So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
Put on my raving shoes and I boarded a plane
Touched down in the land where the skies were blue
In the middle of the pouring rain
Everybody was happy, energy shining down on me
Yeah, I've got a first-class ticket, been as good as a boy can be
I'm raving, I'm raving
I'm raving til' the sweat drops fall down off me
I'm raving, I'm raving
But do I really feel the way I feel?
Yeah
Come on
Yeah
Put on my raving shoes and I boarded a plane
Touched down in the land where the skies were blue
In the middle of the pouring rain
Everybody was happy, energy shining down on me
Yeah, I've got a first class ticket, been as good as a boy can be
I'm raving, I'm raving
I'm raving til' the sweat drops fall down off me
I'm raving, I'm raving
But do I really feel the way I feel?
Yeah, come on, wicked, wicked, wicked
Give it up now, give it up now, give it up now
Yeah
I'm raving, I'm raving
I'm raving til' the sweat drops fall down off me
I'm raving, I'm raving
But do I really feel the way I feel?
But do I really feel the way I feel?

This is a cover of Mark Cohn's minor 1991 hit "Walking in Memphis".
Mark Cohn had a "spiritual awakening" when he went to Memphis, the home of Carl Perkins, and all the other blues and country musicians that influenced the creation of rock&roll. But does he really feel that way, or he so overwhelmed that he's not sure what he's feeling?
Scooter has a "spiritual awakening" every time they dance like maniacs with thousands of other sweaty people. But do they really feel that way, or is it just that pill they took on the way in?
I never liked the original song when it came out, but after hearing Scooter's take on it… well, I definitely appreciate the catchiness of Cohn's piano riff, but I still think his song was pretentious, soppy, and silly. I'd rather be silly on purpose and rave til the sweat drops fall down off me. HP and the boys made a much better use of his riff.
Compare the lyrics to the original:
Put on my blue suede shoes / Put on my raving shoes And I boarded the plane / And I boarded a plane Touched down in the land / Touched down in the land Of the Delta Blues / Where the sky's so blue In the middle of the pouring rain / In the middle of the pouring rain W.C. Handy / Everybody was happy Won't you look down over me / Energy shining down on me Yeah, I got a first class ticket / Yeah, I've got a first-class ticket But I'm as blue as a boy can be / Been as good as a boy can be
Then I'm walking in Memphis / I'm raving, I'm raving Walking with my feet ten feet off of Beale / I'm raving til' the sweat drops fall down off me Walking in Memphis / I'm raving, I'm raving But do I really feel the way I feel? / But do I really feel the way I feel?
