I'm the Scatman

Yo da dub dub
Ski-bi dibby dib yo da dub dub
Yo da dub dub

Be bop ba bodda bope
Bop ba bodda
Ba-da-ba-da-ba-be bop ba bodda bope
Bop ba bodda bope
Be bop ba bodda bope
Bop ba bodda bope

Everybody stutters one way or the other
So check out my message to you
As a matter of fact, a-don't let nothin' hold you back
If the Scatman can do it, so can you

Everybody's sayin' that the Scatman stutters
But doesn't ever stutter when he sings
But what you don't know, I'm gonna tell you right now
That the stutter and the scat is the same thing
Yo, I'm the Scatman
Where's the Scatman?
I'm the Scatman

Why should we be pleasin' any politician heathens
Who would try to change the seasons if they could?
The state of the condition insults my intuition
And it only makes me crazy and a heart like wood

Everybody stutters one way or the other
So check out my message to you
As a matter of fact, don't let nothin' hold you back
If the Scatman can do it, brother, so can you
I'm the Scatman

Ba-da-ba-da-ba-be bop bop bodda bope
Bop ba bodda bope
Be bop ba bodda bope
Bop ba bodda
Ba-da-ba-da-ba-be bop ba bodda bope
Bop ba bodda bope
Be bop ba bodda bope
Bop ba bodda bope

Ski-bi dibby dib yo da dub dub
Yo da dub dub
Ski-bi dibby dib yo da dub dub
Yo da dub dub
Ski-bi dibby dib yo da dub dub
Yo da dub dub
Ski-bi dibby dib yo da dub dub
Yo da dub dub

Everybody stutters one way or the other
So check out my message to you
As a matter of fact, a-don't let nothin' hold you back
If the Scatman can do it, so can you

I hear you all ask 'bout the meaning of scat
Well, I'm the professor, and all I can tell you is
While you're still sleepin', the saints are still weepin' 'cause
Things you call dead haven't yet had the chance to be born
I'm the Scatman

Ba-da-ba-da-ba-be bop bop bodda bope
Bop ba bodda bope
Be bop ba bodda bope
Bop ba bodda
Ba-da-ba-da-ba-be bop ba bodda bope
Bop ba bodda bope
Be bop ba bodda bope
Bop ba bodda bope

Ski-bi dibby dib yo da dub dub
Yo da dub dub
Ski-bi dibby dib yo da dub dub
Yo da dub dub
Ski-bi dibby dib yo da dub dub
Yo da dub dub
Ski-bi dibby dib yo da dub dub
(Yo da dub dub) yeah, I'm the Scatman

Where's the Scatman?

I'm the Scatman, repeat after me
It's a scoobie oobie doobie, scoobie doobie melody
I'm the Scatman, sing along with me
It's a scoobie oobie doobie, scoobie doobie melody

Yeah, I'm the Scatman (I'm the Scatman)

among the craziness of the scatting, there are some well written lyrics in there.

Why should we be pleasin' all the politician heathens Who would try to change the seasons if the could? The state of the condition insults my intuitions And it only makes me crazy and my heart like wood

He isnt impressed with the state of the world, and the people who run it. Gotta wonder how he'd like the world these days...

While you're still sleepin' the saints are still weepin' cause Things you call dead haven't yet had the chance to be born

    Another good lyric.

Just a fun and meaningful song.

Wow. Scatman was a stutterer but he turned it into scatting. He said his greatest weakness became his greatest asset. That explains so much about his song, literally. The scat and the stutter are the same. As a matter of fact, don't let nothing hold you back; if the Scatman can do it, so can you.

And a little more vague: While you're sleeping the Angels are still weeping because things you call dead haven't had the chance yet to be born. I think he didn't believe he'd ever have a singing career. He declared it dead from the start. But then he made scatting, and before that he hadn't even let his singing career have a chance to be born.

Everybody treating this song like it’s all innocent and ”fun”... very few people know the true meaning. Look at the lines:

Ba-da-ba-da-ba-be bop bop bodda bope Bop ba bodda bope Be bop ba bodda bope Bop ba bodda Ba-da-ba-da-ba-be bop ba bodda bope Bop ba bodda bope Be bop ba bodda bope Bop ba bodda bope

Does that remind you of something? No? If I say Morse, does it ring a bell?

Using standard Morse code, this supposed ”gibberish” turns into:

Eat scat Devil Ready Yes Yummy scat Devil Ready Evil

Not so innocent any more, is it?

Yeah this song was in BASEketball when Remer turns in to a star. If you haven't seen that movie you really need too. It is very funny.

The song is basically about how he'd had a history of stuttering, but had a talent for "scatting." With that said, he ended up making a name for himself doing so.

Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988. "'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it." "There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,

Just A Little Lovin'
Dusty Springfield
I don't think it's necessarily about sex. It's about wanting to start the day with some love and affection. Maybe a warm cuddle. I'm not alone in interpreting it that way! For example: "'Just a Little Lovin’ is a timeless country song originally recorded by Eddy Arnold in 1954. The song, written by Eddie Miller and Jimmy Campbell, explores the delicate nuances of love and showcases Arnold’s emotive vocals. It delves into the universal theme of love and how even the smallest gesture of affection can have a profound impact on our lives." https://oldtimemusic.com/the-meaning-behind-the-song-just-a-little-lovin-by-eddy-arnold/

Amazing
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.
