A very old friend came by today 'cause he was telling everyone in town About the love that he just found And marie's the name of his latest flame He talked and talked and I heard him say That she had the longest blackest hair The prettiest green eyes anywhere And marie's the name of his latest flame Though I smiled the tears inside were a-burning I wished him luck and then he said goodbye He was gone but still his words kept returning What else was there for me to do but cry Would you believe that yesterday This girl was in my arms and swore to me She'd be mine eternally And marie's the name of his latest flame

Song Meaning:His friend is telling Elvis about a girl he has fallen in love with. It isn't said whether or not he has told her or acted on his feelings but later lines make it seem to lean towards he hasn't... yet. So when Elvis realizes that this woman is a/the woman who actually already loves him. This also insinuates that they've been longtime friends so its less likely but still not impossible the girl only liked Elvis for being famous. Elvis cries for 1 or 2 of 2 reasons.
Because he feels terrible for his friend and the heartache thats ahead for him. Because he knows when his friend realizes who the girl actually has fallen for, it will effect their friendship to say the least.

And remember girls! Don't mess with the emotions of a dangerous lunatic! :-)

Was brought up on Elvis, so I know loads of his songs but not many of the titles, I know once I hear it though

General Comment:I'm 24, and I've always loved Elvis. So not all young people are idiots. :/

This song is so amazing - it's got such a great reveal. I love that it isn't explained why he's crying first. Man. What a fantastic song. Definitely in my top 5 favorites (though his rendition of How Great Thou Art is pretty freaking amazing).

General Comment:...you mean Vanilla Ice didn't write that song?

...just kidding. Definitely my favorite Elvis song. Overrated. And I love the Smiths' Live medley, too. Although not even Morrissey can touch the King.

General Comment:This songs amazing!!!!!!! I agree with BlueOatmeal, most young people nowadays wouldnt know a good song if it jumped up and bit them in the bum. A simple song with simple lyrics, ephilbrook basically nailed the meaning. But nobody comes out with a song like this anymore.

General Comment:It's because most (under 20) on this site think Queen ripped off Vanilla Ice.

This is an uptempo blues song about a friend who is telling this guy about this great girl he has found, and guess what? It's his girl, she's obviuosly a slut, and all he can do is sit there and listen...pure hell.
