I can't quit you baby
So I'm gonna put you down for awhile.
I said I can't quit you baby
I guess I gotta put you down for awhile.
Said you messed up my happy home
Made me mistreat my only child.
Yessir you did!

Said you know I love you baby
My love for you I could never hide.
Oh you know I love you baby
My love for you I could never hide.
Oh when I feel you near me little girl
I know you are my one desire.

When you hear me moaning and groaning, baby,
You know it hurts me deep down inside.
When you hear me moaning and groaning, baby,
You know it hurts me deep down inside.
Oh, when you hear me, honey, baby,
You know you're my one desire.
Yes, you are.

My Interpretation:I think it's definitely about drug/alcohol addiction and trying to quit. (Alcohol moreso I think) "I gotta put you down for awhile" could be referring to putting down the bottle. "Made me mistreat my only child" I think is referring to the narrator getting drunk and beating his kid. "When you hear me moaning and groaning, baby.... you know you're my one desire" is probably saying that the narrator is drinking his sorrows away.

General Comment:This song is about heroin. PERIOD. Plant was obviously addicted to it... No matter what the original writer intended it to be about.. Plant was singing about his addiction to heroin... I feel like it's common sense..

General Comment:I agree Thrognordle. Gollum often exhibits highly feminine traits and, although the character is casually referred to as "he", it is never categorically stated in the text that Gollum is male.
Look at the back story. Almost all of Gollum's life has been spent under yoke of dominant females. First the matriarchy of his grandmother then the years of slavery to the spider bitch Shelob. When Gollum uses the word "We" he is clearly speaking to both himself and the female half of his split personality, Smeagol.

"When ya hear me moanin' and groanin', baby
You know it hurts me deep down inside"

This isn't Smeagollum groaning at Frodo and his Elvish sword in the throes of a passionate embrace.
He knows nothing of the sins of the flesh. The closest he ever gets is when he f*cks himself in the Crack of Doom.

General Comment:This song is about LOTR. It illustrates the strong push-pull bond between Frodo and Gollum and recounts how Frodo turns his back "his only child" Smeagol in the wake of Gollum's split personality tantrums.
Much has been said about the thinly veiled homo-erotic nature of the trilogy and this symbolism is at the forefront of the Smeagol-Frodo-Gollum triangular tension. It's a good job Sam was there is all I can say.

General Comment:The lyrics for this song should be:
    I-hi, I can't quit you, babe
So I'm gonna put you down for a while
    I said, I can't quit you babe
I guess I got to put you down for a while
Said you messed-up my happy home
Made me mistreat my only child
    Yes, you did, babe, oh

Said, you know I love you, baby
My love for you I could never hide
Oh, you know I love you, babe
My love for you I could never hide
A-when I feel you near me, little girl
I know you are my one desire, whoa-oh, oh-oh, yeah

    Oh, that's wonderful, whoa
    Whoa
    Alright, oh, now, that's wonderful

When ya hear me moanin' and groanin', baby
You know it hurts me deep down inside
Oh, when ya hear me moanin' and groanin', babe
Y-you know it hurts me deep down inside
Oh, a-when you hear me holler, baby
You know you're my one desire, yes, you are, alright

Ain't that just like a man...blaming his abuse on the woman.

Glad to learn R. Plant didn't write the song...ty maximus.

General Comment:I agree with Bob. It seems to be about drug addiction. I played this last weekend at a blues festival, with that meaning in mind, and it certainly allows for a great depth of feeling when playing. Plant added his own lines about 19 year old chicks etc, but that was just ad-libbing, I reckon. Along with Dazed and Confused, it's my favourite Zep track. I like all versions. The studio version is simply the best blues guitar I've ever heard, while the live stuff is like watching heavy metal being born. It just doesn't get any better! Jimmy Page took the guitar into the abstract, and in my opinion is the supreme guitar innovator of all time.
