Now that she's back in the atmosphere
With drops of Jupiter in her hair, hey, hey
She acts like summer and walks like rain
Reminds me that there's time to change, hey, hey
Since the return from her stay on the moon
She listens like spring and she talks like June, hey, hey

Tell me did you sail across the sun
Did you make it to the Milky Way to see the lights all faded
And that heaven is overrated

Tell me, did you fall from a shooting star
One without a permanent scar
And did you miss me while you were looking for yourself out there

Now that she's back from that soul vacation
Tracing her way through the constellation, hey, hey
She checks out Mozart while she does tae-bo
Reminds me that there's room to grow, hey, hey

Now that she's back in the atmosphere
I'm afraid that she might think of me as plain ol' Jane
Told a story about a man who is too afraid to fly so he never did land

Tell me did the wind sweep you off your feet
Did you finally get the chance to dance along the light of day
And head back to the milky way
And tell me, did Venus blow your mind
Was it everything you wanted to find
And did you miss me while you were looking for yourself out there

Can you imagine no love, pride, deep-fried chicken
Your best friend always sticking up for you even when I know you're wrong
Can you imagine no first dance, freeze dried romance five-hour phone
Conversation
The best soy latte that you ever had, and me

Tell me did the wind sweep you off your feet
Did you finally get the chance to dance along the light of day
And head back toward the Milky Way

And are you lonely looking for yourself out there?

Tell me did you sail across the sun
Did you make it to the milky way to see the lights all faded
And that heaven is overrated

Tell me, did you fall from a shooting star
One without a permanent scar
And did you miss me while you were looking for yourself out there

My Interpretation:Now that I know that the song is about the writer's mom who died of cancer, the line:

    One without a permanent scar

makes more sense. The first time I heard that line I thought he was referring to an angel -- a person with no belly button.

General Comment:You all make interesting and valid sense of the lyrics, but you're missing the most important part: the last line of the actual song that is not written in the lyrics above. The closing line is, "but are you lonely looking for yourself out there?" She hasn't returned. The song is mostly a conversation that the narrator is IMAGINING having with his still wandering lover...

General Comment:to me, the song is about a girl who went off to make it big, to be among the stars if you will. the song is from a friend's perspective. well things didnt work out to well on her way to the top. she had her 15 minutes of fame and went right back to where she started, now her friend is all like 'so is it what you thought it would be, no fried-chicken, none of the good stuff, but hey, you got to taste fame, right?'. i can really see this when the song says
"tell me, did you fall from a shooting star
    one without a permanent scar"
well she fell from fame and it didnt last as long as she thought it would. when she came back, she still had a bit of that hollywood in her, and she wasnt like how she used to be, and her love didnt seem to fit in her picture anymore either.....and well, thats just my interpretation of it

My Interpretation:I know what this song is really about. But when I first heard it, it was one that really struck a nerve because of what I was going through. I don't necessarily think it's one that is "about me", but it fit the situation. This is my interpretation... I believe this song could be a love story very easily. A woman leaves town to be with her significant other. Leaving everything she knows, including a guy friend who warned her about the other guy who he was friends with, so he knew the guy pretty well, and she just overlooked what he was telling her because she was in denial, and believed she could "change" him. She returns back to town after the relationship ends. She really did love the guy though, it was one of those that feels like it sticks with you for months, even years. Where you can't be with anybody else because you see that other person's face. She smiles and laughs and tries to be happy again, but the certain sparkle is gone from her eyes because of a broken heart. Her guy friend who has always secretly been in love with her waits for her to get better. His love goes beyond looks because he would do anything for her. But he can't help but get a little mad when she runs to him for comfort because he warned her about the other guy and so he's jealous. So he's being sarcastic when he asks her if she thought love was everything it was cracked up to be. He's afraid he's going to be put in the friend zone again, so he's doing everything to get his chance with her. But she has to find herself again, and learn to love herself. It's harder for him to stand by and wait, because he's afraid another man is going to sweep her off her feet. And he knows he's the one for her, and she's too blind to see it because "he's just a friend". Sadly in this song, it really doesn't have a happy ending, but it's just a vicious cycle. I also like to think it has a lot of astrological/zodiac references in it. Lots of symbolism. I love it!

General Comment:Oh mum.... Where are you? Well, where did you go? Do you miss me as much as I miss you? (Which is a lot)

I didn't like or appreciate the song when it came out but the lyrics are ABSOLUTELY.... (Crying) beautiful

My Interpretation:I know this song is truly about his mother and losing her to cancer, but I also see it as a form of self discovery as a woman. I went through this stage in my life, and this song very much describes how I feel and how my ex lover might view my self discovery. Even down to the line "Did Venus blow your mind, was it everything you wanted to find?" I can interpret as, being bisexual, experimentation with the opposite sex but never being able to explore it due to being in a relationship.

General Comment:"Drops of Jupiter" by Train, is my favorite song of all time. This song brought me into a lot of self reflection in the Summer of 2000. This song, and what I was going through at the time, changed my entire outlook on life and love. I've watched Pat's video on the song's inspiration, so I know that the lyrics were written in different context than the way in which I relate to them, but that’s a strong allure of music. Different people will get different things from a song.

For me, Drops of Jupiter’s lyrics are a metaphor for the process I went through in learning what is precious in life and love, and in learning the difference between what’s just sparkly, and what’s real. I spent a lot of time out of the atmosphere, falling for shooting stars, looking for myself... but in the end, all of the things that I thought would be heaven, were overrated. I didn’t find happiness in the Milky Way, or in the constellations, or in any of the things that had looked so inviting. I realized that the happiness I wanted was in the first dance, the five hour phone conversation, the best soy latte, and in my best friend – all the things that had been right in front of me all along.

My Interpretation:This is a very sad song once you try to interpret the meaning of the lyrics. This song is about a girl who left him because he wasn't what she wanted, but she came back deciding to be his friend again. I think it could also be about a girl who went into coma or moved away but she recently came back into town. At the same time I think it could also be about a friend that decided she was too good to hang out with him so she left him for the "popular crowd."

"Now that she's back in the atmosphere
With drops of Jupiter in her hair, hey, hey
She acts like summer and walks like rain
Reminds me that there's time to change, hey, hey
Since the return from her stay on the moon
She listens like spring and she talks like June, hey, hey"

Since her return, he realizes that she is much different than how he remembers her as being. She's changed for the better. If this is indeed about a friend leaving him, he realizes that while hanging out with these other friends she has changed a lot.

"Tell me did you sail across the sun
Did you make it to the Milky Way to see the lights all faded
    And that heaven is overrated"

He wants to know if she enjoyed her time away from him, if she found everything she was looking for. He also wants to know if she realized that what she thought she wanted wasn't as great as she imagined it to be. Heaven (what she thought she wanted) wasn't as great as she had thought. If this is about a friend is wants to know if she realized that the popular crowd or the people he left him for aren't as great as she expected.

"Tell me, did you fall from a shooting star
    One without a permanent scar
And did you miss me while you were looking for yourself out there"

He is asking her if she fell in love with someone else that's better than him, that doesn't have as many problems and can give her what she was looking for...At the same time he wonders if she missed him while she was gone and that's why she has come back.

"Now that she's back from that soul vacation
Tracing her way through the constellation, hey, hey
She checks out Mozart while she does tae-bo
Reminds me that there's room to grow, hey, hey"

This again is saying how much she has changed since the last time he saw her. He realizes that her time away from him has done good things for her.

"Now that she's back in the atmosphere
I'm afraid that she might think of me as plain ol' Jane
Told a story about a man who is too afraid to fly so he never did land"

He's afraid that now that she has changed she will think of him as too boring for her. He wonders if she told people while she was gone about how boring he was. If this is about a friend, this part is talking about how she probably sees him as boring now that she has spent time with "better" people.

"Can you imagine no love, pride, deep-fried chicken
Your best friend always sticking up for you even when I know you're wrong
Can you imagine no first dance, freeze dried romance five-hour phone
    Conversation
The best soy latte that you ever had, and me"

He wants to know where she would be now without love, her pride, and all the memories they shared (maybe they went to a restaurant and got deep-fried chicken, him always sticking up for her even if she wasn't doing the right thing, their first dance and long phone calls, going to the coffee shop) and without him.

General Comment:This song is a poetic masterpiece - the lyrics are so simple; yet so beautiful. I don't think there is any song that quites reaches the level of beauty and emotion that this song possesses. It has a special place in my heart.
