The drunk kids, the Catholics
They’re all about the same
They’re waiting for something
Hoping to be saved
Well, I have been happy the past couple days
Just thinking of the women who’ve taken your place
And every night I think I certainly won't ever sleep sober or alone
And then suddenly it occurs to me
I've slept alone before you
And so I pour myself the stiffest drink that my stomach can stand
And convince myself to lay back down again
I’m gonna lay back down, I’m gonna lay back down again
The drunk kids, the Catholics
They're all about the same
They’re waiting for something
Hoping to be saved
The drunk kids, the Catholics
They're all about the same
They’re waiting for something
Hoping to be saved
The drunk kids, the Catholics
They're all about the same
They’re waiting for something
Hoping to be saved
They crawl from the oceans
To paint in the caves
But I’m working all weekend
I need to get paid
They crawl from the oceans
To paint in the caves
But I’m working all weekend
I need to get paid
They crawl from the oceans
To paint in the caves
But I’m working all weekend
I need to get paid
They crawl from the oceans
To paint in the caves
But I’m working all weekend
I need to get paid

My Opinion:This is one of my favourite songs. It's utter brilliance.

'And every night I think I certainly won't ever sleep sober or alone, and then suddenly it occurs to me, I've slept alone before you'

How a person can put such words together is beyond me.

To me this is obviously about an ex, that he is still madly in love with, and can't handle that, so he drowns this out of his mind with alcohol or other women, and also that we as humans have grew so much, but we can't enjoy the life that we should because we 'need to get paid'

General Comment:I know not all catholics are drunks, but most of the kids in my class have dabbled in some kind of alcohol. Really, I'd do anything to transfer schools. I had a theory for this song, but it just sort of it escaped me. But the just of it would be that these lovely catholics I meet with every morning of every week day; its more like do whatever you want - repent later. You're drilled with these values and stuff, but in the end people think they live a separate life from religion. Like 9 to 12 is be a perfect student, then its lets skip next period or get super drunk and do some things in some empty classrooms. But this is me, venting my frustration on having to attend a Catholic School. Don't do it your kids. But okay, underlying - Catholics somethings going to save us, if we believe God he's going to swoop down and save us; why would we do anything to have to deserve it? And Drunk Kids, I should quit drinking, oh, wait no, look beer - not my strongest subject. I'll ask my classmates and get back.

General Comment:eh as much as I hate to admit it but this song is saying that drunk kids and Catholics are identical because they both look for something that won't come. It's a very depressing and hopeless song and this is the first time I actually don't agree with a song written by Connor Oberst

General Comment:I don't think Conor's saying anything about Catholics being drunks
he's saying it more like drunk kids and Catholics are alike in the way they both are waiting for something
Drunk kids might be drinking to fill some void while they're waiting to be saved
and Catholics are waiting for Christ to come to earth

General Comment:I think what Iggy said makes the most sense.

"I don't think this song is about catholics being drunks. I think it has more to do with the fact that most people drink and believe in God for solace. They want to believe that there is something that can save them. Religion is a forced addiction - like alcohol - people keep on going back, week after week, hoping to finally find that something to set them free."

And now it's making me think of my parents..

General Comment:This is a wonderful song that really speaks to me.
Though some people are assuming that he's still catholic, I kinda doubt it. My mom grew up in a catholic household and went to a catholic school, and she turned out very atheist. Actually, in an interview he said that he would classify himself as agnostic. But thats just minor details, It doesn't have to much with the song, I just thought I'd mention it.

I agree with everyone with the comparison of drunks and catholics (Or, really, religious people in general).

Escaping from reality, is what I think of. When you get drunk you kind of lose touch with reality and you feel, in a way, more secure. They try to get rid of their troubles and their worries with drinking. While Catholics do it with their religion. They try to, hm, this may sound offending, but they try to lose touch with reality and try to secure themself in a fantasy. A fantasy of the safety of afterlife. They wait for something to save them, and they try to repress worries that way. Its hard for me to explain what I mean. Heh....

The drunks wait for something to come on its own and they use their alcohol to feel free and safer.
The catholics wait for afterlife and they use their religion for safety.

I tried to sum it up but it didn't turn out well... Oh whatever, I guess it doesn't matter if anyone gets what I'm talking bout. Why do I make such long posts?

I love this song so much. And the guy from The Faint sings well with Conor, I think. But the lryics are the best.

General Comment:i think hes just comparing how catholics and drunk kids are alike in how their looking for answers through drinking in the drunk kids case, and god in the catholics case.
