Lyrics for Going To California as interpreted by kevin

Going To California Lyrics
Spent my days with a woman unkind, Smoked my stuff and drank all my wine.
Made up my mind to make a new start, Going To California with an aching in my heart.
Someone told me there's a girl out there with love in her eyes and flowers in her hair.
Took my chances on a big jet plane, never let them tell you that they're all the same.
The sea was red and the sky was grey, wondered how tomorrow could ever follow today.
The mountains and the canyons started to tremble and shake
as the children of the sun began to awake.

Seems that the wrath of the Gods
Got a punch on the nose and it started to flow;
I think I might be sinking.
Throw me a line if I reach it in time
I'll meet you up there where the path
Runs straight and high.

To find a queen without a king,
They say she plays guitar and cries and sings... la la la
Ride a white mare in the footsteps of dawn
Tryin' to find a woman who's never, never, never been born.
Standing on a hill in my mountain of dreams,
Telling myself it's not as hard, hard, hard as it seems.

scooter along with most of you have no clue about led zeppelin if you can't even get this songs lyrics down. This song is just like all of led zepelins good songs....touching and special.......this song is about California ...the drugs, wine, and women that make it so great.

i think the song may be about california, but there are also some connections to the lord of the rings series. yes, i too have the dvd, and this performance, along with all their others are amazing. i wonder, has anyone seen their older movie, the song remains the same? some cool "dream" clips in that.

I can definitely see the Samwise/ Gladriel references, espcially in the line "Standing on a hill in my mountain of dreams, Telling myself it's not as hard, hard, hard as it seems", reffering to how he knows he has to climb Mt. Doom before the story ends and he goes back to his home. But, like all Led Zepp songs with references to the Lord of the Rings, it's only a metaphor, I'd imagine, for what he's going through in real life.

Whatever the meaning, this is my favorite Zeppelin song.

No its not about lord of the rings! Open up your lil elf ears and listen to the song!!! are you guess freakin serious!! ITs about goin to california... shit read the damn lyrics, But either way it shows how little creativity (lyrics wise) that the band had. Overrated out of their asses, I actaully enjoy listening to the white stripes(similar voice) just as much as zeppelin, but thats just me.

this song is about women. not about lotr, not about traveling, really.
he's with a woman, she uses him, and now he's going to california to try and forget her and find someone new. he doesnt want to believe that he will never find someone who treats him right (i.e. "ever let them tell you that they're all the same").

its not about lotr, its about a woman. In the live version on How the West was Won, he metions a girl named Jolee, right after "she cries and she sings". I dont know if thats the girl hes leaving or what but there you go

i agree with hippieatheat, that is the meaning i also am a huge joni mitchell and zeppelin fan, and Joni was a huge inspiration to robert plant and he ended up writing it for her after he had met her for the fisrt time.

If you have seen this on the DVD set, you will know how happy that they are playing this song. I love the smile that's passsed between Jimmy and Robert right after he says, Try to find a woman who's never never been born." Priceless

Saying these lyrics are in any way descriptive of LOTR is like saying they are descriptive of a toilet bowl. Now, don't get me wrong, I love LOTR, but my point is that you can stretch and abuse lyrics as much as you want to make them seemingly fit your warped perception.

...and I'm not saying that is negative, art means different things to different people, it's how you perceive it and how it moves you. If LOTR moves you more than a lovelorn guy headin to California in search of his dream-girl, then more power to you, for me, I like the love story.

Richard Cole, in his book, said that Page had a crush on Joni Mitchell. The song is about her. That's it.

the song is a tribute to joni mitchell. saw it done live by plant back in 2002 opening for Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend (i refuse to call them the who seeing how half of them have passed on)
As for Cole's book: Richard Cole is a fucking moron. His book is full of his bullshit stories of how important he thinks he was to the band.

as much as we would all love to unravel robert and jimmy's words...it will never be done, you all can sit here and say what you think its about but all youre going to be able to do it pick out little pieces here and there but youll never be able to string it all together.

they are amazing. the fathers of rock. they didnt need to go to california for anything, they had it all in their voices and in their guitars picks and drum sticks.
