Lyrics for Hots On For Nowhere as interpreted by kevin

Hots On For Nowhere Lyrics
I was burned in the heat of the moment,
Though it couldn't have been the heat of the day
When I learned how my time had been wasted,
(And a) tear fell as I turned away

Now I've got friends who will give me their shoulder,
Event I should happen to fall
Time and his bride growing older
I've got friends who will give me fuck all

(On the) corner of Bleeker and nowhere
In the land of not quite day
A shiver runs down my backbone
Face in the mirror turns grey

So (I) looked round to hitch up the reindeer
Searching hard trying to brighten the day
I turned around to look for the snowman
To my surprise he'd melted away.

As the moon and the stars call the order
Inside my tides dance the ebb and sway
The sun in my soul's sinking lower
While the hope in my hands turns to clay
I don't ask that my field's full of clover
I don't moan at opportunity's door
And if you ask my advice, take it slower
Then your story'd be your finest reward.

Lost on the path to attainment
Search in the eyes of the wise
When I bled from the heart of the matter
I started bleeding without a disguise

Now everything's fine under heaven
Now and then you've got to take time to pause
When you're down on the ground, don't be messin' around
Or you'll land in a boat without oars
Hey babe, Hey babe, Hey babe,
I lost my way.

Hey babe, Hey babe,
I don't know where I'm gonna find it.

Hey babe, Hey babe,
Do you wanna know,
Do you really, really, wanna help me, yeah?

Let me tell you now, babe
Let me tell you
That it feels so good that it must be right

Now my babe,
Let me tell you
That it feels so good that it must be right...

this is probably the best song off the album, minus achilles last stand. ive listened to this song many times, and i really enjoy it. i think its about seeing something you want, and not always being able to get it.

This song is AMAZING! It's the pauses in the song which make the most noise...

This is my favorite Led Zeppelin song. It is about trying to reach something and failing, but having friends that will keep you going.

elbazimo's right...silence can be very powerful when used correctly. i think this song is really great, and agree that is one of the best on Presence. i like the "na na" stuff, or "la la", or whatever it is. catchy :)

A good song, with a strong funky element to it.

The title sounds really hip, but what does it mean exactly?

This, as with "For Your Life" have references to the abuses of blow (cocaine) and its emptiness ("snowman") etc. He's longing for his friends to keep his direction, in a time when he was in tax exile, living in the island of Jersey. He refers to the friends who aren't quite friends (" friends who will give me fuck all") because they are only there for the excess of attaching themselves to a musical celebrity.

In the middle stanza ("As the moon...") he feels himself sinking into emptiness from the excesses of the band and how directionless he had felt things had become, and advises the listener to stay hard working and healthy ("And if you ask my advice, take it slower...") for the sake of personal success. He's realized how hollow the people and habits involving fame and riches can be, and warns of how he's felt his emotions and inner self sink to oblivion ("The sun in my soul's sinking lower
While the hope in my hands turns to clay")

I can't indict Plant for this being a personal essay; it may have been an affront regarding Page's growing heroin abuse, and related problems.

I never really paid much attention to any of the lyrics on the album "Presence" as it was their weakest studio album. Although I still say it was a masterpiece guitar driven album. Page really worked hard on this one despite his drug addiction he was dealing with at the time. This song is sweet. It's got great rythm.

This songs SO grooves. Yea, stop start stop start, then the riff changes so that its not like that..then the drums fill in. Then when it comes back to the verse, the riff changes ever so slightly. Brilliant

The entire album was recorded while Plant's wife was near death, and Plant was in a full body cast and then a leg cast and doctors weren't even sure if he would be able to walk again.... hence the attitude of these lyrics

It's talking about his wreck (the first stanza) and then how his friends (particualarly Pagey and Grant) didn't visit him and it made him mad. The other stuff is about him being in the middle of nowhere and how he had to hitch a ride to save his and and wife's lives.

If you realize it was about the wreck, it's a very straighforward song so I'm not going to explain it all..

at first look i thought the lyrics on this song were horrible (just the first line had me going... wow.... but actually they're quite good)

As EmporerExkeil alluded, it has to do with the 1975 car accident in Rhodes, when Robert badly broke his leg and his wife Maureen suffered critical injuries. Not to play editor or anything, but Plant's wife was never near death, just critically injured and in the first day or so (until a plane was arranged to fly her back to England) things were sketchy with rural doctors in Greece. Once back in England, Maureen was already recovering, but the recovery would be very lengthy.
The first stanza is meant to show us that the car accident, and his realization of being actually mortal was a crazy concept to grasp. The accident taught him of the fragility of life and the fact that many people around him weren't really his friends but just people seeking personal gain, especially during tours.
The rest of the song illustrates his feelings of getting old and his realization that cocaine doesn't solve everything, as it might've in 1975 and apparently his best connection either was incarcerated or died ("I turned around to look for the snowman, to my surprise he'd melted away.") This, like "For Your Life" were abject tirades against drug abuse (specifically blow) in the prior years (1975 was a big snowy year for, at least, Plant).

Plant had a lot of time to think and ponder, sitting in a wheelchair in California, away from his family and in tax exile. Much of this album was a realization on Plant's part that the previous tour was ridiculously out of control and it was time to grow up and embrace the precarious nature of life for its value and importance. I still firmly believe this period, late 1975, was an important realization and turning point for Plant, and I'd bet he didn't touch a drug after that point.

I could never figure out the lyrics to this track (or any other track on "Presence" for that matter) even though I must have listened to it about 500 times by now. Plant was singing in a wheelchair when this album was recorded, because he'd broken his leg in a car accident in Greece just weeks before. It's hard to sing in a sitting position, and I think that's the main reason his voice just doesn't come through clearly enough... although I suspect copious quantities of coke may have contributed to the problem (but that's just my theory!). NOW that I see the lyrics in front of me... I STILL can't make heads or tails of them! But it doesn't matter anyway, because I LOVE this track for the MUSIC... it's KILLER and Plant's voice is simply another instrument that delivers PURE ENERGY to my soul.

I think this song is about Robert quitting drugs and realizing that they weren't doing any good for him.

I was burned in the heat of the moment,
Though it couldn't have been the heat of the day

-Pretty obvious drug references there. Don't have to go too deep into it to realize that.

When I learned how my time had been wasted,
(And a) tear fell as I turned away

-This was after he realized he didn't like being wasted all the time.

Now I've got friends who will give me their shoulder,
Event I should happen to fall
Time and his bride growing older
I've got friends who will give me fuck all

-He's got friends that will help him if he should fall into drugs again, the last line is hard to tell what it is. I think he says "fuck all" but it's not real audible when hearing it. I've read some lyrics say that he says "before I fall" but it's hard to tell what's said.

(On the) corner of Bleeker and nowhere
In the land of not quite day
A shiver runs down my backbone
Face in the mirror turns grey

So (I) looked round to hitch up the reindeer
Searching hard trying to brighten the day
I turned around to look for the snowman
To my surprise he'd melted away.

-These lines are about drugs. He hasn't had drugs for a while so he feels old Reindeer is whoever gives him the drugs. He was looking for a pick me up. He's trying to brighten up his day, so he went for Cocaine(snowman) but it was gone.

-The first part of this is about him having withdrawls. But in the end he isn't going to moan, He'll take it slow.

Now everything's fine under heaven
Now and then you've got to take time to pause
When you're down on the ground, don't be messin' around
Or you'll land in a boat without oars

-This is basically saying everything is fine now, then he sends a message to someone else(possibly bandmates) that you need to take time to pause and that when you need to quit while you are a head or you'll be in more dire straits.

This is what I got out of this song...Right of the bat The title "hots on for nowhere" suggests that maybe there is a dead-end relationship or crush? You know when you have "the hots" for somebody or vice versa, well I think that's what it may mean. The song "I was burned in the heat of the moment, though it couldn't have been the heat of the day...(all the way to "turned away")" I think that means he just realized he has a dead-end pursuit and learns his time was wasted, his efforts vanquished, and he weeps about it. The 2nd verse seems that he has his friends to talk to or give support since he's down. Time is running out, as he realizes again that he wasted his time (time and his bride growing older). The third verse/stanza sums up lonliness and regret. The 4th shows he tried to cheer himself up (around christmas time?), but was unsucessful. The 5th is fairly understandable until "and if you ask my advice..." I think he's trying to say take relationships slower, and more rationally, then your story (of your love) will be your finest reward. If you're catching on to this theme the rest is almost self-explanatory....THAT'S MY INTERPRETATION. FEEL FREE TO SCRUTINIZE OR PRAISE.

I just noticed that what he really sings "friends that would give me 'fluck aa'". He switched the letters around. It's an anagram.

I wonder he used anagrams in other songs. That might explain "high hell hailla ball" or whatever that is.
