Lyrics for Stairway To Heaven as interpreted by kevin

Stairway To Heaven Lyrics
There's a lady who's sure all that glitters is gold
And she's buying a stairway to heaven.
When she gets there she knows, if the stores are all closed
With a word she can get what she came for.
Ooh, ooh, and she's buying a stairway to heaven.

There's a sign on the wall but she wants to be sure
'Cause you know sometimes words have two meanings.
In a tree by the brook, there's a songbird who sings,
Sometimes all of our thoughts are misgiven.
Ooh, it makes me wonder,
Ooh, it makes me wonder.

There's a feeling I get when I look to the west,
And my spirit is crying for leaving.
In my thoughts I have seen rings of smoke through the trees,
And the voices of those who stand looking.
Ooh, it makes me wonder,
Ooh, it really makes me wonder.

And it's whispered that soon if we all call the tune
Then the piper will lead us to reason.
And a new day will dawn for those who stand long
And the forests will echo with laughter.

If there's a bustle in your hedgerow, don't be alarmed now,
It's just a spring clean for the May queen.
Yes, there are two paths you can go by, but in the long run
There's still time to change the road you're on.
And it makes me wonder.

Your head is humming and it won't go, in case you don't know,
The piper's calling you to join him,
Dear lady, can you hear the wind blow, and did you know
Your stairway lies on the whispering wind.

And as we wind on down the road
Our shadows taller than our soul.
There walks a lady we all know
Who shines white light and wants to show
How everything still turns to gold.
And if you listen very hard
The tune will come to you at last.
When all are one and one is all
To be a rock and not to roll.

And she's buying a stairway to heaven.

imo it's abotu a woman who takes heroin, think about it, it makes a stairway up your arm, as you inject it, it'll eventually send her to heaven.

Zep wrote this song with meaning in mind. Whoever say's they did not know what they were saying when they wrote it are not thinking straight. Furthermore, Courtney Love's opinion on lyrics? Come on. I think Stairway to Heaven is about a gold digging chick who is confused about her path. She want's to be loved for real but is torn between hard work and the easy road.

What I find funny is that Courtney Love was quoted in the 'Guinness book of Rockopedia' as saying:

"All their lyrics suck but the music is so great - it's like Beethoven Rock with really bad, elfin Dungeons and Dragons lyrics."

However . . . More meaningful words can be found when playing the song backwards . . . Some really creepy stuff . . .

I totally feel your pain rog . . . . The guitar work is brilliant though . . . And it contains a really moving solo towards the end . . . Roberts vocals are really powerful . . . I guess this makes up for the lack of sense within the lyrics . . . .

My prior comment not withstanding, it could also be a song about Oprah Winfrey.

I think it's funny that one of the most meaningless songs ever written has elicited the most comments on this Website. I used to love this song. I tried to figure out what it meant until I read an interview where Plant admits that its just a bunch of crap thrown together with no rhyme or reason. Okay, so it does rhyme, but that's about all you can say for it. Now that I know that its just a bunch of jibberish, I can no longer enjoy this song, which is too bad, because it has great instrumentals. They ought to come out with a purely instrumental version. That, I would listen to. Or maybe a Weird Al Yanchovic version.

"There's a lady who's sure all that glitters is gold
And she's buying a stairway to heaven.

Robert Plant is the lady. Just look at his glittery, girly stage costumes and hand mannerisms and tell me you don't see a drag queen. He is the may queen. Long hair was in then, but that hair is a lady's hair. It's like he's got some connection with the mother from "Carrie". It should be "Hairway to Heaven".

Okay, back to lyrics: Robert Plant was into drugs, and later lyrics showed he was into sex with male trannie prostitutes or "queens" (Royal Orleans, Sick Again). So it's partly a tale of early addiction, looking for happiness in drugs, meaningless sex, and material things.

The middle of the song is mystical, hobbitry mumbo jumbo and can be ignored entirely. Gandalf's smoke rings, laughing trees, the western elf land, etc. Means nothing. Just Robert getting lost in the fantasy hobbit world and not coming to grips with being a closeted gay guy surrounded by adoring heavy metal fag haters.

The end of the song is a dream for tomorrow when he'll be able to love who he wants and not try to find happiness on the side getting all bonged out and coked up with his tranny whores. Everyone will finally accept each other for who they are.

So, in the end it is a message of hope. Too bad he had to hit rock bottom before getting off drugs. And too bad he still hasn't come out. His wife stood by him through all his shit, though, so there must be a great deal of loyalty there. He could just do a lot for others though by finally saying the truth.

A classic, but not the best Led Zeppelin song, theres a bunch of ideas abot what it means, that its an anti commerical song, that its a demonic song played backwards(its not),that its about the choose in life, the truth is Led Zepelin had no meaning for the song, its up to each person to have there own meaning(obviously alot of people do;)

I Believe that this song is about a woman, that basically makes a LOT of money, but doesn't realize that even though she's living great and good, it will not get her into heaven. Simply.

i think that when he says about the rings of smoke through the tress and all that, maybe he's talking about weed. you know, in that era there was alot of weed obviously. and he might be saying his spirit is crying because life isnt really all that great, because of all the weird things happening in that era. let me know what you guys think.

the fact that people try to find a satanic message in this song when playing it backwards is pretty much fucking blasphemy and just overall insulting.

I guess that these comments frustrate a lot of people. They frustrate me. The meaning is there, for those who haven't got it yet. Just listen and live, and you'll get there eventually. Trust me.

The best sarcasm is that which most take at face value.

Listen to the singer comments. He actually does some comments about lyrics. Are you sure that there are no intented meaning in lyrics?

At least, and for sure interpetation is left in the 'hands' of audience. It depends on people who is listen to and his mood aswell.

It was Plant who hates this song. I saw him in an interview a while back. Page and Jones had this song and Page wanted Plant to come down and put some lyrics to it. He wasn't really into the song and around that time had been reading English mythology about druids and such. Anyway, pressured by Page he wrote the lyrics very quickly, and in his own words said the lyrics mean absolutely nothing. The first time they performed it live it bombed big time, they were booed by the audience and Plant turned to Page and said, "See, I told you". Who knew. I have somewhat blurry memories from the seventies of sitting around for hours discussing the meaning of the lyrics. Seems kind of silly now. Still ones of the greats, thou.
