Hey now, all you sinners
Put your lights on, put your lights on
Hey now, all you lovers
Put your lights on, put your lights on

Hey now, all you killers
Put your lights on, put your lights on
Hey now, all you children
Leave your lights on, you better leave your lights on

Cause there's a monster living under my bed
Whispering in my ear
There's an angel, with a hand on my head
She say I've got nothing to fear

There's a darkness deep in my soul
I still got a purpose to serve
So let your light shine, into my hole
God, don't let me lose my nerve
Lose my nerve

Hey now, hey now, hey now, hey now
Wo oh hey now, hey now, hey now, hey now

Hey now, all you sinners
Put your lights on, put your lights on
Hey now, all you children
Leave your lights on, you better leave your lights on

Because there's a monster living under my bed
Whispering in my ear
There's an angel, with a hand on my head
She say I've got nothing to fear
She say La ill aha ill allah
We all shine like stars
La ill aha ill allah
We all shine like stars
Then we fade away

General Comment:This is from an interview he had with 'E Online'.

"Put Your Lights On was probably one of the most personal songs I wrote. It was written right after I had a major heart surgery, came really close to dying and was just coming out of that whole state of mind of realizing that I was gonna live. That's where the whole 'Put Your Lights on' thing comes in. It's just kind of about hope, but coming from a really dark place. and really questioning a lot of your beliefs. It came straight from the soul. It's really deep to me."

General Comment:I don't think this is about a specific killer.
I think this is about someone who's being tempted by the darkness of his soul, and of what he's done. Whether that's addiction, violence, whatever. That the "monster" is tempting him to keep the darkness in his soul, and to not go towards the light and such.
"Cause there's a monster living under my bed
    Whispering in my ear"

The angel is trying to tell him there's nothing to fear from the darkness or the monster tempting him,
"There's an angel, with a hand on my head
She say I've got nothing to fear"
that he can go toward the light.

"There's a darkness living deep in my soul
I still got a purpose to serve" - He's being tempted by the darkness and trying to resist it.

"So let your light shine, deep into my home
God, don't let me lose my nerve
Lose my nerve" He's trying to move toward the light, but it's hard to, the darkness is tempting him and he doesn't want to turn back to that.
He also asks everyone to "put their lights on", symbolizing redemption, regardless of whatever darkness they have.

General Comment:I'm perplexed that so many people beside DannyDew seem to be missing what to me is the obvious meaning of this song (and I know I could be completely wrong, it's happened many times before!) But look guys, this guy (the narrator of the song) is a killer. This is not about getting touchy feely or overcoming his dark side, this song is a warning to all the sinners of the world that he, the Avenging Angel of Death, is about to take care of them. He's warning us all to keep our lights on because he's coming after us, and he's going to do it in the name of Allah. If he's getitng in touch with anything, it's the darkness that's in his soul that has consumed him but listening to the voices in his head that are telling him he still has a purpose to serve - to cleanse the earth of it's sin by killing the sinners in it. And he's praying that he doesn't lose to fulfill his "holy purposes". It's his Jihad. This song is NOT about "shining your light", although the song brilliantly twists the meaning of this, it is a WARNING to PUT YOUR LIGHTS ON!

General Comment:I think Lori kinda got it. The more I listen to it, the more it seems to be talking about the things inside we're afraid or ashamed of. We all have to put the lights on inside us and look at who we are and see if this is how we really want to live and be. Religion tells us that we have nothing to fear because God (or whoever you pray to) will be there for us, but regardless it's so tough and scary to look at who we really are. Children are already innocent from sin in this song, so they leave their lights on, everyone else can't help but sin, we need to turn our lights on and repent for who we are, put light on the monster inside each of us.
-Under his bed has the imagery of a place that rarely sees light, the monster/ sins in us, don't get thought about cause we don't like to think about it.
-Everlast must have been thinking about how it took a near-death experience to really see how we need to look at our life, so why now write a song to tell everyone body about it.
-"hey now" we need to take responsibility and repent for our sins instead of ignoring and hiding the light from them.

General Comment:Its about him having a dark side, something that a lot of people might think bad about. But hes saying we all have them so why try to hide? Nobody's perfect and show who you really are.

General Comment:See this is the gift of music ...I agree with all of you , yet dis-agree for me ...see with events in my life ...I see this as the struggle between good and evil as well ...to me it speaks of a warning ...of a personal nature ...a former soldier and Merc ...to listen eases those moments when someone strays too close to that " darkness" hidden deep in my soul

    * the Angel tells me I am protected
    * the monster tells me to unleash the carnage again

Leaving the lights on beats back the monster as any child knows ... in the song the singer prays for strength to " not loose his nerve " to me this means not to forget who he really is and asks for the streangth to continue to keep these forces in balance and thus in check ...course Im nutz so what the hades do I know !?

General Comment:The song doesn't end with "whooo-ahha hey la la" - it ends with "La ilaha illa Allah," which is much more representative of the nature of the song and Everlast. He had just come out of recovering from a heart attack, and had converted to Islam - hence "La ilaha illa Allah," the first part of the Kalima Shahadah, Islam's declaration of belief in the oneness of God. The Shahadah's daily recitation is one of the five pillars of Islam. Clearly, this is a very spiritual song for Everlast, and it shows in the lyrics.

General Comment:This, I see, is a struggle between all the narrator finds to be good and evil. He is in his dying hour, and is being told by different beings whether or not he will make it into heaven. You have the monster whispering that he belongs to him, and the angel who soothes him with reassuring words. In the end, the speaker is left to give a message to all future generations, to warn them not to end in limbo like the speaker has.

General Comment:this was written after the lead singer for everlast had some sort of rare heart attack. its about not knowing if you're going to live tomorrow and for everyone to put your lights on to see what is really going on. The children are the only pure ones.
