He came dancing across the water
With his galleons and guns
Looking for the new world
In that palace in the sun.

On the shore lay Montezuma
With his coca leaves and pearls
In his halls he often wondered
With the secrets of the worlds.

And his subjects
gathered 'round him
Like the leaves around a tree
In their clothes of many colors
For the angry gods to see.

And the women all were beautiful
And the men stood
straight and strong
They offered life in sacrifice
So that others could go on.

Hate was just a legend
And war was never known
The people worked together
And they lifted many stones.

They carried them
to the flatlands
And they died along the way
But they built up
with their bare hands
What we still can't do today.

And I know she's living there
And she loves me to this day
I still can't remember when
Or how I lost my way.

He came dancing across the water
Cortez, Cortez
What a killer.

Song Meaning:Love the sounds, have to go with .- Joe, from Baltimore, when he says, “Neil is saying he is Cortez, and in a deeper sense, all of us are."

Montezuma showered the Spaniards with gifts and generously offered them complete access to the city, including his own palace. He had many women as his mistresses, the daughters of chieftains, and two legitimate wives. Some say the last leader of the Aztec’s gave gold calendars to Cortez. Some say Cortez melted them to lumps of metal for the Spanish queen.

Moctezuma became a prisoner in his own house until he was killed. When he was stoned by his own people, and later stabbed to death, “Cortés and his captains and soldiers wept.”

General Comment:the built to spill version is way better in my opinion. excellent song. what i think is that neil young met a hottie down in central america who told him this story of cortez from the perspective of the natives. and he wrote a song about it, which would explain the part about a girl

General Comment:This song is completely ahistorical, so don't read it as such. "Hate was just a legend, war was never known" is complete BS if your looking at this from a historical perspective. The Aztecs were an empire that subjugated other peoples and captured the youth of neighboring tribes so they could be sacrificed instead of their own children. Moreover, the real killer wasn't Cortez but small pox.

As far as Neil's song goes it's very well done, but it can't be read as history.

General Comment:Anyway here is my interpertation of the song....please feel free to comment:

He came dancing across the water
    With his galleons and guns
    Looking for the new world
In that palace in the sun.

    On the shore lay Montezuma
With his coca leaves and pearls
In his halls he often wondered
With the secrets of the worlds.

    And his subjects
    gathered 'round him
Like the leaves around a tree
In their clothes of many colors
For the angry gods to see.

And the women all were beautiful
    And the men stood
    straight and strong
    They offered life in sacrifice
So that others could go on. - Many cultures had human sacrifice to appease the "Gods"

    Hate was just a legend
And war was never known - Just his romantic notion
    The people worked together
    And they lifted many stones.

    They carried them
    to the flatlands
And they died along the way
    But they built up
    with their bare hands
What we still can't do today. - They still dont really know how a basic people built the pyramids

And I know she's living there - Cocaine
And she loves me to this day - Cocaine will always love him
    I still can't remember when
Or how I lost my way. - He doesnt know how and when it took a hold of him.

He came dancing across the water
    Cortez, Cortez
    What a killer.
As I said this is just my idea of what the song is about....Neil Young, Neil Young...What a singer....

General Comment:After reading all your comments...I went and listened to all the covers, Dave Matthews Etc. I am sorry but the original is simply and undoubtedly the best. I think that all the covers try to out do the original but thats why they have covered it, because it is just simply an amazing piece of song writing!!! My advice to Dave Matthews etc your good....just not that good!! lol

General Comment:great song... but the lyrics are awfully far from the facts. the aztec empire, and yes they did practice imperialism, was horribly violent, built upon the war neil claims they didn't know. if you think about it even a little, this kind of 'noble savage' shit is really racist.

General Comment:Great song, interesting fact about Hernan Cortes (it is spelled with an S) he was such an psycho that when he feared mutiny in the midst of colonial war he burned his own ships (or sank them, its still not clear) so his men would have no way of deserting him. He reminds me of the character Kurtz from Heart of Darkness (or colonel Kurtz from Apocalypse Now, an adaptation from the book)

General Comment:This song is absolute and udder genius. If I were a chick, I'd get wet the first tim Neil say's "he came dancing across the water"

But for real, this song is a tribute (historically inaccurate) of the colonization of Central America

However I do love that verse

And I know she's living there
And she loves me to this day
    I still can't remember when
Or how I lost my way.

Sounds like neil broke some chicks heart, but i think some1
