This song embodies a girl who presents to the world--to her lover-- a facade of flawless, albeit airbrushed, perfection. Her responses are premeditated, calculated and scripted, just like her heart--which she does not easily hand to just anyone.
There is a thin line between love and hate. To feel hate, one must have felt love. To her, love is a game which she feels she must win, because she has lost before (maybe due to a broken childhood, "waif") and to lose again would be devastating.
In fact she feels deeply and strongly, and although she is bleeding from the heart, no one knows. Perhaps no one bothered to ask or perhaps she is a brilliant actress and hides it so well. He sees through this and yearns to climb over the walls she has built, to break through her click-track heart.
He loves her in spite of herself.
A click track is a recorded backing to a live performance. It can be used either as the entire sound where the performers mime along, or as an enhancement to the live on-stage sound.
the person is just going through the motions following the direction of what they think normal is. theyre too perfect, b/c they arent allowing any real emotion to shine through their silk screen. theyre keeping up with the click track but the performance isnt live. the singer is trying to get beneath the surface b/c he loves this person and wants them to know they dont have to be perfect all the time and they dont have to feign "love" all the time, they can be less than perfect without the black/white..love/hate attitude. its got nothing to do with fashion or pretense in the sense of stylings or beauty... its about this person creating a "self-escape" where they disconnect from reality.
Loretta Young represents an impossible, idealized image. In the context of the song she represents the vanity, shallowness, and obsession with perfection that a girl has.
