Lyrics for Houses Of The Holy as interpreted by kevin

Houses Of The Holy Lyrics
Let me take you to the movies. Can I take you to the show
Let me be yours ever truly. Can I make your garden grow

From the houses of the holy, we can watch the white doves go
From the door comes Satan's daughter, and it only goes to show. You know.

There's an angel on my shoulder, In my hand a sword of gold
Let me wander in your garden. And the seeds of love I'll sow. You know.

So the world is spinning faster. Are you dizzy when you're stoned
Let the music be your master. Will you heed the master's call
Oh... Satan and man.

Said there ain't no use in crying. Cause it will only, only drive you mad
Does it hurt to hear them lying? Was this the only world you had? Oh-oh

So let me take you, take you to the movie. Can I take you, baby, to the show.
Why don't you let me be yours ever truly. Can I make your garden grow
You know.

This song strikes me as a little cynical ... a love song talking about the corruption of man by woman. There are some metaphorical references to sexual intercourse ... "the seeds of love I'll sow" ... but the narrator also seems to be condemning his woman at the same time, for being a "child of Satan", or even Satan himself.

Incidentally, the line about letting the "music be your master" is one of the lines that spurred rumours that Zep were trying to intertwine Satanic propaganda with their music. All crap, in my opinion, but ...

Lots of images depicting good vs evil. Plant clearly holds a belief in the spiritual side of the world...either that or he is takin the p***...

It seems to me that it is more against satanism then for it..... if you put the Satan and Man part down with the stanza below it, you get it with "Does it hurt to hear them lying? Was this the only world you had?" which could show man as being corrupted by satan and lying etc.......I dunno just an opinion

Nice observation ledskynyrd, except they named a previous album after this song. Although this song appears on Physical Graffiti (which came out in 1975), it was written while they were writing the album this song takes its name from in 1973. Speculation is that they saved it for later because it sounded too much like "Dancing Days".

mime, this isnt even the dancing days board.....anywho...this song, in my opinion, depicts the way teenagers and other people were inducted and attracted to cults in the 70's. For example, its stated "let me take you to the movies, let me take you to the show". this could be the way that young women were seduced and later introduced to this mans "church". Like, "does it hurt to hear them lying?" could be the way most cult leaders made their participants feel angry at mankind and sorry for themselves. Let the music be your master. Will you heed the master's call
Oh... Satan and man.

This means that you need to accept what you need and want as your master, and it is saying that satan gave you what you needed.

This isnt the band trying to say "hey, satan is cool" or anything like that, I just think it's a portrayal of the way alot of cults acted during this time.

this song isn't as much about good v. evil as everybody thinks. it's really just about a guy trying to get this girl to go with him. and satan's daughter i think just means some girl or something that would tempt him. and all the "can i make your garden grow" type lines i think are just suttle refrences to sex. the music is your master it's just saying follow the beat and do what feels right (at least at the time ;)).

Kinda surprised no one has mentioned the fact that the band called where they played houses of the holy. Anyways, about the "satanic" references about Satan and Man being your master, if you listen to song, there's quite a bit of a pause before Plants says "Oh, Satan and man," so I think they are talking about their music and not necessarily about Satan. Man, this kinda like reading one verse out of the Bible literally without reading the rest of the chapter in context...

the cult idea is a pretty good one considering jimmy page purchased a satanic house in Ireland(im pretty sure) and is said to have practiced black magic in it.

The solo is just like one of those classical rock solos. Page and the band do awesome with the beat. All together, it's an awesome song.

I'm pretty sure this song is satirical commentary directed toward a (younger) woman who is continuously falling for men who only use her for sex (and then dump her). Most of it is sung by the man to the woman. Stanza one (movies) is obvious beginning-of-shallow-relationship stuff. Second stanza (houses of the holy) is advancing the "relationship" to showing off the rock star lifestyle, hanging out at the studio, etc. "Satan's daughter" is an obviously desirable pet name for any groupie. Third stanza is just foreplay. I'm not sure about the "angel on my shoulder," but I'm fairly certain I know what the "sword of gold" in his hand is. Fourth stanza is sex and orgasm. The Satan references there are probably just the connection between sex and the devil. She is dumped between the fourth and fifth stanzas. The fifth and sixth stanzas are still being sung to her, but now from a new man. He sings about understanding her pain... then he offers to take her to the movies. She is about to enter the cycle again.

It's actually a pretty funny song if you look at it this way. You can even hear Plant singing it in a mocking, patronizing tone… like he’s singing to an infant.

THE CALL OF LED ZEPPELIN'S MUSIC
Led Zeppelin's music for me years ago was not something I listened to for entertainment value, it dictated a specific way of life. Sex, drugs, and rock and roll became my religion; the most important thing in my life. My "overlord's" in this religion were the four members of Zeppelin, specifically, Jimmy Page. Zeppelin's music puts one into trances, calling one to follow them through their "music" and their master while one is "dizzy" while "stoned". Zeppelin's music is electronic hypnosis, programming a person with their dark message. They never played this song live in concert.
He is singing this song to the Zeppelin fans, a sinister love letter to the fans, filled with clues as to their real intension and motive behind the music, "Satan and man" united in the houses of the holy through the power and call of the music of Zeppelin. Plant said, "I think that any group can hit you differently when you're stoned. You can listen to a group when you're straight and it feels one way, and you can listen to it while stoned and it becomes more intense. You're able to pick out more of what the group is trying to show you"
