No quarter is a song about a brave army who stand up for god in order to conquer the devil. The army won't spare anyone and does not expect to be spared. They are will to fight to the death for what they believe in.

They fight for god, their beliefs and the woman and children who cannot fight.

wat a brilliant song... this shows people how important JPJ was to Led Zeppelin.. he wasnt just another guy he is one of the most underrated musicians in the entire world zeppelin wouldnt have been zeppelin with out him he was a huge piece and is not given near the credit he deserves and that was because he was quiet or more quiet than page plant and bonzo..AND i think this is a perfect example of the mysticism surrounding LED ZEPPELIN ..i think it perfectly sums it up ..they rarely did interviews because the gay ass music reviewers didnt like their louder sound even though it was phenomenal and detested them for some stupid reason.. so they did most of their talking through their albums and live shows and thats more than enough when led zeppelin are who they are the greatest rock band in history.. this song really has mysticism in it its quite spooky and i love it!!

I hate how people think Tolkien was original and try to attribute so many things as having been influenced by him. Tolkien took a TON of inspiration from Norse mythology. And by a TON i mean he got the majority of his LOTR universe from it.

That said, Zeppelin took a lot of inspiration from Norse mythology as well, so it's no surprise that you'd see similarities crop up from time to time.

amazing song, a masterpiece. its a fun song to cover [as i do in the band i am in], because it very complex, but still very flowing. very progressive, and i am going to just say it: the most beautiful thing ever recorded.

ANYWAY, AS FOR THE MEANING...

the literal meaning seems to be there, but why? why write a song about vikings?

well, aside from the fact that it makes for intense lyrics, and vikings were cool, i would think that there would have to be some personal meaning to it. possibly comparing the experience of the vikings described to something in their personal lives? (they being plant/page...whoever has the writing credits)

Ok here's the thing.....many people tend to draw connections between LoTR and Zeppelin songs. Some people dispute it and say that it had to do with Norse or Celtic mythology. The truth is connections can be drawn with both. It is quite obvious that Tolkien himself drew inspiration from these mythologies while writing LoTR so therefore sayin that it is about LoTR is not all that far off. Being a die-hard LoTR fan myself i can see these connections and it is fine to draw them. People should be open minded about this as i'm sure Plant & Page were while writing these amazing songs. They can mean many different things to many different people it is as simple as that. The connections are there throughout.....Norse......Celtic.....and in that respect LoTR. When it comes down to it it is all up to our interpretation...the listener and thank God for that. AND THANK GOD FOR LED ZEPPELIN!!!

its about norse myths, and thor is the god of thunder not the equavellent of satan so no u dont know eant u talking about.
this song is really scary to listen 2 at night. i was litening 2 this song at night once i just started looking around and stuff

What an amazing song. Honestly. I enjoy tool's version of 'No Quarter' also. Once I was on my early morning walk with my iPod when i was at boarding school, and I tripped out and imagined a whole video clip to this song over the 10 or so minutes it was playing for.

"no quarter" also means "no mercy" or "no clemency". regardless of what story it's based upon. the song is about courage and perseverance in the face of great hardship.

I dont know much about the mening of this song, and to tell you the truth I like it that way. The first time I heard this song, I was very stoned, and it blew my mind! I have it on vynil and listening to it while stoned is like eating dessert before dinner if you are a 5 year old (it kicks ass). Even if the song had no lyrics, the trippy guitar and overall rythem of the music is emaculate. Good job Zepp

No matter right or wrong regarding the commnets you guys made, you gotta admin, this song is friggin awesome! I first listened to this song as a kid growing up in Los Angeles, parked in my car up in the hills overlooking the city. The snowy, cold mountains behind me, the expansive lights of the huge city below me. This song made me feel like I could fly! Now here it is almost 40 years later and when I listen to the song, I get goosebumps from the memories. Definately Zep's best work.

Jonsey began writing it shortly after his father died, giving it the "dark" quality. The band began working on it as a whole during the III sessions, so the norse stuff checks out, it is highly improbable that it's about LOTR, as nothing else on III is. A VAST majority of Zep's songs are NOT about LOTR, whether you like it or not.

In my opinion, this song has nothing to do with the Lord of the Rings. All I know is, that the "no quarter" was an old pirate phrase, meaning no mercy. And this song is truley dark, I loooove it!

This song is probably my favorite song I have ever heard, and yes I am sorry to say that the Tool version does touch me alittle more, but it owes itself to the original anyway, so two thumbs WAY UP for The Mighty Led.

And yes this does all seem to point to LotR, yet mabey we are focusing on the wrong part of LotR, I always thought they were refering to the Mines of Moria (The Path No one goes). The Dogs of Doom (Wargs), the devil (Balrog) mokes their every step...they carry news that must get through (to Rivendell), and the snow is pretty obvius.

corrente (first page) is totally right about this song. Zeppelin bases a few songs on Norse Mythos (take the Immigrant Song for example).

Anyhoo, I like this song a lot, really a bit of a different angle then you normally get from them, but I have to say, Tool's cover of this was amazing. I love the sound and the feeling they add to it. I think few bands can successfully create an equal or better version of a Zeppelin song, and I definitely think they pulled it off ^_^
