There's a lady who's sure
All that glitters is gold
And she's buying a stairway to heaven.
When she gets there she knows
If the stores are all closed
With a word she can get what she came for.
Ooh ooh and she's buying a stairway to heaven.
There's a sign on the wall
But she wants to be sure
'Cause you know sometimes words have two meanings.
In a tree by the brook
There's a songbird who sings,
Sometimes all of our thoughts are misgiven.
Ooh, it makes me wonder,
Ooh, it makes me wonder.
There's a feeling I get
When I look to the west,
And my spirit is crying for leaving.
In my thoughts I have seen
Rings of smoke through the trees,
And the voices of those who standing looking.
Ooh, it makes me wonder,
Ooh, it really makes me wonder.
And it's whispered that soon, If we all call the tune
Then the piper will lead us to reason.
And a new day will dawn
For those who stand long
And the forests will echo with laughter.
If there's a bustle in your hedgerow,
Don't be alarmed now,
It's just a spring clean for the May queen.
Yes, there are two paths you can go by
But in the long run
There's still time to change the road you're on.
And it makes me wonder.
Your head is humming and it won't go
In case you don't know,
The piper's calling you to join him,
Dear lady, can you hear the wind blow,
And did you know
Your stairway lies on the whispering wind.
And as we wind on down the road
Our shadows taller than our soul.
There walks a lady we all know
Who shines white light and wants to show
How ev'rything still turns to gold.
And if you listen very hard
The tune will come to you at last.
When all are one and one is all
To be a rock and not to roll.
And she's buying a stairway to heaven.
All that glitters is gold
And she's buying a stairway to heaven.
When she gets there she knows
If the stores are all closed

The tune will come to you at last. and other .. but i think that song hasn't any meaning this song is just about people who love money and doing everything to get it
when i first started to read the WORD OF GOD ,I was told that a cetain passage may be interp. diff. each time you read them or you may interp. your own way of HEARING GODS MESSAGE OR WORD TO YOU,
IT IS COOL THAT A SONG CAN BE BROKEN INTO SO MANY MEANINGS AS LONG AS WE KEEP IT SIMPLE ,NOT JUMPING TO PAUL'S DEAD KINDA CRAP!!!

This is a protests song guys. Against the recording industry mostly. Page created STH from a mishmash of musical bits that he strung together into a number too long for a 45 single - a finger to the recording industry's mandate that all hits go out the door as singles, then again as LPs. STH went straight to LP.
STH increases in tempo - rarely known to survive customer preference - another finger. Plant's own explanation of (one of) the lyrics was that it "was some cynical aside about a woman getting everything she wanted all the time without giving back any thought or consideration."
The words were written to fit the music and to give Plant something to do, which helps explain why they don't make a lot of sense. According to Wiki, "the lyrics of the song reflected Plant's current reading. The singer had been poring over the works of the British antiquarian Lewis Spence, and later cited Spence's Magic Arts in Celtic Britain as one of the sources for the lyrics to the song." Google Lewis Spence if you want to know where their heads were, which is Druids dancing naked around bonfires in the forest, and Secret Rites and Traditions of the Ancients.
I like another person's interpretation of the 'lady' as the Catholic church and buying penance, burning women as witches etc, but I cannot find any of that in Plant's or Page's words.
It just struck me how well the song seems to fit in with the Church scenario that I laid out.
A great song will have a meaning for all people. Picking the song apart makes it feel to mundane.
