The screen door slams, Mary's dress sways
Like a vision she dances across the porch
As the radio plays
Roy Orbison singing for the lonely
Hey that's me and I want you only
Don't turn me home again, I just can't face myself alone again
Don't run back inside, darling you know just what I'm here for
So you're scared and you're thinking
That maybe we ain't that young anymore
Show a little faith, there's magic in the night
You ain't a beauty, but hey you're alright
Oh and that's alright with me

You can hide `neath your covers and study your pain
Make crosses from your lovers, throw roses in the rain
Waste your summer praying in vain
For a saviour to rise from these streets
Well now I'm no hero, that's understood
All the redemption I can offer, girl, is beneath this dirty hood
With a chance to make it good somehow
Hey what else can we do now?
Except roll down the window and let the wind blow back your hair
Well the night's busting open
This two lanes will take us anywhere
We got one last chance to make it real
To trade in these wings on some wheels
Climb in back - Heaven's waiting on down the tracks
Oh-oh come take my hand
Riding out tonight to case the promised land
Oh-oh Thunder Road, oh Thunder Road, oh Thunder Road,
Lying out there like a killer in the sun
Hey I know it's late we can make it if we run
Oh Thunder Road, sit tight take hold, Thunder Road

Well I got this guitar and I learned how to make it talk
And my car's out back if you're ready to take that long walk
From your front porch to my front seat
The door's open but the ride it ain't free
And I know you're lonely and there's words that I ain't spoken
But tonight we'll be free, all the promises'll be broken
There were ghosts in the eyes of all the boys you sent away
They haunt this dusty beach road
In the skeleton frames of burned out Chevrolets
They scream your name at night in the street
Your graduation gown lies in rags at their feet
And in the lonely cool before dawn you hear their engines roaring on
But when you get to the porch they're gone
On the wind, so Mary climb in
It's a town full of losers and I'm pulling out of here to win.

General Comment:Was also at Wembley on Saturday and this show-ender was spellbinding on a truly epic scale (and the end of a stunning gig).

I think "Hey I know it's late we can make it if we run"

    and

" The door's open but the ride it ain't free"

gives Thunder Road an absolutely delicious ambiguity - yeah we can go for our dreams, even now, but only if you are ready to pay the price, even now - so what were you prepared to do?

General Comment:No great observations from me. Just wanted to say I think this is the greatest song ever written. I was lucky enough to be at Wembley on Saturday where Bruce closed his amazing set with a solo accoustic version of this (I've only ever seen him perform it with the band before).

In my opinion "my car's out back if you're ready to take that long walk from your front porch to my front seat" is the most wonderful line. Genius. I often wonder how much he thought about the word 'long' - perfection.

General Comment:I think this song is from the point of view of someone witnessing an old woman (Mary). They knew mary when she was younger, like when she graduated. When she was that young, she was beautiful, and she had the opportunity to do anything she wanted. Now, the song talks about how her beauty has faded, and she has made a living for herself. She had a good life

General Comment:Just an FYI for fans of Bruce and Thunder Road. There is a band called The Gaslight Anthem, also from Jersey, a very good young rock band who cite Bruce as inspiration.

On their album Handwritten there is a song called Howl, which is definately the story(at least in their opinion) of what happened when Mary got back from college. Check it out, might make you a fan of The Gaslight Anthem

General Comment:I recently watched Bruce's "Storytellers" DVD from 2005. He plays and explains 8 songs...Blinded by the Light...(a good example of why I never took drugs), The Rising, Devils and Dust...etc. . Intimate setting, just him (except with Patti on "Brilliant Disguise") acoustic, harmonica and piano. He says of the line: "You're scared and you're thinking we ain't that young anymore:...this was written in 1974, 2 yrs after the Vietnam War. NO ONE was ever that young anymore after that". Man, he hits so many head of thousand nails with almost every lyric, every bit of poetry he writes. He is so very insightful it's almost unbelievable.

General Comment:"You aint a beauty, but hey you're alright" is one of the best lines ever written in my opinion.
It's about really loving someone regardless of everything, just pure love. She isn't the best- he isn't either, but she's the best to him (even not if it isn;t in the looks department).

This song holds so many happy memories to me.

Song Meaning:As a product of the gasoline generation and as I find myself at 50+, I flash back on all Ive heard seen and done. pumped out pony cars to my favorite Norton 750... at the end of the line there is this place.... that's my Thunder Road.... Finding your self older; not the young stud you used to be; one last high speed run to the end with the woman that knew you then...Not exactly suicide... just going with the flow of life's seasons...

General Comment:The greatest song from the greatest album ever. I finally have this song memorized word for word.

It's the great escape (NOT THE MOVIE) and starting over far away from what haunts you every day.
