All last summer in case you don't recall
I was your and you were mine forget it all
Is there a line that I could write
Sad enough to make you cry
All the lines you wrote to me were lies
The months roll past the love that you struck dead
Did you love me? Only in my head.
Things you said and did to me
Seemed to some so easily
The love I thought I'd won you give for free

Whispers at the bus stop
I heard about nights out in the school yard
I found out about you

Rumours follow everywhere you go
And when you left I was last to know
You're famous now and there's no doubt
In all the places you hang out
They know your name and know what you're about

Whispers at the bus stop
I heard about nights out in the school yard
I found out about you
I found out about you

Street lights blink on through the car window
I get the time too often on AM radio
You know it's all I think about
I write your name drive past your house
Your boyfriend's over I watch your lights go out

Whispers at the bus stop
I heard about nights out in the school yard
I found out about you

"His then-girlfriend had left him, left him with a black eye. She had cheated on him and sucker-punched his face in the lobby of a downtown venue after an REM show. Those lines 'I write your name/Drive past your house/Your boyfriend's over/I watch the lights go out'... he lived that. You could read his depression as clearly as his words. He was wrecked by drink and heartbreak. Big dark circles under his eyes. His parents had intervened; got him help. But it didn't help much.

He strummed carefully on a Gibson electric that wasn't plugged in because the pawn shop had his amp. Lyrics were neatly arranged chicken scratches on the back of a crumpled show flier.

He stopped. "This won't make any sense without the bassline." So he plucked out the bass part. "The droning fifth on the pre-chorus will make the singer sound like God," he said. He stopped again because he was so proud of the "AM radio" reference in the lyric. He repeated it."

My Interpretation:To me, this song couldn't be more relevant right now. To me it's about getting played by someone and thinking that you meant as much to them as they meant to you, but turning out completely wrong in the end. About people getting what they want, and then pretending that you never existed...
The guy who I think about when I listen to this song thinks that everything people say about him is false. "Rumors follow everywhere you go"...but I know that I should've listened to those "rumors", but now it's too late for me to go back. And this all took place this past summer, and now it's gone...
I love this song a lot though...lots and lots.... :) very underrated.

My Interpretation:this song is about a guy who fell for 'party girl' (to put it lightly) one summer. he probably 'loved' her b/c the sex was so good. eventually, she found a new party, and the guy was left permanantly scarred. you know how this goes. doesn't matter how bad a girl might hurt you, the obsession (and perhaps compulsion) will carry on for sometime.

General Comment:WELL I REALLLLYYY THINK THIS SONG IS BEAUTIFUL! I CANT STOP LISTENING TO IT...I THINK ITS THIS GUY WHO IS SO IN LOVE WITH THIS GIRL AND HOW HE THOUGHT HE WAS LUCKY AND REALLY EARNED THIS GIRLS LOVE BUT IN REALITY SHE GIVES IT OUT TO ANYONE SHE WONTS WHETHER THEY DESERVE IT OR NOT..ITS QUITE SAD...SO SHE MOVES ON AND HE KINDA GETS LEFT IN THE DUST WONDERING WHAT THE HECK HAPPENED CUZ EVERYONE ELSE KNEW IT WOULD END. THEN EVERYONE KNOWS WHAT SHE IS ABOUT AND HER BEING A WHORE AND HE LOVES HER ANYWAYS AND BECOMES OBSESSED DRIVIN BY HER HOUSE AND WRITING HER NAME WISHIN THIS HADNT HAPPENED AND BASICALLY FIND OUT ABOUT HER CHEATING AND CANT SEEM TO STOP LOVING THIS GIRL.

General Comment:Essentially he was in love with this girl, but she breaks it off. Later, he's still in love with her, but he starts hearing about what a slut she is and how she slept around on him. But he still can't help his feelings for her. So now he's HEARTBROKE, CHEATED ON, DUMPED and in love with a SLUT. Sad thing is, this story hits a little to close to home for me...

General Comment:Sounds like he fell for a girl. Got to caring about her. Then found out too late that she was a slut and he was making a fool of himself. "u can't make a whore a house wife"

General Comment:This has got to be my #2 fav song of all time (behind savage garden, of course.) -- i think it's about cheating - he obviously was in love with her, she didnt feel the same, and found another guy without telling him. it's really sad, knowing that he's dead now. :( Gin blossoms will never be the same.
