And now, the end is near
And so I face the final curtain
You cunt, I´m not a queer
I´ll state my case, of which I´m certain
I´ve lived a life that´s full
And each and every highway
And yet, much more than this
I did it my way
And yes, I´ve had a few
But then again, too few to mention
But dig, what I have to do
I´ll see it through with no devotion
Of that, take care and just
Be careful along the highway
And more, much more than this
I did it my way
There were times,
I´m sure you knew
When there was nothing
Fucking else to do
But through it all,
When there was doubt
I shot it up or kicked it out
I fought the just as before
And did it my way
Knocked out in bed last night
I´ve had my fill, my share of looting
And now, the tears subside
I find it all so amusing
To think, I killed a cat
And may I say, oh no, not their way
But no, no, not me
I did it my way
For what is a brat,
What has he got
When he finds out that he cannot
Say the things he truly thinks
But only the words,
Not what he feels
The record shows,
I´ve got no clothes
And did it my way
And so I face the final curtain
You cunt, I´m not a queer
I´ll state my case, of which I´m certain
I´ve lived a life that´s full
And each and every highway
And yet, much more than this
I did it my way
And yes, I´ve had a few
But then again, too few to mention
But dig, what I have to do

Of that, take care and just
Be careful along the highway
And more, much more than this
I did it my way
There were times,

When there was nothing

But through it all,
When there was doubt
I shot it up or kicked it out
I fought the just as before

Second, Sid cultivated his reputation. Few people understand how smart Sid was. He may have made some stupid decisions (like doing heroin or getting involved with nancy), but every other smart person in history has made some stupid choices too. Sid would act up around media and cameras because he knew he had a reputation to maintain and cultivate. There are many interviews with journalists talking about how Sid would be doing something normally until he realized he was being photographed, then he would do something outrageous and spontaneous so that he could provoke a shock, and have all music journalists writing and talking about him and the sex pistols. The interviews with Sid in The Filth and the Fury, particularly the one in Hyde Park, show just how smart, witty, and funny Sid was. He knew what he was doing, and he had a plan all along.
The sex pistols entire image and reputation was highly cultivated to shock mainstream opinion and unsettle the establishment. They did it not for commercial success (only malcolm would say this later, as he tried to rewrite the history making himself out to be the mastermind), the sex pistols were never commercially successful in any real way while they were together anyway. Its bad marketing to tell your audience to fuck off and that you are completely uninterested in them or their money. Johnny's goal with the sex pistols was much more artistic, he wanted to use a band and music to critique British society as he saw it. Johnny wanted to critique the shallow consumerist ideal of late 70s British society through an artistic violent assault on the accepted aesthetic norms of fashion, music, and public behavior. This is why punks came to wear tattered clothing, avoid musical theory, and create a DIY sub-culture independent of capitalist big bussiness and their obcession with profits. though the pistols might never have been signed to an indie label, there were none when they formed, and there would be none without them.
This song is awesome, Paul Anka (the guy who wrote it) always said Sid's was his favorite version.
But anyways -- both this song and Sid weren't meant to be highly acclaimed in a a musical way -- they were highly acclaimed for being so punkass. Someone said it already; he's not a punk rocker, he's a punk.
But yeah, I read everyone's comments and found them very interesting.
Johnny is arrogant, Sid was obnoxious, Steve was a slut, Glen was a total wuss, and Paul was just....well, there. But still, pretty amazing people.
I think Sid wasn't great on bass, but could have maybe pulled off a singing career. I like this song, and also? Something Else is done pretty well, too.
of course sid vicious wasn't any good! but that, sadly, is what made him famous. he was a complete wreck that everyone loved watching. that was his allure.
saying he 'sucks' will do know good, considering he was supposed to suck.. just stating the obvious.
also, whoever called him a nazi is ridiculous - read something about the sex pistols or sid and you'll learn why they wore the swastika.
I love him.
I decided to do my book report on him and I totally fell in love with him. Hahaa. No but seriously, I love Sid and I love The Sex Pistols. Sid couldn't play a single note and that is what makes that band 'Punk.' I always smile when I think of all the things that happened then. It's amazing when you think about it.
Anyway.
Fucking great song.
:)
well, it doesnt say "For what is a brat,
What has he got
When he finds out that he cannot
Say the things he truly thinks" which is really important becasue it says "FOR WHAT IS A BRIT, WHAT HAS HE GOT WHEN HE WEARS HATS & HE CANNOT SAY THE THINGS HE TRULY FEELS"
that is extremely important to know because he WAS talking about john, (THOSE SUBTLE HINTS ARE ABOUT JOHN!!) he is clearly insulting him, i think i had read it in "rotten" which is the best book ever, and on that note, those words angered me so much that sid would say those things about his best friend, because if i'm not mistaken, they all got famous by john saying WHAT WAS ON HIs MIND!!!
PLEASE RESPOND!!!!!!
if you want to argue this, i'm ALL for it & anything sex-pistols-related, i find it amusing
