If I needed someone to love
You're the one that I'd be thinking of
If I needed someone

If I had some more time to spend
Then I guess I'd be with you my friend
If I needed someone
Had you come some other day
Then it might not have been like this
But you see now I'm too much in love

Carve your number on my wall
And maybe you will get a call from me
If I needed someone
Ah, ah, ah, ah

If I had some more time to spend
Then I guess I'd be with you my friend
If I needed someone
Had you come some other day
Then it might not have been like this
But you see now I'm too much in love

Carve your number on my wall
And maybe you will get a call from me
If I needed someone
Ah, ah

General Comment:George was a big fan of the 12-string jangling sound
of the Byrds, and was a friend of David Crosby -
this song is a Beatles take on that sound and the
vocals match the Byrdsound - the lyrics do not
amount to much, simply becuz they didn't have to-
sort of like when the Beatles in "Back In The USSR"
    were imitating the Beach Boys

General Comment:don't flame me, but what i get from this is close to what JO5EPH said, putting on a facade or a false "yeah IF i needed someone it would be you" when inside its more of a "i DO need someone" i dunno why but thats what i get from it. the one line: "had you come another day then i might not have been like this but you see now i'm in to much love." almost sounds like he's saying if i hadnt met you when i did how i did i might not feel the same but because i did i'm all kinds of in love. but its being played down so he doesnt sound desperate....or, OR it really is a booty call :/ i dunno but thats what i get from it.

General Comment:As I see it, the song is about a guy who likes someone but doesn't seem willing to fully embrace that feeling. The guy really DOES need someone, but he doesn't want to admit it, so he feels the need to play it up like he doesn't. Hope that makes sense. Awesome song either way.

General Comment:The Beatles wrote such beautiful melodies and sang such gorgeous harmonies for lyrics often written about silly things. And don't misinterpret what I mean by silly. They were often silliest (and joyful) when writing about adult topics and most serious when writing about childhood or children.

General Comment:..actually the background harmonies are both paul and john - paul does the high and john the low harmonies - as was typical in help and rubber soul...

General Comment:The songs sounds to me like a person who's already in a serious relationship being approached by another woman. George is replying that if this new gal had come by sooner, things might have been different.

BTW, I love the harmonics between George and John. They should've done more vocals together.

General Comment:Plain and simple...singer is in a relationship, but is telling 'another girl' that, if he wasn't currently involved, she'd be 'the one.' Fairly common conundrum, for guys anyhoo.

General Comment:can someone explain to me what this would have to do with a drug dealer?
This song does kind of seem like its about a booty call, although I'd like to suggest another possible meaning that I think people tend not to think of right away: fidelity.
It doesnt seem plausible at first because he keeps saying "If I needed someone" (implying that he doesnt need someone), but perhaps the reason that he doesnt need someone is that he already has someone and doesnt need anything more. I think this is possibly addressed to a woman who is trying to lure him into an affair, and he is telling her that if he were to be unfaithful it would be with her, but he's perfectly happy in the relationship he already has. This would explain the line "Had you come another day then it might not have been like this, but you see now I'm too much in love"--that is, he may have become involved with this woman if he was single, but he's too in love with his present sweetie to think of anyone else
