Lyrics for No Womanm No Cry as interpreted by kevin

No Womanm No Cry Lyrics
No woman no cry
no woman no cry
no woman no cry
no woman no cry
Say I remember when we used to sit
in the government yard in Trenchtown
Ob- observing all the hypocrites
as they'd mingle with the good people we met
Good friends we had and good friends we lost
along the way
in this bright future
you can forget your past
so dry your tears I say.
no woman no cry
no woman no cry

Hey little darling don't shed no tears
no woman no cry
I remember when we used to sit
in the government yard in Trenchtown
and then georgie would make a fire light
as it was love wood burning through the night
and we would cook wholemeal porridge
of which I'd share with you
my feet is my only carriage
so I've got to push on through
but while I'm gone (I mean it)
ev'rything's gonna be alright
ev'rything's gonna be alright
ev'rything's gonna be alright
ev'rything's gonna be alright
ev'rything's gonna be alright
ev'rything's gonna be alright
ev'rything's gonna be alright
ev'rything's gonna be alright
No woman no cry
No woman no cry
Oh my little sister don't shed no tears
no woman no cry

This song is about dear memories of a lost love. He seems like he's just thinking abotu what he had and what he misses. If you've ever been taken away from what you love, you'll know how it feels. Its the most loving memories that can hurt the most.

i think that an obvious theme of this song is no women no cry. however i think the more important and awesome message comes in the ev'rything's gonna be allright part. this line is why this song is one of my favorites. bob marley is my idol.

i think its about life in Trenchtown, Jamaica.. the ghetto of kingston... i think its about only having love in this horrible place but everythings going to be alright as long as you live for now and stay true and try not to worry about government issues and bullshit that doesnt matter as much after your life is over
but hey, i could be wrong

To me this song really sums up the bob mood. I pretty much love every song by bob, but the line, "ev'rythings gonna be alright" totally captures what i feel when i listen to any bob track. When things aren't always going right, these words remind me that life will go on, they remind me to take a step back and look at the problem is context. One love

This is my favorite Marley song. I agree with Xsaves.the.dayX...i think it's about living for now and not worrying about the past. What's happened has happened...and as much as you wish you could..you can't go back and change it. Just look to the future..."ev'rything's gonna be all right..."

it's just about how you can think back on what happened and it's good to, but you can't let things that went wrong bother you, it's about being happy without a woman ( possibly a lost loved one), like my friend nick, when he lost BOP, he went along just fine without her, now he doesn't even miss her, cuz he's got a boyfriend... little booties himself, bobby honaker

For a long time I thought Bob was saying that if you don't have a woman you have nothing to be sad about (no woman = no cry), but after reading the lyrics its obvious that he is talking to his girlfriend (or another girl) who is crying and he is telling her not to cry, and telling her to forget the past, and he reminds her of the good memories, and the fact that everything's gonna be alright. This song is great.

I think this song is a message for all the mothers in his old hometown Trenchtown. We all know how bad it must be to have and raise children there. Bob Marley came from there to becomming a legend, he knows what life there is like. The song is about being strong no matter what ,as an example for the children. And "no woman no cry, because everything is gonna be all right.

Bob is probably the most influential singer of his time. All his music had a positive message, and I'm glad to see people still relating to it.

when reading his lyrics, its sometimes harder to figure out what he means. thats cos of where he lived, he had no education, or very little. so the lyrics arnt quite as straight forward as other songwriters. thats what make sit all the better, he managed to get where he got from where he was. Peace Rasta's :)

This song is all about roots. I did my senior college thesis on Bob Marley and his political influence on the world and did some research into this song. And according to Bob, this song is about remembering where he is from after the fame and touring ignite the reggae boom around the world. He doesn't let that take away from sitting around the fire in Trenchtown with his old pals (Georgie) and never becoming too big for his roots. It's about being away from his home while he is touring and returning to his wife Rita and the rest of his family. It is about friendships and bonding. Bob tells a story in one of his books (I forget which one off hand) where he returns to Jamaica from his first big tour across America and takes out his acoustic guitar while him and some friends were sitting around a fire. He starts playing No Woman No Cry for the first time and his best friend Georgie broke down and started crying knowing how special Bob was and how much that song meant. Very powerful song indeed, and Bob was definitely a loyal friend, husband and familyman.

Isn't "when we used to sit in the government yard in Trenchtown" about protests? I always thought it was about how things are tough but they'd have these all night protest things and even though it was tough "everything is gonna be all right" so she (presumably Rita) didn't need to cry. This is one of the most beautiful songs in the world.

The government yard that Bob is talking about in the song is the house where he and his mum and siblings used to live in which used to be the property of the jamaican government. the song is not about having no woman and not being sad. it's more of an uplifting pep talk. its talking at a time where the political situation was unstable and is saying that time and environment has changed and corrupetd many things in jamaica but friends and family always stay whatever happens to the country or other people.

Jim Morrison up there was right, we have no control over life itself, but only our own fate. Not even a nuke can stop time, because someone out there will live on to tell stories of redemption and freedom.
