
Or a dream that's tryin' to tell me something
Or will I ever stop thinkin' about it
I don't know, I doubt it
Subterranean by design
I wonder what I would find if I met you
I let my eyes caress you
Until I meet the thought of Misses' Princess Who?
Often wonder what makes her work
I guess I'll leave that question to the experts
Assuming that there are some out there
They're probably alone, solitaire
I can remember when
I caught up with a pastime intimate friend
She said, "Bet you're probably gonna say I look lovely
But you probably don't think nothin' of me"

She was right, though, I can't lie
She's just one of those corners in my mind
So I just put her right back with the rest
That's the way it goes, I guess

Baby, you send me
Baby, you send me
Set adrift on memory bliss of you
Baby, you send me
Set adrift on memory bliss of you

A careless whisper from a careless man
A neutron dance for a neutron fan
Marionette strings are dangerous things
I thought of all the trouble they bring
An eye for an eye, a spy for a spy
Rubber bands expand in a frustrating sigh
Tell me that she's not dreaming
She's got an ace in the hole
It doesn't have meaning
Reality used to be a friend of mine
'Cause complete control, I don't take too kind
Christina Applegate, you gotta put me on
Guess who's piece of the cake is jacked on?
She broke her wishbone and wished for a sign
I told her whispers in my heart were fine
What did she think she could do?
I feel for her, I really do
So I stared at the ring finger on her hand
I wanted her to be a big P.M. Dawn fan
But I had to put her right back with the rest
That's the way it goes, I guess

Baby, you send me
Baby, you send me
Set adrift on memory bliss of you
Baby, you send me
Set adrift on memory bliss of you

Baby, you send me
Set adrift on memory bliss of you
Baby, you send me
Set adrift on memory bliss of you

Baby, you send me (baby, you send me)
Baby, you send me (baby, you send me)
Set adrift on memory bliss of you (baby, you send me)

Baby, you send me (baby, you send me)
Baby, you send me (baby, you send me)
Set adrift on memory bliss of you (baby, you send me)

Baby, you send me (baby, you send me)
Baby, you send me (baby, you send me)
Set adrift on memory bliss of you

enigmatic. I think it's about a playboy who sees the 'one who got away' is now married. It's about fantasizing or trying to ignore the feelings memories.

He finds the 'one who got away' has a "fat diamond ring" and is shocked ("can't remember a damn thing.") He can't stop thinking about her and how she's married/engaged. The engagement looks perfect on the outside ("an ace in the hole"), but its meaningless. She still "wished for a sign" that this is the right thing. Maybe she still loves him even though she's marrying someone else.

He's used women before with his "marionette strings" and regretted it. One of those exes, a ("pasttime intimate friend") talks about how he doesn't even care about her. And he agrees. He just pushes away the memories of these relationships, denies them until he's no longer connected to reality.

It's oddly nostalgic, but still callous. Like he's saying, "I prefer my memories to your reality."

I heard this song today, and it brought back a ton of memories so I figured I'd look to see if it's on here. It is!

I've always thought this song was about a guy who has a way with the ladies and he sees someone he feels he could possibly love or is in love with but she is married or engaged and then he goes through this whole scenario of how things could play out, but in the end realizes that it would'nt work so he 'had to put her right back with the rest.'

    Great song!

    My Opinion

I really think the Backstreet Boys version of this is better. Slower and more...just better. This one song is a bit busy for me, less "refreshing" than the Backstreet Boys version.

A guy wanting a girl that is with someone else now, he keeps stringing her on with words and songs. Making it hard on her to leave it behind...........I am crazy to think you are looking up this song. You probably don't know about this site.

This song has baffled me for years. I sat up recently with my boyfriend one night and was determined see what he was saying. I think its about a guy who has enjoyed using women as pawns for most of his life but regrets using one that could have been special if he had been willing to try.

    Song Meaning

Like someone mentioned, there's a lot of nostalgia in the lyrics. One question, if anyone knows. I'm pretty sure "a neutron dance for a neutron fan" is in reference to The Pointer Sisters. Is "A careless whisper from a careless man" a reference to "Careless Whisper" by George Michael? It makes sense, but not sure how any of this fits together.

Holiday
Bee Gees
@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday". I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

No Surprises
Radiohead
Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.

Punchline
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran sings about missing his former partner and learning important life lessons in the process on “Punchline.” This track tells a story of battling to get rid of emotions for a former lover, whom he now realized might not have loved him the same way. He’s now caught between accepting that fact and learning life lessons from it and going back to beg her for another chance.
