Then as it was, then again it will be
An' though the course may change sometimes
Rivers always reach the sea
Blind stars of fortune, each have several rays
On the wings of maybe, down in birds of prey
Kind of makes me feel sometimes, didn't have to grow
But as the eagle leaves the nest, it's got so far to go

Changes fill my time, baby, that's alright with me
In the midst I think of you, and how it used to be

Did you ever really need somebody, And really need 'em bad
Did you ever really want somebody, The best love you ever had
Do you ever remember me, baby, did it feel so good
'Cause it was just the first time, And you knew you would

Through the eyes an' I sparkle, Senses growing keen
Taste your love along the way, See your feathers preen
Kind of makes makes me feel sometimes, Didn't have to grow
We are eagles of one nest, The nest is in our soul

Vixen in my dreams, with great surprise to me
Never thought I'd see your face the way it used to be
Oh darlin', oh darlin'

I'm never gonna leave you. I never gonna leave
Holdin' on, ten years gone
Ten years gone, holdin' on, ten years gone

Song Meaning:This song has a very interesting background. The facts are somewhat confusing so it is best to start at the beginning, 10 years before. Robert was in love with the exotic Shirley Wilson in the mid-1960s but she did not like his rock and roll lifestyle so they had to split up. He later dated, then married, her sister Maureen, whom he had three children with. They divorced amicably in 1983 and are still good friends. Later, he ended up back together with the inspiration of this song, his love Shirley. She gave birth to his last child, Jesse in 1991 but eventually they went separate ways.

General Comment:Up until now I had just loved this song because of Robert Plant's vocals and the sweet guitar in the background, but these lyrics are amazing. I never caught them all (got-some-made-the-rest-up kind of thing) but after reading them it only makes me love this song even more.
I'm only sixteen and really can't relate to the song or anyone in the comments but it's amazing to hear everyone's stories. From what I've read it seems most of you have have found that lost love

My Opinion:wow, this is one of those songs I never caught all the lyrics to, but just liked its overall sound and vocal style. But this changed for me yesterday.

    I'll explain.....

30 years ago I met and fell in love with an amazing woman. my bad habits and overall insecurity caused us to part company 20 years ago. No calls, letters, casual or indirect contact for a complete 20 years. But I remained deeply in love with her. 2 failed extended engagements/relationships later I was basically still a bachelor when I managed to contact her thru facebook. Turns out we were both single and I took her out for dinner. We have been almost inseparable for 6 months now.

Yesterday, this song came on the radio and I caught a few lyrics. So I looked them up....

"then as it was, then again it will be".

I read the whole thing and was stunned, thinking how closely one persons experiences and emotions can compare to your own is uplifiting to say the least. (I got chills)

In Plant's situation he probably made a good descision choosing his music over his love. Im my case I made some bad descisions, and its a life changing experience to get a second chance.

This song will remain very special to me until I pass on from this world, and maybe longer.

Oh yes, and the music is just as amazing as the lyrics.

My Opinion:i almost think this song should be pure acapella. plants voice is almost too good for jimmy pages playing to back it up, well at least in this song.

General Comment:Amazing song. How could any woman resist Robert Plant with lines like this?

Kind of makes makes me feel sometimes, Didn't have to grow
We are eagles of one nest, The nest is in our soul

    Wow.

General Comment:Been raised on Zeppelin since I was a young'n, from my dad's old cassette tapes.

This is my favorite song by them - the guitar solo is just so smooth, the melody is absolutely beautiful. The lyrics are heart-wrenching as well. I love Led Zeppelin. This reminds me of a cool, autumn day where the leaves are falling.

General Comment:At a concert in Landover back in '77, Plant introduced this song like this:

"If you've ever had an affair with a member of the opposite sex, or even a member of the same sex; if this affair seemed very casual to you at one time, and then you walked away, and as the years go by, it was a lot more than it seemed. then you've felt... you've felt a feeling of lost love. and this is a song about that, it's called 'Ten Years Gone'"

So yeah, that's what it's about. When he said the bit about the same sex back then, it made me realize that the lyrics don't mention gender at all. So it works for anyone who's ever had a lost love.
