This song is all about how jimmy page was a paper boy (hence the line "They carry news that must get through ") and he's not gettin paid much(They hold no quarter). so he goes through this back ally ("They choose the path where no-one goes." Then he broke into that aleister crowley guy's house. if your really into zeppelin and page and stuff, u kno page bout this dudes' house and that he was big on the occult.

perserverence were taught and discovered great things from the higher powers. therefore they
understood how to do things that were considered miracles. at the time it caused much strife
and division among people as some of them were accused of using forces for evil purposes when
they were not! as time went on it resulted in the church outlawing certain teachings and
practices as heresy! hence..the inquisition!
if suspected of heresy you would be put to death! (burned alive). yet some wanted to share
the knowledge they considered "bright and true" with others searching. so the teachings went
underground, "they choose a path where no one goes" for fear of death. thats why "the devil
mocks their every step". yet still they felt like they "carry news that must get through" to
share with the rest of us, but by doing it their "walking side by side with death."
the song is about members of a family who "wont be home tonight" because earlier that day
they were arrested for teaching or practicing what was considered heresy and were taken
straight to their execution without being held, it was useless to ask and they new it. they
took the chance to share the knowledge "to build a dream for me and you" and died for it.
i think im pretty close to what page and plant had in mind, as they are very knowledgable
concerning quabalah, theology, gnosticism, and other occult truths.

The only reason so many parallels can be drawn between this song and LoTR is because that damn novel steals concepts from everywhere, how else could they extend it so far? author's creativity? NO!

No Quarter in my opinion could be a phrase meaning "No Mercy"
With this you can also relate the word quarter to america's struggle for freedom, the british back then used to require american colonists to provide them with shelter... in keeping with this idea lets relate this to the lyrics

Steel meaning the mithril armour Frodo wears. News could possibly be the ring that has to get to mount doom. The path where no-one goes being when Sam, Frodo and Gollum go across that swampy bit. "No Quarter" means taking no prisoners. It was an old term used on ships during battles at sea. I don't know what relevance it has here, though.

The singer messes up the verses. i dont like the effect of they put on the vioce, the gutiar sound for the solo is total crap, but everything else is ok i geuss.
No one can do a better version of that song. Especially the live one. If any of you have watched it

I beleive, in a freaky kind of way, that Led Zeppelin does worship, or did, worship the devil. Ive heard so many rumors, I have heard there songs backwards, and it all makes sence, and than you watch some of there DVD's and theres a lot of scarey stuff.
I beleive they wroship/ed the devil, as in Greek Myth. there were worshipers of bad god's so the dont rain apone the human race. I think they have worished the devil. I think their music, is litterally unbelievable. They're so perfect. I have seen them play in a concert, and its scarey, I just get glued, and I so amazed. I think the songs are showing two sides.
The front ( forward ) is the God, and Holiness, and the back ( reverse ) is the devil. In a lot of there songs, like Stairway to Heaven, and This one, if you play it in reverse, you can accualyy hear things about the devil, and his powers.
THis song, is about there path, waking side by side with death, the path of the Zoso, the watch dog. The path no one goes, and the nor ask nor recived quarter. I beleive they were famous the toured and the constantly made music to show everyone the power of the devil, and that he is real, but also, to have faith in god and to realize what is really going on.
Now dont think I worship the devil or anything, but for me, all of the peices fit, and I think there songs are more of a blessing than a Satanic Message.

I like to look at song lyrics as a little story, rather than trying to find references to other stories.
"To build a dream for me and you", It's like two or more people, who take a path during winter, to bring love and peace to humanity.
Wearing steel doesn't really fully fit in with the story, though. Unless they're planning on fighting something. And the Dogs of Doom don't quite make sense, either (unless they're a reference to the death that the snow/cold tolls). But when you put the two together, it might hit something.
I used to think "No Quarter" meant Out of Money. Then I saw that it can also mean No Housing. Both of these make sense, they have given up or found no need for these things, because the deed they are about to do is for the greater of humanity, so they are not self-centered at all - and they may even be building such a dream in which society does not need money or material posessions.
Walking side-by-side with death is a figure of speech meaning you're almost dead, or toying with death, but barely hanging on to life. The devil mocks their every step, meaning the devil - or controller of death, mocks them as they barely hang on to life.
"They choose the path where no-one goes". When there's a thick layer of snow on the ground, and it's fairly fresh, you have trouble finding paths or even footprints or signs of other humans. You may even stray from standard paths, or at least feel like you're taking a new one since you see no sign of anyone else having taken it.
The interesting part is the narrator. He's telling someone to "Close the door, put out the light.", because this group won't be coming home, they've abandoned it for the greater good of mankind (question being, how's he know, and who's he telling?).
And then the narrator goes on to say "The pain, the pain without quarter." Like he couldn't imagine what it would be like to have no housing/money (signifying his greed, for he is simply another member of society); he may just be about to find out with the dream that is about to come.
Persue your happeness however you may find it.
This song is eerie, and that's what makes me like it so much.

anyway, i think in the first few lines:
("Close the door, put out the light.
You know they won't be home tonight..." ) refer to the people that are waiting for the fellowship to return: arwen in imladris and frodo's friends in the shire.
the rest of the song probably refers to aragorn's passage through the paths of the dead. the dogs of doom are the wargs, though, as far as i remember, they feature a lot earilier in the book. the part about the devil obviously refers to sauron. although, sauron never really makes his grand appearance, he's omnipresent throughout the book.
all in all, it's a really cool song. definitely shows plant's song writing abilities. he can really give waters and gilmour a run for their money! ^_^

To my mind it has always been essentially the song of those people who are left behind in wartime; waiting for their loved ones to return. That is the only explanation I've heard where all the lyrics make sense.
No Quarter - I agree that it is meant in the sense of no mercy.
I love this song. I won't say that any of you are wrong in your interpretations of it but it doesn't feel like a LOTR influenced song; definitely more Norse mythology.
I think the album was called No Quarter because Jimmy would have no mercy in reworking their old stuff even if people wanted to hear them only playing exact replicas of the studio versions.
