Lyrics for Black Dog as interpreted by kevin

Black Dog Lyrics
Hey, hey, mama, said the way you move, gonna make you sweat, gonna make you groove.
Oh, oh, child, way you shake that thing, gonna make you burn, gonna make you sting.
Hey, hey, baby, when you walk that way, watch your honey drip, can't keep away.

*Ah yeah, ah yeah, ah, ah, ah. Ah yeah, ah yeah, ah, ah, ah.

I gotta roll, can't stand still, got a flame in my heart, can't get my fill.
Eyes that shine burning red, dreams of you all through my head.

Ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah.

Hey, baby, oh, baby, pretty baby, Tell me won't you you do me now.

Didn't take too long 'fore I found out, what people mean my down and out.
Spent my money, took my car, started telling her friends she wants to be a star.
I don't know but I been told, a big-legged woman ain't got no soul.

* Chorus

All I ask for when I pray, steady rollin' woman gonna come my way.
Need a woman gonna hold my hand, won't tell me no lies, make me a happy man.

I was kidding about the whole acceptance speech thing, not the statements afterwards. Because I see how that could be confusing.

This song is simply about somebody lusting after a hot lady. Read the lyrics out loud, and it proves my hypothesis that sexual harrassment with a good guitar track= a classic song lol.

Good song, but I must say that it might possibly be more overplayed than Stairway to Heaven... At least on the radio stations I listen to, they have these "Double shot" weekends where they play 2 songs from every artist back to back, well everytime they play Zep, black dog is almost always one of the 2 songs. and everytime the DJ says Zep is coming up next, you can bet it'll be black dog, and you hardly ever hear Stairway on the radio anymore. Though this is all from my experience, mind you, a tiny town in southern VT where for some reason rap is the most popular music (I don't understand why, it's about the most disgusting music i've ever heard"

Actually, I haven't heard "Stairway" on the radio too...

But, that's probably because it's 8 minutes long...

Though, whenever it IS played, the DJ always announces it, in my town, by saying "Get out your lighters, folks, here's the greatest song ever made", and then plays it.

Actually, in my town, "Whole Lotta Love" is played the most...

"Ah ah, child, the way you shake that thing
gonna make you burn, gonna make you sting".
It sounds like if he was speaking about a bear shaking a beehive. Infact, after he sings: "Watch your honey drip, can't keep away".
"I don't know, but I've been told
a big-legged woman ain't got no soul":
could this be another reference to a she-bear?
In Pullman novel "His dark materials" (loaded with Zeppelin references), bears have no daemons.
So they have no soul.
"She's gonna be a star": could be an allusion to the constellation of the Great Bear (Ursa Major)?

This song is about how he was in what he thought to be love with someone, but then he realizes that he doesn't love her anymore. It's kinda of a story in a song, a really short story. She obviously took his money and ran around. So he got tired of it.

I know this will sound pretty blasphemous, but I find this song lyrically disgusting. I have to give Zep credit for their music; they were true innovators. But "Black Dog", like so many other songs of theirs, is nothing more than shameless sex chant, about lust for some anonymous girl or another - in this case probably an overweight one. And regardless of the meaning, it is very overrated (and overplayed) tune. It wouldn't be such a terrible people situation if people actually acknowledged this song for what it is and stopped trying to find some deeper meaning in it.

In the spirit of finding common ground, though, it is a damn good riff.

In my opinion, I think they were probably stoned at the time and maybe jimmy page or robert plant saw a black dog when they were stoned, that's just my opinion.

It is about wanting to a have sex with a lady. I am pretty sure in the song the lyric goes "watch honey drip" not "Watch your honey drip" every guy knows what it means to have honey drip. That right there tells you what the song is about.

"mama" is a reference to Gaia the Pagan earth mother but a more sexual version of her because she wants to sweet and groove. I think the child is shaking pepper ause it's gonna burn and sting so keep away from tghe child. The honey drip is balm for the pepper, the soothing honey is the yin to the yang of the pepper child. The yeah yeah bit is meaningless Plant just likes the sound of it. he was might have been stoned at the time. I'll explain the rest of the song later ... let me know if you are interested.

If you think this song is hard to play on guitar, you should give bass a shot. The same riff, only on strings that are 4 times the size, can you say, "hand cramp". I'm not sure of the time signature exactly, but after the last note of the main riff, count 8 beats and then repeat, you'll be in the right spot every time. John Paul Jones is an insane bassist, I wouldn't be the bassist I am today without him, I'd still be playing AC/DC.
