People say I'm crazy, doing what I'm doing
Well, they give me all kinds of warnings to save me from ruin
When I say that I'm okay, well, they look at me kinda strange
"Surely, you're not happy now, you no longer play the game"

People say I'm lazy, dreaming my life away
Well, they give me all kinds of advice designed to enlighten me
When I tell them that I'm doing fine watching shadows on the wall
"Don't you miss the big time, boy. You're no longer on the ball"

I'm just sitting here watching the wheels go round and round
I really love to watch them roll
No longer riding on the merry-go-round
I just had to let it go

Ahhh, people ask me questions, lost in confusion
Well, I tell them there's no problem, only solutions
Well, they shake their heads and they look at me as if I've lost my mind
I tell them there's no hurry, I'm just sitting here doing time

I'm just sitting here watching the wheels go round and round
I really love to watch them roll
No longer riding on the merry-go-round
I just had to let it go
I just had to let it go
I just had to let it go...

Song Meaning:I'm not sure if anyone's mentioned this already, but when Lennon wrote the "watching shadows on the wall" bit I'm sure he must be referring to Plato's "Allegory of the Cave". I've always liked that part.

My Interpretation:I think this is what its about. During this period, he "retired" from the music industry to concentrate on raising his son Sean with Ono. I think its not so much as him crossing from childhood to adulthood but rather him giving up the music business to be a father.

People say I'm crazy, doing what I'm doing (leaving the music business)
Well, they give me all kinds of warnings to save me from ruin (if you leave you wont make it to the top again)
When I say that I'm okay, well, they look at me kinda strange (He fine just taking care of his kid)
"Surely, you're not happy now, you no longer play the game" (Cant be happy since your not making music or in the music business anymore)
People say I'm lazy, dreaming my life away
Well, they give me all kinds of advice designed to enlighten me (encourgement that he could be a father and musician at the same time.)
When I tell them that I'm doing fine watching shadows on the wall ( he ok watching his kid grow up)
"Don't you miss the big time, boy. You're no longer on the ball" ("Dont you want to be 1# in the music business again?")
I'm just sitting here watching the wheels go round and round (Him watching his kid group up over time)
I really love to watch them roll (He loves watching his kid grow up)
No longer riding on the merry-go-round (No longer worrying about his own life but him having to worry about his son growing up)
I just had to let it go (had to leave the business to raise his kid.)

Of course this is my point of view so let me know what you think.

My Interpretation:The song is about crossing from your youth and youthful ideas into adulthood. When he sings "No longer riding on the merry-go-round" and "I just had to let it go" he's talking about no longer clinging to his youth, self doubt and need to be on top of everything. This is Lennon, the middle-aged man, content with himself the way he is, or was. Mature.

Memory:Every time I hear this song I can't help but tear up.

I was a photojournalist that worked my way up to a major newspaper in a highly competitive field. Eventually I became director of photography. I didn't like the person I had become. I had ulcers. My marriage and kids were suffering. So, "I just had to let it go."

I completely threw away my 15-year photojournalism career in a blink of an eye to become a wedding photographer, and stay-at-home Dad during the week. People DID say I was crazy. People did try to give me advice on why I should get back in the game. I lost my friends who could no longer relate to me. People judged me for "losing my ambition." I lost the identity I had my entire adult life.

One day, this song came on the radio and I realized every word of it could be the anthem for what I was going through. My eyes filled up with tears and I just started crying. It was as if I had finally gotten the opportunity to grieve over the loss of a loved one—my former identity.

Here was John Lennon telling me it was okay to make the choice I had made. That I wasn't crazy after all. That everybody else might not understand, but that is okay as long as I do.

Ever since that moment, this song has been the anthem for my life. The ultimate symbol for empowering yourself to take charge of your life, control your own destiny and let others think whatever they are going to think.

Thank you so much John Lennon.

Song Meaning:This song is simply about someone who doesn't have motivation for financial or material success and wants to simply do what they love (in this case, it's being a stay-at-home dad with his son).

General Comment:This is John telling the "world"that it doesn't have any control over him and never really did; he's saying that it really doesn't matter that their preferences and expectations of him are that he should be out chasing "more"money, fame, adoration etc. He's happy with his role as a songwriter, singer, recording artist, parent, partner, lover, beloved, ..... whatever. He's just happy watching all the mice rolling the treadmill; it wasn't making him happy doing the same thing so.... he just had to let it go.

General Comment:It's about him taking his 5 year break from music isn't it? 'No longer riding on the merry-go-round,I just had to let it go' He was in such a great place and at peace with himself at this stage of his life,How many of us will ever be able say that?RIP John.

General Comment:Well I met a guy in NYC who has a huge amount of information on John Lennon and his death. This guy actually goes around displaying banners in a white van upper west side of manhattan and he does have a website. Talking to this guy (most would take him for a WACKO because of his cause - well this guy was very very intelligent and I believe he spent time in one of the IVY league colleges). one day on the street, he told us that John Lennon discovered or had some information about Gas and Oil and its use. Lennon told this to some of his close friends or something and eventually word leaked out to the US government FBI/CIA or something. Apparently this information was damaging to the OIL industry and the money flow. The govt reps whoever they were approached Lennon and told him to keep his info under wraps, but Lennon did not abey. Apparently this guy said Lennon put secret messages or codes in his lyrics. Specifically this song was mentioned "Watching The Wheels" go round and round. And told us that this basically meant that Lennon is talking about Automobiles and the wheels keep turning (burning gas) and that his is going to spread the word so people can realize something. Unfortunately the public never learned anything because of his death. I am not sure if I believe all of this. However I dont think one comment about this sone on this website is close to any real meaning of this song. I agree that Lennon and many other lyricists do code hidden meanings into songs which few will ever understand or decode. But I will say that this guy who we met in the street in Manhattan really had some details which were incredible and I could not understand why someone would go through all this just to drum up some WACKO conspiracy with any or partial TRUTH being ACTUAL FACTS. here is the guys website lennonmurdertruth.com/

General Comment:Great song about how he's happy just doing what he's doing, whilst people are trying to get him to write more music / tour / take part in other media. He really had found inner peace and happiness.
