Lyrics for Rapture as interpreted by kittenfactor

Rapture Lyrics
This is how we multiply
Pity that it's not my wife
The friction and skin
The trembling sigh

This is how our bodies move
With everything that we could lose
Pushing us deeper still
The sheets and the sweat
The seed and the spill
The bitter pill yet undiscovered

Gideon is in the drawer
Clothes scattered on the floor
She's arching her back
She screams for more

Oh, my sweet rapture
I hear Jesus calling me home

Finally the chance to breathe
Reaching for the fallen sheets
Collapsing in a glowing heap
We've gone too far
We've done too much
We have to quit it
Just one more kiss
Just one more touch
Please ten more minutes

This feels so good
Just barely moving
The tension building
Our bodies working
To reach the goal

Oh, my sweet rapture
I hear Jesus and the angels singing
Hallelujah
Calling me to enter the promise land

this song is utterly incredibly. i am in love with David Bazaan's whole concept of the new album. All the infidelity and capitalism analogies are genius. I dont know if hes talking about love or money. Its absolutley brilliant!

hmmphh... I haven't heard any of the new album, but I somewhat enjoyed the lack of sex involved in the last ones. Maybe I'm just misinterpreting, but I'm pretty sure this is about sex, and it's somewhat disapointing from a Christian artist "Pity that its not my wife"...

yeah, replaceable, it's talking about sex, but he's drawing analogies, and telling a story... not necessarily condoning the actions of the characters in the story. although i think that some of it could have been less graphic. personal preference.

this song is brilliant. to "replaceable"....i am a christian and i see nothing wrong with this. we all deal with problems, but he is one of the only artists out there to actually "come out" with the problems....but anyways, i love the use of the word rapture. it just shows that god is always watching his actions. amazing. one of my favorite songs

Use of the word "rapture" is obviously talking about sexual ecstasy and at the same time tying it into the christian concept.

it is important to keep in mind, as "designed" mentioned, that bazan is telling a story. i think any of us christians would agree that sex is a wonderful thing, with the right person. that is why the song is so amazing and tragic - the character uses beautiful language to describe an intimate moment, but it is unfortunately not with his wife. bazan strikes again - "winners" and "control" give me goosebumps every time.

David Bazan has had some pretty s****y experiences in life. Music is an outlet to vent those things a person regrets and I think this song, though unacceptable in a traditional Christian mind, is the epitomy of emotion. I like that it pushes the envelope and I like that Christians don't know what to say about him. He's so talented and I think the song gives an awesome testimony... "pity that it's not my wife" Obvious satire... anyways, go Pedro!

bravo, "fading." again, i think it's important to remember it's a story and not something directly from bazan's life, but your point is exactly right. too many christians criticize music and literature that desribes things that aren't "good," even though they are explorations of real life. plus, the use of sarcasm or satire is often unfortunately lost.

I just read a review for the new album... I guess it kinda clarified everything, I still think this song crosses a line... I guess it's just too descriptive for me! heh:) anyways, yah sorry about that! I guess I didn't exactly know his reasonings:)

Specifically to "Replaceable" above ...

Why does Pedro the Lion have to jump through Christian hoops? What lines are they crossing and who drew those lines? Why does his opinion matter only if he's a Christian and why should he care what any of us think? He's a human, making art for his own reasons ... God forbid he write songs about sex, or that have "bad words" in them (insert sarcasm here). Who the hell cares ... I KNOW God doesn't care about all this petty, "Is he a Christian or not ... Is he condoning pre-marital sex" crap. He's got bigger fish to fry.

Let Pedro make their honest, open, brilliant music, and support them in it. Quit trying to force them into boxes people make for them.

I think the line "replaceable" was mentioning has nothing to do with Christian hoops. He/she was probably talking about those boundaries God set up for us in the Bible (you should check it out, Bazan wrote a song about those boundaries given to "save you from certain death" in the song "Of Minor Prophets and Their Prostitute Wives." My question to you is, why can't a Christian (say, me or "replaceable") be concerned about another Christian, which Bazan is by his own declaration. and God DOES care whether we condone certain immoralities, otherwise he wouldn't have set up the boundaries in the first place. i personally think the album is brilliant, but there's no reason for anyone to think he is condoning the practices sung about in his songs... the album was created to show this world's sicknesses. at least that's what Bazan is saying in interviews.
at any rate, i didn't write this to tear you down, just thought i'd clear the air between you and old "replaceable" and protect Pedro's good name.

I don't believe in God and I whole-heartedly disagree with religion (two VERY seperate reasons behind that), but I do know David Bazan is an amazing songwriter. The people here who are offended by this song need to open their minds up and see this song, and this album for that matter, as one deep, disturbing, utterly beautiful piece of work.

This song is obviously about a cheating husband. “Pity that its not my wife”. How sad is that line? Bazan’s use of tounge-and-cheek language is great. This song seems to parallel the passion of sex with that of the rapture. The use of Biblical imagery is only rivaled by the depiction of sex.
The passion that is in the sexual episode is only hightened by the music. “The tension building… our bodies working… to reach their goal…” From the “fallen sheets” to the “sweat” to the “seed and the spill” the imagery is so intense. I am sure there are plenty of Christians out there that would crap in their pants at this imagery, especially with the comparison to the rapture.
The climax of sex and the rapture seem like such a fitting comparison for the husband who is cheating on his wife with Gideon’s Bible in the draw next to the bed. Bazan is obviously saying that there is something wrong with this picture. But this is the society we live in. People look forward to spilling their seed and “one more kiss” than they do to the rapture. Bazan is not implying that anything is wrong with sex, but “pity that it is not my wife”.

i read an interview on decapolis.com and he talks about rapture. it is about how deprived the character is of god and how he thinks that cheating on his wife is as good as it gets and it is his rapture. it makes a point about how starved of god most people are.
by the way this is not a pesonal story david almost always writes in fictional characetrs.

This song is hot. Everything he does makes you think. He is so blunt about it all.

"We've gone too far
We've done too much
We have to quit it
Just one more kiss
Just one more touch
Please 10 more minutes"
I know...

No one should get mad at him, he doesn't do this to his wife. Its just a charactor he has created in his head which happens to be alot of people out in the world.

"We've gone too far
We've done too much
We have to quit it
Just one more kiss
Just one more touch
Please 10 more minutes "
Right here the guy knows what hes doing is wrong but he is weak and cant stay faithfull to his wife.

"To Reach their goal. . .

Oh my sweet rapture
I hear Jesus and the angels singing
Hallelujah
Calling me to enter the promise land."

The man in this story things its so great that hes cheating on his wife because he calls her his rapture, which can mean overwhelming joy or extacy. I think that point represents the orgasim at which he feels like he is in heaven at that moment.

All you Christians quiet, you're obviously not understanding that he's not condoning the actions, "pity thats not my wife" theres sarcasm in that. I think its about having impure thoughts and the angels calling him back are calling him back because he has gone astray. I hate Christian music, but Im willing to listen to his message because its real and comes from real problems, the problem with Christians (those which have problems with this song) is that they are too scared of the truth behind adultery to accept music which reflects a problem even with Christian musicians, lust.

it seems the line "to reach our goal....." is meant to be a bit sarcastic...as if to point out that nothing good can really be accomplished by an extra-marital relationship

"Gideon is in the drawer" refers to the Bible placed in the night stand drawer of most hotel rooms by the Gideons.
